Hi all I am totally new to this site. My name is Joe and my wife and I are in the process of buying a house in east central Florida zone 9b. We will be living in Florida about 6 months a year. I am interested in learning to grow bananas and what varieties are hardy and would thrive here? Also which varieties tastes good too? I hope I am not asking for too much.

So what banana plants would you recommend for a rookie to grow that tastes good? Also what books would be good for me to read?

Any help would we appreciated and thanks.

Joe

There are lots of good varieties you can grow in Florida and you can never go wrong with Namwah or Mysore varieties.
Tall Namwah and most if not all Mysore varieties (Pisang Ceylon) will need propping when they fruit. Will you have to deal with a lot of wind? A friend in the Daytona area lost some of his tall varieties to wind damage. You may want to consider dwarf varieties like dwarf Brazilian or dwarf Namwah as starter plants.

Crazy Banana,

They would be in a patio area that has a 6' fence so I would hope it would not be too windy. I probably will start with the a dwarf variety.

Thank you,

Joe
