Can anyone tell me if I have a basjoo sword sucker or water sucker here? Or is it too early to tell? I just learned about the two and now I'm curious lol. Thanks!

Definitely a water sucker

Yeah, it's definitely a water sucker. I'd leave it to fill the lower space back in with leaves. It'll help to shade the mama's stem and the ground around it as well.

Thanks for the help everyone. So does this mean it will not grow into a mature banana tree? I've read threads they say both answers. Thanks!

Not sure about that, but they have their place. Use for low bushes or to keep leaves around the stem.

Hello Brah,

Try digging it up and planting it in a pot to see what happens. Tom

I was going to let it get about or over two feet before I removed it from the mother corm and put it in a pot for over winter. it has a second leaf coming out of the small p-stem already so hopefully it wont be long after I fertilize them.

I took up two ~18" water suckers last week. Each one had 4 pencil thick roots 6-12 inches long. I imagine letting it get to 2 feet should put it is a pretty good place.

If you dug them up, you should replant them now. They'll do better.

Sword suckers, at least on my one bigger plant, come up bigger around than my thumb, and grow fast for the first 3-4 feet. In a month they will be 3 feet tall and as thick as my arm at ground level.

In my opinion, this entire discussion is about terminology invented by marketeers.

So called water suckers are just a symptom of poor care and fertilization. Feed either of them properly and the sprout will develop normally. I have not had water sucker symptoms for well over a decade.
