View Full Version : Cold Front Coming (I'm quite scared, no lie)

So my worst nightmare has come upon me.

Next Friday, according to the weathermen, will go below the 40s (Fahrenheit) and into the lower 30s. Now, normally I wouldn't care, as I've only grown banana plants since last March, but now, in a turn of events that I never expected, two of my banana plants are flowering. I was expecting only one to flower, and I was prepared for that loss, but the second one, just like Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, has surprised me with a flower that was all like, "Yo, while you weren't looking I asexually reproduced!"

Now I'm just waiting...

These are Orinoco I'm pretty sure so they can take a bit of cold, so they probably will be fine maybe. (?)

Have any of you sexy banana-heads had experience with the cold? How'd it go?

My Orinoco, 1000 Finger, and Rajapuri in the past month endured 6 nights of of 30 deg temps (33 to 36) F. Last night was 54 deg, while 3 nights before were in the low 40's. These are doing fine and still growing new cigar leafs. ... My other bananas have turned brown with the continued 40 deg nights.

The coldest air should not plunge too far south and stay well to the north of LAT 30 N. It will be cold for a day or two but the duration of the cold spell will be short.

I'm growing dwarf orinoco and have seen a few mornings with brief dips into the mid 30's and mine is still fine, and still inching out new leaves. (albeit at a glacial speed). You'll be fine.
