Hello all!

My wife and I just moved to our new place last year. As we're finally all moved in, the pets are settled (2 dogs & 1 indoor cat) we are looking more into the yard. I already made up a raised garden (the soil in Tampa is quite sandy) and now we are interested in growing some Bananas trees. The yard has citrus trees when we moved in, but we had to tear them out as they were diseased.

Hoping to learn from this site before we take the plunge, and learn and share as we go along!

Just a quick follow up. We are in the Tampa area, reading some threads I've seen some people in central Florida also, at least one from the space coast and if I remember correctly Pasco area...

I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for first timers. We are looking for fairly tall plants, as we plan to plant them outside of our lanai but we want to be able to see the dogs in the rear of the yard still. The planting location we had in mind are an eastern side of the house, but still in full sun (only shaded by the house around dusk.) We do not have automatic irrigation so I don't think over-watering in the summer is something we'll face, and we have good draining so they wouldn't be sitting in standing water either.

Thanks in advance!

There are many members in your area(Florida and local) that can help you out.

It depends on what kind of bananas you like. I have 11 different kinds now, but only one that has fruited so far, since I am kinda new at it also. Namwah are tall and can take cold, so maybe try them since most people like them best... I am not one of those. Brazilians are good for central Florida, and tasty but not very big bananas, plus they take about 6 months to ripen.
I would avoid Cavendish varieties in your location as they do not like cold and your chances of harvest are lower.
Be sure to mulch, fertilize and water every couple days... Also, post pics.
