Hi what would happen if the pups are left as they are as I now hav three pups and it's the second year for the main banana.

Main banana will probably bloom soon and the pups will start growing faster and faster around when that happens. You can cut one or two off and replant them if you want to spread the mat out a bit. Sometimes the avid gardener will remove pups at intervals so that there's different stages of the lifecycle happening on the same mat. In other words, you don't want three the same size because when they bloom at the same time, it will be somewhat inefficient and unfavorable.

Thanks MediaHound So there would be no problem leaving them.

The only problem with leaving them is that the bunch size may suffer and you can end up with a mat thats huge and unruly with plants that are skinny. It's much easier to remove some pups only leaving 3-4 plants per stand, one flowering, one about 6 months from flowering, and a large sized sword pup. Your location and the type of plants can also play into the matt management system. When you do cut down the mother plant the corm will make plenty of pups which are easily removed with big chunks of corm attached. At some point you can completely remove the old corm making more room for new plants to grow.
