I bought an Icecream banana from a very reputable dealer.
Unfortunately it just started blooming here in Texas so likelihood of getting ripe fruit is pretty much zero.

How long before I can see if the fruit will turn "blue" and confirm whether I have the true Ice cReam variant?
Right now it just showed the blood for the first two hands and as far as I can see they look pretty green. not a hit of blue yet but maybe it take some time or?

Please post a photo, the blue is not apparent at first but quickly develops well before the fruit is mature, but a photo now and along its progress will help to secure a proper ID.

Will pictures of the bloom make a positive ID?

Tried multiple times to upload a picture but even though it says successful the I look there is no picture. AN idea what is going on? It is 2M so substantially less than maximum size.

Try making it even smaller.

Ok, that worked. Thanks, 1.3M seems to do it.

Update with new photo as of Oct 22. Still don't think it looks very bluish so is this just another Namwah?

I have read on here they aren't blue right away, so be patient because Namwah have pink midribs and petioles and your plant does not look like it does. (That and several reputable members here swear they have the real deal at Going Bananas.)
Do your leaves have a silvery underside?

Toss up. They should have a bluish color pretty early on - but that may be somewhat climate dependent - don't know.

On the bright side, they are definitely not Misi Luki which is almost always what the mislabeled ones turn out to be.

E-mail me and I can send you a couple pix during flowering.

Thanks for posting this question. I just purchased an "Ice Cream/Blue Java" from the Master Gardener plant sale in San Diego and I'm hoping it's the real thing. Looks like it'll have to flower out to know for sure.:ha:

I will be at Going Bananas on January 2nd, 2017 and I am going to ask what he has done to verify that his is a true Ice Cream. He must have sourced it from a known plant. I'll see what he can tell me. I will buy one if he can assure and guarantee it till it blooms and proves it self.

Darkman.... Don at "Going Bananas" told me the whole story about Namwah/Blue Java/Agristarts etc. He will give you the "low down" when you get there. Wish I could bring all ya'll some from here we have a ton of em.

Would you be open to ship a pup, now or in the spring?

hydroid

I wish I could bring or ship you one but I work in the Marshall Islands and the plants can't leave. They are very strict out here.

I see. Oh well...

I see. Oh well...

We're you asking me that and which pup are you referring to?

Are you asking about pups from Going Bananas? Isn't that where you got yours?

I'm confused! I do not have a Ice Cream or Blue Java. In 2012 I received one but that tuned out to be a Tall Namwah. I'm sure you were not asking about that.

Please clear the air and restate your question.

Thanks,

Well, share the story... you can't just drop some nit of info like that and not share...

@nph

Hydroid is an operator currently living in the south Pacific working for the man. He cannot share his bounty of bananas that he has there.

Yeah, I saw that, he responded and said he was in the Marshal islands. Sounds really nice...!

From the pictures I've seen it is definitely sensory overload there with the weather, beautiful seas and very little soil! He had to resort to composting to get enough soil to grow his bananas. That's pretty dedicated. His place in the state's is really beautiful too.

It's mostly just composting out here in the Marshall islands, like Darkman say's there's no soil just sand and the rain just sifts straight thru. I don't know how the island stays as green as it does but is fairly green during the rainy season. The Ice Cream is known by the locals as a "Cooking Banana". But we also have what the locals call "300" which is Mysore. The Mysore are few and not so plentiful plus they are hard to grow out here. I have a mat with 3 and should get a bloom any day now. The mysore is the top preferred banana by the locals (me too).

sputnic7.....Don at "Going Bananas" told me the story about Agristarts/ice cream/blue java/namwah but I can keep it all straight (comes with age) but if you get an Ice Cream from him it should be the real deal or if you call and ask him I'm sure he will tell you since he is on the same page about the situation.

NPH the thread starter got his at GB and it seems it might not be IC. I'll still make inquires when I'm down there.

It just seems like it is something akin to unicorns!

I may be able to get one from another knowledgeable source that is trusted.
