View Full Version : Why is this Website Down so Often?

This website was down for the last three days. How is that not news worthy? If it is bananas.org's web host's fault, I can suggest another host. I pay $4 per month for my web host's service and my web site is almost never down.

Blame the Russians.:ha::ha:
It's not down that often. Once a year... maybe twice... They probably have to do maintenance. For the price I pay to be here, I won't complain...

It is customary to preannounce being down for maintenance in consideration of forum members.

I am more curious what happened. As has already been stated, for what we pay to be here, we can't complain. I am overjoyed it's here for us to enjoy. Maybe a short thread explaining with an apology or something is in order, but I don't require it.

Only the advertisers have a right to complain. Do the advertisers read the site's news? Or, do their contracts stipulate that advertising costs will be prorated based on downtime? Just curious.

In that case, I would agree but I do not know what happened. I only assumed. Anyways, I'll gladly put up with it. This is still a very nice place for us.

Good question. ... I sent an email to the Domain owner/tech. I have not gotten a reply. The website & forum appears to be hosted from San Antonio, Tx and the registered owner is in Australia. ... Looking at the trace route now compared to a trace route 2 days ago, the forum server was off line or the virtual IP was shut down.

Don't know what happened but the server hosts multiple forums. I am also on AlbertaChickensEtc. forum and it went down at same time for almost as long. That sites moderator said the server said it was from overload.
Who knows, maybe hacked or "The Russians"

Since 2/22/17 after which this website has been down twice, for more than a day. I have been frequenting other web forums since 1998 and such frequency and length of downtimes is very rare.

I joined this site many years ago. I met the founder of the site, Mediahound, when I was down for a show I attended, The Tropical Plant Industry Exposition. I don't think Mediahound has any more to do with the site, (I think it's been sold), but I,too, wonder why it's down so much.

Yeah it occasionally shuts down - roll with it. There's plenty of weird and wonderful forums out there. I haven't noticed any adverts though - I wonder how they make their money?

It happens on rare occasions, but those are the times I finally get some long overdue stuff done. Apparently I am on here way too often....

You must be running an ad blocker. Pause it and you will see.

I still own the site, I never sold it. I just don't have time lately to come and hang out and post, read all the posts, etc., like in years past.
The site earns next to nothing from the few google ads that are peppered around here and there, and with the costs to run it and store all the data, bandwidth etc, its a loss, but that's OK, as I did not start this project with money in mind.
Actually I did not realize it was down and as soon as I did (thanks to an email I received from a post on the Bananas.org Facebook page! ;) ), I restarted the server.
I should setup some notifications to alert when the site goes down..
anyway, sorry about that, everyone!
And thank you for this site!!!

Jarred,
Sorry that I assumed that the site had been sold. It seemed that, some time ago, Bananas.org had become part of some larger entity, and there was an elaborate procedure to get on site. Guess I was wrong. Again, sorry.

MediaHound ,
Thanks for the site and all the enjoyment most of us get from being on here.
I do not understand the whining for something we do not pay for but use almost on a daily basis.
Are you still into Banana's?

It seems so easy to complain when you are not doing the work.
The site provides more entertainment then it disappoints.
Just say thanks to MediaHound for providing the site that the majority enjoy!!!

Sorry Jared. I haven't had much time lately, and I confused you with Garden Web. It was sold and it has become more difficult to get to the site.

That suggests that you own more than one website and bananas.org is not the homepage on your browser. Am I correct?
I ask because I have only one website so, of course, it is my homepage and I would know it was down as soon as I opened my browser, which would be within a day.

Why so many questions? That's none of our business. He's intitled to a private life and we must appreciate what is freely and generously provided to us.
Enjoy the site for what's it's meant for; bananas!

I wasn't speaking to you. Your implication that I don't appreciate this site is wrong. And, you don't dictate my values.

Then use private messaging if you do not want people to comment. Just sayin'...
Where did I say that you didn't enjoy this site?
That's the last of my comments about this matter.
If you need to say more to me, I invite you to do so by private messaging.

Why does it seem that it is the same people that complain?
I am on the site every day and it is rare to have it down.
It would be more appropriate to say thank you to MediHound than to complain about something that cost you 0 dollars. Like you said there are other sites out there, maybe you should frequent them and don't worry about this one and how it is run.

Obviously your values are low.

site down again from 7/5/2017 about 7:07 pm to 7/6/2017 about 4:59 pm. From the New Post link, this shows the last and first post for today (4:59 pm). Today I could ping the bananas.org server but could not get a webpage to open.
I was in the process of submitting a post when my browser indicated Bananas.org was taking too long to respond.

He described above that he got the email last time, in March, from the message feature on the bananas.org facebook page. That seems to work.
He said:
"Actually I did not realize it was down and as soon as I did (thanks to an email I received from a post on the Bananas.org Facebook page! ), I restarted the server.

This is a problem in the hosting machine where the site is located. Apparently low-quality hosting doesn't withstand a lot of user traffic, which is why the site loading speed is lost. I've been using the services of Mangomatter (https://mangomattermedia.com/web-hosting-india/)for a long time and on my sites and forums I haven't encountered such problems although all are loaded on one hosting machine. You need to be very painstaking about choosing a hosting service for your site, since its performance depends on it. If you see that your site isn't developing and is standing still, try changing your hosting and you'll see how user traffic on your site will increase.
