Transplanting and adding additional soil
![]() ![]() I know with normal trees you should not add soil above the crowns of the trunk which could kill the tree. With Banana plants is there a problem with adding soil higher around the base of the plant? The reason I ask this is I have a plant that the roots are at the surface of the pot. (I know apparently did not transplant soon enough!) Can I add additional soil around P-Stem to cover the roots? And can it be several inches? Craig

Transplanting and adding additional soil
I am bringing one plant in to larger container and it will stay in. I am looking to see if I can put more soil around and above where it is on the "P" Stem.

Yes but don't get carried away. Roots on the surface are perfectly normal and don't need to be covered. You should be thrilled to have those roots.

Transplanting and adding additional soil
So putting more soil around the "P" Stem will not hurt it then?

I will do it when needed.
Sometimes the soil will wash out or the corm will raise in a container. Here is a photo of a plant with roots above the soil line. Go ahead and put a soilless mix in there to cover those roots. . ![]() Soil pulled away from the side of the container by Hostafarian, on Flickr |
