OK cool as I'm just NW of San Diego proper. I haven't tried to seriously grow bananas for a few years but my problem before was I trying to grow pure cavendish types and they just halted come winter. I'm looking forward to see how Namwah, Brazilians, and possibly Mysore types do for me.

In the prior decade, I grew and fruited Dwarf Cavendish several times in the ground in western Rancho Peñasquitos USDA zone 9b near Black Mountain middle school.

7 ft is not too bad for Pisang Ceylon, I'll have to think about it.
Richard, I did know that know that you fruited Dwarf Cavendish in the San Diego area. You must have had a good microclimate situation at your place. Both pitangdiego and crazybanana have mentioned that cavendish don't do as well for them in the San Diego area. I also consider them experts.
I, however, am not giving up on dwarf cavendish. This time I'm going to give it more sun and see how that goes.

Yes, up on the bluff the climate is ok but down in the canyons small thin crusts of ice can form in the winter.

That's the thing Richard! I'm in an apt. :( Thankfully I'm on the bottom floor and I can plant stuff in pots beyond my balcony but it limits my banana hobby :/ I'm thinking of renting a house next year but it would be in South Bay not here.
I am above the canyons so hopefully I won't get ice this winter.

So at best you can get 3/8 day sun which is insufficient for any cultivar that would otherwise tolerate the climate. By not divulging this information you've been deceitful with other members here. I request that you stop making queries on this page until you have a viable growing environment. As to what that is ... here is a guide:

All reputable databases report pstem height, not plant height.
I have read reports from TN Ag of Improved Mysore (Pisang Ceylon) fruiting at 14', and the latter by members at this site in very south Florida at 10'-11', and here in San Diego County CA (not San Diego TX) at 7'. Mine have been consistent at 7' for three years in the same mat.
This of course has very little to do with Zacarius who is complaining about bananas to grow here when in fact he does not have a viable growing environment.

Couple months ago I had a 3 foot shoot. We just harvested fruit and it had a 12 foot pseudo at harvest. I cut the 12 footer down and recycled it and the 3 foot pup is now 8 foot. No care at all since I planted it December of 2016 and it is planted in sand and compacted phosphate clay which is common in my neighborhood. I heard Klotek was near the same but Klotek is not even close and seems to be pupping at a smaller height.

It probably depends on the environment. I have just measured my two fruiting plants because of this discussion. Both have fruit bunches at 14' growing.
The Pisang Ceylon mat inland at my horse barn has two plants between 9' and 11' and still no inflorescence :(

Here's some characteristics of the banana I'm growing labeled "Pisang Ceylon":
I'm growing it in zone 10b San Diego county California, where our highest humidity is when it's cool and our lowest humidity (sometimes < 10%) is when it's hot.
It fruits at a pstem height of 7 feet.
The time of harvest is typically mid-summer. At that time I'll also have a single 3' to 4' pup (due to thinning) which will be next year's crop.
The plant appears to be as "cool tolerant" as Namwa.
The average fruit is about 4 inches long and 1 inch at the largest diameter.
The flesh has an orangish hue. It is sweet, but also has slight sub-acid flavor with something like nectarine overtones.
Here's two pictures, one of the stalk with fruit bud and the other during flowering and fruiting.

There's 2 levels of cement-filled 6"W x 8"H x 16" long cinder blocks around the banana bed planters -- one below ground level and the other above. So those polls are implanted 16" in cement.

Richard, is the 4' GM a pup or a new planting? If a pup, did its momma ripen her fruit? The daughter-in-law I planted my GMs for has begun her year in Kabul and if these guys don't ripen in the 6 weeks before my son leaves, it will be up to the young 'uns to produce for her. Yow, the first two Gros Michel cracked and ripened today so I know I have to start harvesting. Someone mentioned harvesting from the top down. How exactly do I do that?
Yeah, it would be easier just to hack down the whole bunch but my younger son comes to visit in 10 days and I would really like to have some still edible on his arrival. Alas, I am guessing there is no chance there will still be green ones at the end of July when he leaves for Kabul for a year The plan had been for him to hand carry some to his wife who is already there and has been waiting to taste these guys for YEARS. Maybe plant #2 will come through but the fruit on it is still pretty runty.

Okay, Richard, following your instructions, I just made the smallest cut in the pseudostem and the plant gracefully fell over (fortunately my husband was there to catch it). Makes me realize how important that PCV structure was in keeping everything reasonably vertical for so long.
Anyhow, we now have 35 pounds of still greenish bananas and I was considering hanging them in the garage to ripen as you suggested, but the structural integrity of our garage is such that exterminators for the past 30 years have been warning us not to sneeze too close to it. I am afraid the bananas would pull the whole thing down. Is there any reason I couldn't just hang the bunch from a branch of the very sturdy and very obnoxious ficus that overhang the driveway? They would still be mostly in shade. And since the garage really lacks a roof, they would not be any more vulnerable to critters outside than in. Or I could just hang them from the exposed beams in our bedroom...

You must be North San Diego County! I know a slew of folks from the San Diego chapter but not so much from your neck of the woods, even though my younger son's godparents lived in Solano Beach for a love while. Hey, I hope you have been admiring the crfg.org site which I built (knowing virtually nothing about such things)

For some bizarre reason they began ripening erratically throughout the bunch this week, so I removed the supports today and let the whole thing slowly lower itself into my arms. Some of the ripe ones on the bottom inevitably got a little squished but given that the bunch formed mid January it seemed a normal 9-month gestation. One of the pups is already 15' high and I expect great things from it.

Even though you got your plant from my mat, your inflorescence looks different than mine. I currently have two fruit bunches of those as well. It sure is a weird mutant and finally has to go. I am grateful to say that it will be an easy task since I have the real deal now thanks to our generous member Hector.

I don't think a video is needed. When you harvest a bunch from a pstem, then you cut the stalk to its base. Afterwards you bring a spade shovel (that has a "lip" for your foot) along with a sledge hammer. Push the shovel down all the way to soil level all the way around the spent corm -- using the sledge hammer when necessary to get penetration. I take this same approach to removing pups. After a few cycles you'll be an expert.

Thanks for the reply. I usually pull pups that same way or with my pry bar. But when harvested past bunches just cut the old plant down to ground and let it just rot away. Never thought of cutting out those pieces of corm under it.

It is just leaf damage, because these are only early morning hours temperatures (about 2 hrs every morning for the last week). Temperature right now outside is 67F.
Got to see the positive part of it: bad for my banana plants and other tropicals, but desirable for all my stone fruits like apricots and peaches.
