Hi all - I bought a house 4 months ago, and found out a month ago I have banana plants! 8 to be exact, of which 2 have now produced the fruit pod (not sure what to properly call it). One popped out March 5th, the other one showed up April 1st.

From what i've found online it takes 60-80 days to grow enough to cut them off and let them ripen off the plant. Is that correct?

Second question is this: They are very small - about 5-6 inches long. I took photos to a local nursery and they confirmed bananas not plantains. But is that size normal?

Third question: How can I find out what type of banana plant this is? I'm new to growing bananas and very excited about it.

Thanks!
Roni

They all start out small, so give it time and let them begin ripening on the plant to be sure they are done if you can. Some take only a couple months and others, like Brazilian can be half a year to ripen. Be patient.
As for what kind, post a few pics here and maybe we can help. One of the whole plant, one of the whole bunch with the flower when it has been a few weeks since the last bananas were made, and a closer one on the flower. The whole bunch plus the flower is most crucial.

Also, welcome to the banana nut club. Maybe post in the member introductions page and tell us a little about yourself as well. Fill in your profile on your location as it helps if there's a problem.

Very few types are ready in 60-80 days. 4-6 months is much more common. Basically, don't cut anything off until at least 1 banana starts to turn yellow.

Thank you for the replies! I will continue watching my new bananas grown! I've tried 3 times now to upload photos but unfortunately it's not working for me. I'll try again later.

I try to always let them start to tun yellow on the plant before chopping the bunch. On the pics try resizing them smaller or cropping them. Usually that works for me.
