Hello all! I just finished listening to the Banana book by Dan Koeppel. And I'm hooked. Gotta learn.

Now I want to see if I can get my hands on a Gros Michele tree and grow it, maybe even get it to bear a little fruit.
I'm in Ohio, Zone 5, so I know it would have to be in a pot and taken in before the frost. If anyone's got some suggestions, I'd love to hear them about how to do this.

Thanks. Looking forward to learning.:08:

Welcome. Not saying it can't be done but gros michele was very cold sensitive for me. It would be a harder one to fruit for you. Out of all mine overwintered in my greenhouse I lost only the gros Michele. In zone 8b I have cut back on and just about done away with cavendish varieties. They do not like it here.

Research some cold Hardy ones like dwarf Orinocos, Dwarf Namwa, etc.

Also research short cycle ones like Veinte cohol, patupi, Tigua, Monthan.

Also short dwarf varieties may be easier to bring inside and outside each season. Like raja Puri, dwarf Orinoco.

Lots of info on this site. Have fun.

Best thing I can tell you is to read. There's a ton of info here.
Sand is your friend. Mix in a lot of coarse sand in your soil as it drains well and helps to not overwater your plant. See my previous posts for recipe. Have fun growing!
