I just finished taking these pictures of most of my bananas that are out in the ground. I still have a few that are potted up and were not included. I wanted to start a thread so show the growth rates of my nanners over the course of the summer. There are several of these "babies" that are from you folks and for that I REALLY appreciate it.
Some of the bananas do not look that impressive right now, but before long, they should all take off... Hope you enjoy!!!!

What was left in the ground overwinter? Do ytour Illustrus come back everyyear?

Looking good Randy. My stuff has really taken off recently also. Oh, and by the way, how 'bout them Tigers (SEC tourney champs).

Randy,

My Illustris did indeed come back and with a vengence. They spread pretty well, but are easily removed. I have already dug quite a few for friend of mine that just put in a new bed at his new house. As far as what was left overwinter in the ground, was, basjoo, Saba, ornata pink, velutina, lasiocarpus, and I guess that is it. Most of the rest were sent to me by alot of GREAT members over the past summer and overwintered either in my unheated garage, or in my den. I will be testing some of them this winter, as long as I get a pup off it to keep warm...
Hope this answers your question, if not, feel free to pm or email me and I will tell you what little I do know, which shouldn't take me too long...LOL

I figured you were popping right and left. BTW, the rostrata is sending out a pup, the Pedro is shooting out a new leaf, but the Scheff is still just sitting there. I do have it in the ground and the others in pots, so the soil is probably a bit warmer in the pots...
BTW, thanks for the compliments...
Looks like the Tigers are ruling ALMOST everything!!!!

Glad to hear about the heliconia. If the Scheideana doens't grow, I've got plenty more. A pseudostem in my second mat of California Gold has flowered. The first one choked and I had to cut it down. I swear, I walked out one day I saw a big leaf, and then two days later and a bloom hanging down. Remarkable.

Hey Ben,

Thanks, Nate... I wish I could spread my beds out even further, but gotta leave room in the back for the kids to play ball and stuff. I totally understand what you mean by dragging the hoses all over, but I am hoping I have that one covered as well. I have about 3 hoses set up that it is just a matter of turning a couple of valves and I don't have to drag more than 50 feet of hose at anytime. Working out great so far and it sure is alot easier than last summer!!! Take care and keep in touch...

BTW, how do you grow that E. Maurelii in a pot so well.
In 2 years I have killed off 3 so far and am trying to get the last 3 to survive.

Wish I could tell you, but if I did, I would have to, well you know!!! jk
Anyway, I got it last spring in a 5 gallon container and it did real well. When temps started to drop last fall, I took it around the house and stored it by a tall, narrow window in my unheated garage, along side my queen palm. I lost a couple of leaves through the winter, but not many. I did not monitor the temps in my garage over the winter too closely, but I know it went to the upper 30s on a couple of occasions. I did not water it at all until this spring and only maybe twice until I brought it out this spring. I have fertilized it and since the temps are finally getting up, I have started back watering it about every third day for now. When temps stay constant in the 90s, I will probably water a little more often. Really, I do not know why it has done so well for me, but I am glad it has.
BTW, thanks for the compliment on the slideshow. Not much on the 'puter stuff, but saw it and thought I would give it a try....

If it helps I stored two of mine I had in the ground, in my crawl space over the winter and they are looking great now.

Hey Randy, you have a beautiful garden and a wonderful collection of bananas. Nice to see so many unique types that are all starting off. Looks like you caught the banana bug really good this year :) Great slideshow, thanks for taking the time to make it and post to share it with us!

it was great to see it, I watched it 3 times:2223: :D
is your basjoo already now THAT big ?
and your velutina is also already quite large!
good to hear that you overwintered the Saba in the ground, when I'll move next year to another house, I will also try saba (when i have space for it)
here they are slower, but they are in pot for only 2 weeks, the last days they started to grow :D
thanks for showing the pictures!

Wow Randy, I find myself in envy of your yard and all of those fantastic bananas! It just makes my banana fever go through the roof. If you or anyone else has some pups cheap, I would love to get more of a start. Most of mine were started from seed and I have such a long way to go. I did get a few small live trees, but since I am moving to Las Vegas in a month, don't want to begin my collection until I get there. Trying to figure out how to get the ones I have to Las Vegas intact.
Then I can perhaps post a similar slide show....? Great job!!!

I have one banana (unknown variety) with fruit getting ready to harvest soon! That will be the earliest ever for me!

Thanks, Kylie... Good to see you around again... Was wondering what happened to you... The hibiscus you sent me is out and growing real well. Kept it in a pot overwinter in my garage and I think it was one of the first to break dormancy as weather warmed. Looking forward to see what it will look like out in the yard when it blooms. I plan on posting my "other plants" pics in the other forum in a couple of weeks when everything grows a little more. Be watching and yours will be in there...
Again, glad to see you back on the board...

Wow Randy, what a difference one zone can make! Your zone 7 is much more 'nana friendly than zone 6. I also have a Maurelli and it survived in the basement with hardly any care last winter. It got very little light and water and continued to grow. I also have a four foot Raja Puri that did very well under those conditions.

Well, I don't know about you guys, but when you see your plants everyday, you don't realize how much they grow and how fast. I went out with my youngest daughter this evening and took some updated pics of my bananas. Here is just a tast of what a month of growth looks like with plenty of heat and water...

Chris,
I remember seeing the first two pics a while back. The last is nice. Looks like it has recovered and started growing for you. Mine are only about two feet tall right now, but after looking at pics of them last year, August and September is when they really started putting on the growth. Guess they need alot of extra heat!
Your place is looking like a mini plantation!!! Keep us posted throughout the rest of the growing season to its progress.
