Hi All,

I'm a, " newbie, to raising the, "Musa basjoo," Banana Tree, and could use any helpful tips I can get.

I'm from a small town east of Columbus, Ohio, called "Mt. Vernon;" also, I live in Planting Zone 5. I'm 76 yrs. old and retired from Teaching and Coaching after 40 years of service on the High School level. I taught Biology and Life Science for 5 years and 35 years teaching, 'Special Education," on a HS level. My MS Degree was, "Teaching of the Severe Behavior Disorder, Learning Disabilities, and Educable Mentally Retarded." I'm sure all those names are not politically correct any more. Now, we just refer to them as , "Politicians," LOL!:

Welcome to the group. Unfortunately, I'm new as well, so I can't really help much. I would suggest you search the Cold Hardy Banana (http://www.bananas.org/f15/) section and then post any questions there. You'll probably get more attention.
I also wanted to let you know you made me laugh with your last line :-) Thank you

Welcome.
Just to inform you, banana is a plant, not a tree.
Common mystake. You have a lot of reading to do, as we all do.
Information here is very good and members will gladly share their knowledge with you but reading what's already there is the way to go.
Have fun.

Yes a banana is a plant but don't try to tell my "know it all neighbor" that truth. He's at war with the Asian couple who have transplanted Vietnam (?) to his left; they built a "tree house" to harvest dragon fruits that go up their 40' oak tree and they have all sorts of plants that tend to hang over his fence including some "banana trees". He's forbidden me from planting any "trees" on my side that might infringe on his space. Fortunately his wife and I are in cahoots; she loves eating bananas and I don't. Unfortunately he's the kind of "his" castle. We'll see. Female power...

Since you have no qualms about announcing your location, do yourself and others a favor by updating your profile to include your town and zone. Otherwise anytime you ask about your plants someone will ask you where you live since most of us won't recall your intro message.

Welcome, Tom. Neat folks here.

Sorry to hear that, Kat. Nobody is going to tell me what I can grow in my yard unless they begin paying my property taxes and mortgage payments. They would be informed of this directly after telling me what they think I can't do. Those kinds cannot be reasoned with, so why try?
As for your education and degrees, Thomas... Once you have learned more about bananas, it will come in very handy here... :D :D

Sorry, Tom, but I'm hijacking your tread..

Hey, I've already lined up Aspundh to come dump chips in my garden beside his lot; I've measured and priced the wood to contain that garden beside my driveway but on out lotline. I've been told that Bob destroyed all citrus (healthy) on "his" property a few years ago; he also cut down a tree on my property before I owned it.

He's very pushy and mean. Sad.

Debbie, his wife, isn't allowed to grow a single tomato plant at "his" hacienda; I have donated 2' of MY land for her garden in the new bed. We're cool and we can hardly wait for it to happen; Bob honestly can't say squat. He's quoted Brevard county rules about "trees" and setbacks to me. Fine. Let him figure out how to fight herbaceous plants. Good luck, Bub...er...Bob...

Hi Tom-

Welcome to the Banana Express. :nanerwaveytrain:

Have you ever been over to the arboretum in Wooster? They have some great stuff there. Oh BTW, I'm one of those politicians you were talking about, lol. :ha: No offense taken however.

He's forbidden me from planting any "trees" on my side that might infringe on his space. He can't. All he can do is cut branches back to the property line, or the fence if he erected it, as it will be one foot inside his boundary.

Don't let him push you around and don't worry about "Female Power." The power that counts here, is called "the law," and it supersedes his crotchety attitude. If he gives you any grief over it, a simple registered letter from an attorney should do the trick. You might also look into local and state laws and ordinances governing the issue and have them printed out.

Last year, I got into it with a neighbor who killed my cat. I had his arrest records printed out and a detailed journal of every time he passed the house to harass me. He called the cops because I was "watching him" (keeping an eye on him as he mowed my next door neighbors' lawn is more like it). When CMPD showed up, I showed them the file I had accrued on him and they told him to go home.

Bottom line is: know your rights and don't be afraid to stand up for them.

Just beware, as there are a few "true nuts" out there who will go to ANY lengths to win, assert their "authority" , stay in control, or whatever you call it. These can be dangerous. Especially being you are friends with his wife, do your best to keep peace just don't let yourself be bullied. He sounds like one of those cowards who pushes women around to me.
Being at constant war with a nut next door can be exhausting.
