I picked up 12 banana corms from California earlier this month. Not much to look at yet but they are all starting to grow. I planted 6 in a new bed that is on the north side of a new little greenhouse. This is to shade it during the summer and receive heat from it during the winter. The other half are in pots in a greenhouse. I got all of the corms from quail gardens. I saw that they had just cleaned up their bananas, so I followed the trail of banana leafs to a trash area and find a huge pile of banana trimmings. I look around and see nothing but leafs, so I dig a little and start finding corms. Now I am excited and I go find the head Gardner. I am with my school on a 6 day horticulture trip; this helped in getting the donation of their trash. The only problem is that I have no Idea what kind I have.

The curators at Quail Gardens are setting up a display for the County Fair near our display. I will see them all next week and try to determine what varieties were culled.

I've had that same sort of variegation and leaf damage on several plants that cleared up as they matured and got healthier, but hey, you never know. I hope Richard can nail down what you have, that would be really nice of him!

Wow, what a great break for you! I don't know what kind of bananas you found. I bet you're thinking that the variegated one is an Aeae -wouldn't that be a find!!! Hope it is. I gotta find that dumpster too!
Best of luck with your adopted bananas. I will look you up to see your progress when I get out to Las Vegas. My dad lives in Scottsdale, so I will going to visit him sometime later this year. by then, your bananas will all be id'ed and growing like crazy.

Hope reigns eternal! Won't be long before you will find out for sure. Just keep it our of direct sunlight, especially in your area, just in case it is what you think it is. Great find! Congratulations!

Hi again!

I heard back about your find from Carol Graham, the curator of bananas at Quail Gardens. It turns out that it took several work crews several days to perform all the cleanup work on "Banana Boulevard" -- and so what you have is some unknown subset of their collection. Now there is two pieces of good news with this: 1st, you know what they don't grow and hence what yours are not; and 2nd, within 2-3 years all of yours will have fruited (some much sooner) and you will be able to nail down which plants you actually obtained.

Cheers,
Richard
