ok so like a few months ago i got some date palm seeds(thanks cookie) and i planted them in a pot and covered them with plastic wrap. well after seeing no growth, and the weather getting nice outside i put the pot outside and took the plastic off it. day after day and still nothing. i went out today to cut some nana leaves that had been damaged by the wind, just happened to wack a dc leaf and low and behold the date palm seeds have sprouted. i think i have 8 out of 10. i was doing a happy dance. wahoo! so maybe (keeping my fingers crossed) ill have date palms for in the house this winter. im so excited! thanks again cookie for the seeds. oh and btw, my castor beans( thanks magicgreen) have finally sprouted. i have 2 coming up. they will be moved outside tomorrow. so the moral of the story....when you are ready to give up on the seeds you planted....give them one more day and look again.:2734:

kitty don't put your castor bean in full sun, depending on which cultivar it is it needs to adjust to the sun.

thanks for the info. i usually put stuff from the house into the shade when it goes out. im glad you told me, i had a spot for it right in the sun...that would have been bad ju-ju. thanks again.

congrats on the seedlings!
they are very easy , I bought a year ago normal dates in a normal shop (Albert Heijn)
I forgot to bring them inside when it got to -5 (roots of palms are almost not hardy) but I have 3 left, they have now 3 leaves.

Sam, that's great!! Did you have any luck on the bamboo? I haven't even attempted to start mine yet. Just too much other stuff going on but I need to make the time.

The Castor Beans should be fine in full sun, as long as they are acclimated to it. There are many grown in full sun here in Phoenix, and if they can take full sun here, that pretty much means they can take full sun anywhere.

I just planted a few bamboo seeds and some more banana seeds. I am testing out the self-watering pop bottle set-up(used quart sized milk jugs). Will let you know how it works. Also, my Gunnera plant finally germinated about a week to 10 days ago. It has 4 true leaves and I am waiting for it to get gigantic, too.
This is getting to be a full time hobby, but I love it!

You are all so helpful and supportive! It really makes it fun to see what grows and what doesn't. But learning why it didn't grow is priceless info to know. Don't stop believing!!!!
