Hi everyone,
I recently obtained an open permit to bring in tc bananas into my state for the next 12 months, no mean feat here. I have lady finger, sucrier, goldfinger, bluggoe, dwarf red dacca, dwarf ducasse, monkey finger, pacific plantain, blue java, pisang ceylan, dwarf french plantain and lakatan and what is possibly a reverted back to green dacca. I have ordered kru, but I was looking through resesrch papers to see what the lab has and I noted a couple of varieties had unusual genetics, namely AAT and ABBT, I am not sure what the T is? Is it textilis? I cant get cocos or highgate, but is there any varieties I should chase? Im limited to what the lab has (sadly no iholena).

so what are you going to after the 12 months are up? 999.5 species to go? don't mind my stupidity but what is a tc banana? sounds like you are a man with a mission. keep it up.

Actually Im limited to what is in Australia already. The process for importing them firm overseas is cost prohibitive. I managed to get a permit to bring unlimited numbers oe types within reason in to western Australia for 12 months. Id like to get as big a collection as I can.

Tc bananas are tissue culture. Its the only legal way to bring them in. Fines are large.

Hard to say without knowing what the lab has available as TC plants. Can you post their list?

They dont give their list out. They work on a request system only. Pita really, but theyre government funded and really only there to supply industry and research facilities. They dont generally supply retail nurseries or home growers. The lady is being quite helpful, she has agreed to supply me anything i ask for (in reason) if they have it. But apparently no one gets a list. Its procedure apparently. Ive been on promusa and a few other germplasm sites and found about 60-80 of their varieties. Thats how I came across the odd ones. Ive requested them and a couple of others.

That makes it challenging for you, not knowing what they have!
Since I don't see any of the FHIA varieties other than 01 (Goldfinger), I'd suggest FHIA-02, 03, 18, and SH-3640. Each of those has a lot of fans (and in some cases detractors), but you ought to try them, if you can. I think they've all been trailed in Australia, so I'd guess the lab would have them.

And Dwarf Brazilian if you want a shorter plant that produces fruit pretty much identical to Lady Finger.

Good point. I might request them and see what happens. They have some.

This catalogue should help you.

Great list. Keep us posted on what you get and how they work out for you.
My vague recollection is that Yawa is another "Namwah" (Pisang Awak subgroup), but I might be remembering that wrong.

Its actually yawa2 its got odd genetics as well being abbt. I have a chunk of dessert bananas but only one plantain. Pacific plantain. So I've added a few more cooking or dual use bananas as id like to find a few that grow and fruit well here.
