Hi all,
I just purchased our first banana tree for my wife's upcoming birthday and I honestly couldn't be more excited. We planted a Brown Turkey fig tree 3 years ago and my one of my favorite past times is watching it grow and fruit. We live in Portland OR, so I'm crossing my fingers that we'll be able to get it to fruit. Any suggestions would be highly welcomed. Still need to figure out if we need to pull it indoors or if it will do well planted outdoors in the right soil.
Anyway, I certainly appreciate this forum and all of the knowledgeable posters!

Welcome to the ORG.
I'm not sure what kind of fruiting bananas you can grow up in Portland. I'm no expert, but I think the rain/lack of heat may cause issues. I know basoo will do fine for you, but they are not edible.
Best of luck!

Thanks all! Very kind reception.
I failed to mention that we purchased 2 blue java / ice cream trees from Green Earth. I believe they should be fine in my area but any affirmations would be super appreciated.
Thanks!

Be prepared. If you ordered Ice Cream bananas from Green Earth publishing, they will be strong and healthy Namwah plants. (They will not be Blue Java) Many say they prefer Namwah anyway, but I am not one of them. I don't really care for Namwah. I have not yet tasted a Blue Java, though. Namwah are stout and fast growing bananas, though.

Hmm that would be a bummer. Ted has seemed like a very straight forward guy so far. Is there any way for me to determine Blue Java vs Namwah?
