I finally nailed down a list of tc bananas to add to my collection. One of them is Vunamami from png which is a diploid hybrid between acuminata and schizocarpa. There are a few varieties of this genotype and I wondered if anyone else had experience growing them.

I had one that I planted. Lasted about 6 months and died. A friend had one too which she kept in the shade and in a pot. It lasted a bit over a year but also died. So for us, at least here in Hawaii it was tougher to keep alive than even a Fe'i.

Do you know which cultivar you had? I found ato, kokor and ungoto but they didnt have those. That is interesting about their quick demise as the lady at the research station was of the opinion that the fei and fei x common banana hybrids (abt, abbt), were the slowest and hardest to grow. So much so they only tc'd those for researchers I couldnt get any. Do you think think they might dislike too much heat? Being from the png highlands?

If anything, I think 'Vunamami' might have been too cold in Hawaii, as it is not from the highlands, but from East New Britain (Vunamami is a place name, given to the plant because it was from there, which is a common situation), lowland equatorial tropics, very hot and humid pretty much all the time. Other cultivars from this type of environment do fine in Hawaii, but with the S-genome perhaps they are less tolerant. They are relatively poorly studied plants. There is also always the potential of genotype x environment interactions which can be difficult to pin-point what exactly the issue is.

Cool, I might ask the lady how it grows in the qld collection in gladstone. I'm sure she said they were field growing it.

Have you ever come across any other seedless edible hybrids Gabe? I know helens hybrid is edible but has seeds. Actually, if you cut the male flowers of helens hybrid are the fruit seedless?

I have Vanumami, Kokor and Tagamoor which I will be making available in a few months as tissue culture plants with roots in-vitro.
