View Full Version : Getting started, overwinter indoors?

I am just getting started growing bananas and have a couple of small banana plants (18 inches tall or so). I live in Louisiana just north of the 9a / 8b line, and given what I have read it sounds like it would be smart to overwinter these small bananas indoors before putting them in the ground in the spring. I plan to let them overwinter in a mostly unheated sunroom, during the winter months the highs in this room often get into the high 70's, and lows never get below freezing (a heater is ran in there for the various plants when there is a severe freeze).
Now for the questions, what size container do I need for each banana plant, assuming they will be going into the ground after the last freeze, likely around april 1?
And do you think these are acceptable overwintering conditions for a small banana plant?

Put them in at least a one gallon pot filled with well drained soil n your room as you described it and they will do fine. Be careful to not overwater.

There are some great Youtube tutorials which describe how to overwinter your banana plants which might be of help.

I was looking for the same thing....I am trying mine in garage tornado shelter...also a section in the corner of my garage for the dormant plants. Found similar item for 15buks with humidity sensor at a big box store. Another brand..yet identical at another box store for 20. Im in Oklahoma...but getting a game plan myself as this will be my first time keeping my larger plants bare root. At least i have a few pups to keep inside..but would really love to start spring off with last years plants. Will be a learning experience for sure..but have to start somewhere to see what works with what I have.

On a related topic, is there any type of soil preperation I should be doing on the area of the yard I plan to pant these in the spring? Most of the soil in the yard is moderately well drained sandy loam with underlying mottled clay. Top soil ranges from about 6 - 18 inches thick depending of part of the yard. (you never know exactly until you dig, move over 10 feet and it may be very different)

p.s. I have access to utility tractor, manure, etc
