Thanks a lot Cassie. We can not have everything. I envy you because you can grow bananas there and some pineapples or papayas. Here I have to struggle to grow them.
BTW I thought your Pisang Klotek might not make it last winter but look at it now! It is growing really nice where it is at.

When you graft all those different fruits onto one tree, do you need to wait a year or so to allow those areas to fruit or do you just let it go?

Pauly:
This is the first year they fruited. I graft them 2 years ago, the first year, they did not fruit but grew branches you can not believe. This Spring, they have a lot of flowers and this is what happened. I have many many varieties of European plums that I grafted on the canopy of a matured Santa Rosa plum. They took over the canopy. I had to use a ladder to graft them. I just let them be. I just cut other branches that interfere with the ones that were being crossed- branched.

I did not see your post before I answered Pauly but I think I answered both of your questions.
And thanks to both of you for your interest. You make my day to be pleasant.

here's my answer:

I don't prop the branches except those ones closer to the ground such as my Prince Ranier cherry and my green gage plum.
I learned my lesson last year when a big portion of my prince ranier give way because of the heavy fruit and almost half of my fuji apple tree broke for the same reason. But I got to harvest the fruit just the same. I just let them dangle until the fruit ripened. Then I cut the branch off.

Deb:
I did not think I answered you correctly but here's my answer.
Yes, normally I just let go of my grafts and leave them alone. But I make sure that no branches will be dominant from the mother plant near the graft. I cut them and make sure that the grafts get some sunlight.
But if the grafts flowered and there are no leaves sprouted to take care of the flowers for nutrients I cut the flowers like what happened to my granny apples. I've cut the fruits on my grannys thinking that it takes a lot of nutrients to sustain the fruit.
As Richard said to retain the fruit it would take away 4 feet of growth from the plant (I think that's what he said).

not to change the subject but Orchids are one of my favorite topics most orchids are easy to grow they have hybridized them so much that they have taking allot of the guess work out of it and contrary to popular belief they are vary tough plants they are one of the oldest species of plants on earth as a mater of fact you don't get that big a genius with out it not being adaptable they grow in every region of the world including Antarctica here In Nevada we have 14 different Native Orchids 2 of them grow without chlorophyll now get that for weird and unusual plants you cant get any more exotic!

Thank you so much Anna for your compliments.
Pauly: Orchids is some thing that I shy away from growing because I thought it takes special treatment to care for them like controlled humidity, controlled temperature, sunshine, watering, all controlled. Even fertilizing.
I've tried growing them before because I can buy a blooming orchid for $6 or $7 at the flea market and it is good only until the flowers bloom and die.
But my wife is very patient and she can grow them in our kitchen not a good looking lot but she can make them bloom again in small scale.

And here's a granny apple that I grafted early this years ' Spring and 3 months later it produce none but flowers and no leaves unlike that pink I don't remember the name I grafted at the same time but all leaves.
Better than my judgement I cut the flowers when it turned to small fruit because I am not sure if it will sustain the nutrients the fruits demand of her.

benny go to your fav grocery store and pick up a couple boxes of sure jell. get the one in the pink box. the instructions are what i use to do my jams. but i dont do the water bath process. put your flat lids in a pan of water and put them on med-lo to med heat. this allows the sealing process after the jar is filed.....after you ladel your mixture into the jars, make sure the mouth and the threads of the jars are clean( wipe them off with a hot wet clean dish towel.) take a flat lid and put one on each of the jars you have filled(you have to do this quickly) and seal it with the screw on lid. put a towel on the counter and place your jars on it upside down( the lid part will be on the bottom) cover your jars with the remaining part of the towel...and wait. when you hear the popping noise your jars are sealed, wipe the jars off( i get jam all over the ouside of the jars) and keep them in a dry dark place after they cool. most jams and jellies will last up to a year. if you press on the middle of the flat lid and it didnt seal then i would use the waterbath method. sorry it took so long to post this.

bencelest

Dean:
They are grafting tape that you can buy through the internet for about $2.00 a roll. I choose that because it is biodegradable. Once the graft takes about 3 to 5 weeks it disintegrates itself.
But you can use any tape you want even electrical tape but I believe the take will decrease.

I am all doing it for fun. Just trial and error method. I found out that Chandler pomello is the most compatible variety to graft with mandarins. Boosting production is a different matter.
I noticed though that the clemenules flowered early. It flowered on the next year's graft but they all aborted once the fruit were the size of BB's. Hopefully next year some will grow to maturity. But I enjoyed the flower's fragrance.

I have about 3 clemenule fruits that I think it will grow to maturity the way they look.
Somehow there is no telling that the clemenules are flowering constantly. Not many but 3 or 4 flowers at a time so you can see the different sizes of fruit on the tree.

Benny, My best friend in Jersey just came back from the Philippines within the last few days. Such a small world, you guys may have been on the same flight at some point.
Everything looks great over there! I have been inspired to do some grafting too. I have a Moro orange and a lot of Citrange It's just a matter of the doing. My Moro is putting on some flower buds though and I really want to try the fruit so I may wait a while.

Pete:
If you just give yourself a try and graft pome , pear plum or peach or apple first. They are the easiest ones to graft. Almost guaranteed that they will take. Once you get the hang of it, you can try citrus, persimmons and other hard to graft plants. Go to the internet and it will show you by diagram how to do it.
When you see a new buds coming out of your stick that you inserted into another plant what a great feeling you will have. And to think that it will bear flowers and fruit in the same year or spring you graft it, that's another wonderful feeling. It took me 4 years before I have the courage to do it but I did not know it is so easy like brushing your teeth.
I can graft a scionwood in less than 1 minute.

And thanks Frogg for your compliment.

a fruit stand alongside the highway.
Let me correct myself when I said 'highway'-
you can not interpret it as such like superhighway we have here in US.
The highway I am talking about is such that a 2-way road in the suburbs here in the US. There are many eating place, restaurants, food store, rice fields, fish ponds, trees, etc..... jotted along the 'highways'.
here's an example of such a 'restaurant':

Imagine I only got that from you last year and without roots or leaves.
At least I think they are flowers.

I'll do it asap.
Also where can I buy pyrithin? What store carries them locally?

Richard
03-01-2009, 02:07 AM
Yea! The babaco will now put out about 1-2 flowers per week until the late fall, then slow down for the winter.

Pyrethrins are group of chemicals. The commercial product I like is Bayer Powerforce with the single active ingredient, Cyfluthrin. It is concentrated, only 1 ounce per gallon. Independent nurseries carry it, but you won't always find it in a big box store.

Plants That Produce (me). Let me know and we'll arrange a meet-up.

And where is San Diego State located?

From Imperial Beach, you would travel north on the 15 Freeway and then east on the 8 Freeway and exit at College Boulevard. Bring lots (dozens) of $ bills for the parking meters.

If you are going to SD State, you might as well go one more exit east and eat at the world-famous DZ Akins restaurant. The food is inexpensive and don't order more than a half sandwich unless you are hungry.

I just read through this entire thread and I'm loving all the great pictures! You are quite the mad scientist when it comes to all your grafting! That's pretty incredible. I find it kinda hilarious that all your trees have tags on them so you know what each branch is. Totally understandable though with that much to keep straight! Keep up the good work.

Oh, one more small note...as a moderator on another forum, the threads are easier to navigate if people do not multiple post. Try to put all your pictures for each group in a single post to reduce confusion. You can always use the 'edit' button to add to it if you forget something. Just a thought.

Keep up the great work! I'm loving your grafting skillz!

I also have clementine mandarin, seedless kishu, Meyer lemon, gold nugget, and oro blanco grafted to it.

I am still pushing forward with my citrus hobby here in Minnesota, its coming along slow but sure and there, in my estimation, is nothing more rewarding or tasty than a piece of fruit that one has grown, or a veggie too for that matter. I was able to harvest some limes last year and they were just the best, now I can't wait for my first banana's :woohoonaner:

And to hear your friends say how sweet tasting your harvest is more than compensate your hard work.
I've been harvesting the fruit of my labor now for many years. I just let them and neglect them now that they are matured. But I am still vigilant looking for aphids and snails who are my two arc-enemies of my garden.
I know what you mean harvesting your first banana Joan. I waited I think 3 years for that.
and the only one- California Gold at best. I don't have any luck with the others. They would flower but the fruit is not good enough to keep. Maybe because of our weather here. Not enough heat in the summer and cold in the winter. But I am still trying.

and here's my Washington navel that every time I visit my backyard I munch some of them. They are very sweet.

But here's my satsuma mandarin that I transferred last year. It used to give nice size fruit, this year it's not so I cut all of them and hopefully next year it will give normal size fruit.

and here's a calamondin tree that Joe Real gave me a few years back.

and lastly here's my garden companion most of the time.

When I uncovered the plastics off of my bananas I discovered that there are 2 bananas that had flowered during the winter. The ice cream and the Raja puri. This is without any leaves leaves turned brown during the winter. So what I got are p-stems with flowers without any leaves. I might still save them though.

OK Ante. Here they are.

This is the Raja Puri I am talking about. Check how tall it is.

<a href=http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=29919><img src=http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=29919&size=1 border=0></a>

and this is the ice cream. This is quite tall 5 times higher than the RJ.

<a href=http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=29920><img src=http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=29920&size=1 border=0></a>

all of my decidious trees are starting to bloom. This one is a santa rosa plum with at least 10 different cultivars grafted to it.

and this is my addition that finally the city fathers finally approved the plan. But I have to do many revising to my original plan. I am still working on it. Patty, are you there?
And Ante, remember you told me to fire the electrician who did the electrical? After I did the revising and did the electrical wirings according to the code, the inspector could not find a single mistake and he signed the permit in no time. But I forgot to take pictures on the electrical though. The next inspection should be the final.

Thanks Patty. After for so many years.......
I finally got it done.
Had I known that it would be that easy.........
It could have been finished over 10 years ago.
Now I know how the city fathers behave and act and also I learned how to do the sketch the city fathers would approve. I thought they were there to bust you up. Before I was afraid the expense of hiring an architech or designer and also the costs of the permit. Now I know how to do it the easy way that would not bust your pocket. I listened to hearsays before.
