So after much thought, I have decided to take my field nursery out of the back yard. I have different objectives now after figuring out what works and what doesn't work in terms of bananas and plantains.
I have decided to change my business model and only grow plantains commercially, and to be specific, dwarf plantains. I have zero problem selling plantains and I sell every plantain that I grow in 1 hour every two weeks. The backyard will be planted in late-season Avocados. Which grow fairly well along the lake.
I plan to have my backyard cleared of bananas by March.
If there is something that you are after as far as specific variety, PM me

Nope I may plant some Toronjas and Mandarinas. UF has developed an interesting production technique that breaks even at year two.
The Naranja thing has to do with the place Naranja
How neat that you've been able to focus on what works for you. I'm a bit older and still don't have it figured out. Thankfully I probably have, genetically, another 22 years or more to figure out what I want to do when I grow up. Now that I'm finally getting plants out of pots (took me over 2 years to figure out where to put them), I'm up to adding more varieties to my "stable" but the Yankee in me hates asking prices; I've recently begun testing my wings with dickering here in FL but it's very alien to me. If it's not too much trouble, could you put prices on pups in your listing? And perhaps add a zip if peeps want to pick up? I won't be driving more than 100 miles RT until after the 1st of the year so you might run out before then. Hope so for your sake--not mine.
Wishing you great success in your newly directed course; I'm a big fan of plantains.

Same question as the other reply about cost (I'm scheduled to come South to Orlando for the Thanksgiving holiday, but I think Pahokee is a little far for me).
I've been keeping a low profile, but looking primarily for the only three varieties for which I hold any hope in Atlanta;
Viente cohol, and
Hua Moa
Dwarf Superplantain
Since I'd have to overwinter any new corms inside at this point, small corms would absolutely be ok (maybe preferable even)
Many thanks!

I would be interested in these as replacements for the plants I lost in July. But I have to drive about 450 mi oneway to pickup. PM is being sent.
1st choice: Dwarf Brazillian; Gros Michel; Pisang Ceylon; Dwarf Namwah; Raja Puri; Blue Java
2nd choice: FHIA-1; FHIA-18; Williams; Hua Moa

My house is in Pahokee, 33476. PM me for an address. If you want just a few suckers, I am charging $7/sucker. If you want like 20-30+, I am charging $3/sucker.
For shipping: $20 for 1 sucker, $30 for 2 suckers, and $15 more for each additional sucker. That price includes shipping.

I am sorta in the first stages of this also. I was wondering if I should grow more plantains. I have almost 50 varieties and first ones I decided to get rid of are tall namwah and tall red. I may keep one each just because but not for fruit production. I am very interested in your plans, models, and customers so I can replicate in my area.

This is a big bet. I live in an area with a large caribbean population, the kind of place where you go into the grocery store and see someone with 30 plantains in their cart. I have never really had trouble selling plantains. I can sell bananas, and I can sell Hua Moas but I really gotta hustle them. With plantains, I had people willing to come to the farm and cut everything that I had and pay me by the raceme. I gave up on Farmer's markets, the closest one to me just wasn't worth the time I was investing into it. Basically 8-10 hours per week and 70 miles roundtrip, my normal gross was only $200. I found other vendors at the market that wanted to sell my fruit and that's my primary mode of sale for the bananas now. I highly recommend it as it's tough to get enough of a margin on bananas to make a ton of money. Towards the end I was selling at $1.50/lb which was great because it means a stalk of Goldfingers was worth $60 when cut into clusters, but selling 200 or 300 lbs of bananas isn't easy unless you have a big market.

Check with the Thrifty market chains... I know they do buy from local growers and cater to Caribbean tastes. Here in Palm Bay we have a large Thrifty and several other stores very similar (Bravo, Downtown Produce), and a large Caribbean population. So many that even our local Walmart sells burros, reds,Manzanos and sometimes others.

I had furrows made to make it easier to set out plants. The system is basically a twin row where the plants are 5' apart in rows that are 5' apart. You then leave a 10' road between the double rows to drive down

This is the basic idea you lay the plants out in the furrow and then cover them. The furrows are about 12" deep.

Why did you choose that variety over others like the regular or super plantains?
Dwarf varieties are more tolerant of wind, and the super plantain, while it does make a good heavy bunch, the fruit isn't as well sized. So it left me with two options :try to get a large shipment of curare enano from Galiltec (Banana Plants | Plantain Plants | Galiltec S.A. (http://www.galiltec.com/bananas-plantains.html)) or get some Dwarf Puerto Rican Plantains from Agristarts and also macro propagate some myself. Galiltec never responded to my queries, and Agristarts was more than happy to sell me a few thousand plants.

It's actually just southeast of the 3 acre farm. Between the highway and the railroad instead of between the dike and the railroad.

There is an old windmill and well on the property that was obscured by Elephant Grass and Brazillian Pepper trees. We killed them and lit them on fire

Today was mostly about laying pipe for irrigation. Thankfully, the main line which is half a mile long was dug by machine. However the laterals which are 140' long need to be dug by hand. 140' by 18" doesn't sound like much until it's you back getting broke.

My business partner has quite a bit of experience growing plantains, and thankfully knows more about installing irrigation than I do. Normal practice in this area is to manage the water table for seepage irrigation. I should know more because I took a graduate level course in irrigation, but they didn't ever really get into the physics of system design.

That's 9.7 days continuous pumping. ... More realistic the windmill might furnish 1/2 of that for the week depending on the wind. ... It may still be worth fixing later to offset some of the power cost and as a backup. ... What water line pressure are you working for and is irrigation by drip lines or sprinkler?

that well looks like 3 inch well in the picture, might be 4 inch its hard to tell. to run both the windmill and the pump you would have to use 2 separate drop pipes. the gas pump would require at the very least an 1 1/4 drop pipe to get the volume, 1 inch would drop volume. the windmill would require 2 inch liner with the pump going inside also to get any kind of volume from it. a 6 inch well would be kind of tight to get all this down, because the drop system would have to have couplings or bell ends to get the length of drop pipe that is required to function properly. an 8 inch well would work nicely for this, but would require a special wellhead, but at the same time everything would be difficult to install and service with out a pump hoist. we wont talk about water levels or draw down.
now look at their soil. looks like in the pic that it has sell in it. very sandy. a windmill would just water the first couple of bananas and that's it. and it has to have wind which it does not blow much in the summer around here. less your right next to the big waters.
now you can run an above ground pump on the windmill but they are expensive. this way you could get away with using 1 drop pipe, but you would have to use check valves on both systems and the would make you loose volume on the gas pump and any extra fittings on the suction line might leak air and also cause the volume to drop on the gas pump.

The well with the gas powered pump is 6" and the pump itself is 3" I believe. The Windmill is connected to a 2" well. The soil is sandy. The guy that dug the new well said it's about 2' of sandy soil and 30' of muck underneath. The soil was actully pretty rich when I tested it. Anyways, permitted wells are expensive and I don't plan on doing it again.

lugged around many a gas pump in my day. 3 inch discharge and suction are rare. now you see that square muffler on the side of the gas pump? you could probably put that muffler inside of a 3 inch male adaptor, not the treaded end. they pretty much come out with 2 inch. the old brigs and stratons did 150 gpm. when Honda came out they had large cast steel pumps that took 2 people to pick up and the would only do 100 gpm. I own one with a plastic housing, but I have never timed it. 100 bucks near new, I use it to supply water on a cabin in the gulf and set pilings.
like the sweeps your using on your line. most people would not know and use regular 90s in there lines. I would take the pvc male adaptors off your pump and use 2 inch galvanized mipples going into your dresser couplings. the pvc ones are going to break especially the way that gas pump bounces around. kind of fun digging that pvc out of the threads.
if your 2 inch well is galvanized it is probably toast. most well drillers here in Florida quit using galvanized in the late 80s early 90s and went to pvc wells on anything smaller than 6 inch. basically because of cost but also because the tannic acid in the ground attacks the pipes at the threads and puts holes in the casing, makes em draw sand and stuff. AVERAGE life expectancy of a 2 inch galvanized well around here is 18 years. some last longer and some last a lot less. larger wells are sometimes made from pvc but anything with a submersible any more a being constructed of steel because the pumps can get hot and melt the pvc and destroy the well. steel is also used in areas that we have great difficulty installing a well.

Bet you were wanting to know what happened :) Me too! I am working on the other side of the country while my plantation gets battered by a hurricane. I brought my family with me. Still no power back home, and we just got potable water today. I haven't seen any pictures of my older plantings, but I am sure it's all layer down. Thankfully, I had someone put my 2000 potted plants for the nursery into the house, so they are fine. A friend sent me these pictures. If it's not too much trouble, could you put prices on pups in your listing? And perhaps add a zip if peeps want to pick up? I won't be driving more than 100 miles RT until after the 1st of the year so you might run out before then. Hope so for your sake--not mine.

it might be beneficial if you gave us your general location. many have plants to give away or modest prices. pm pukpukz. he is in Louisiana. he has many varieties, good prices. haven't heard from him since the last hurricane that hit Louisiana, but he is still selling on ebay. also sddarkman619 is selling right now, good prices and many good varieties.

Weeds everywhere. Parts of the field were actually flooded until the first week of November.

Diuron 80W has been a really good tool for clearing out the weeds.

would intentional cover crops like daikon radish clover vetch etc be feasable instead of herbicide

If I had my own mower and my own seeder perhaps. I have an ATV, a disk, and a sprayer. I make the most with what I have. Also, for 9 months of the year I am not consistently around to manage my farm. The go to cover for my area would probably be jack bean.

Nick, I know you got rid of the bananas in your yard, still crying over it, but do you still have the 3 acre patch down the road between the rr trax and levy? You had Williams and Hua Moa, etc. there

Yes, it's still there. I've been renovating. I replanted quite a bit. That's where my remaining diversity is. It's mostly being planted to plantains as well, but I have a nice section of the farm with some other varieties.
For bananas I have:
2- FHIA-1
12- FHIA-17
2-FHIA-18
1 Baloy
20 Williams
2 Dwarf Brazillian
2 Pisang Raja
2 Njalipoovan
10 Dwarf Nam Wah
1 Mysore
For plantains I have:
1 Common harton
3 African Rhino Horn
8 Dwarf Superl Plantains
Many Hua Moa
Many Dwarf Puerto Rican Plantains
Many Giant Plantains
I say many because I don't know how many.
