Hi, my name is Mark. I live in east TN. I have been growing subtropical plants including bananas in my yard for 11 years now. I have tried many different kinds to see if they would survive our winters here unprotected. I grow a lot of them from seeds. Everything was going good for me up to four years ago when a unknown illness hit me and I was not able to take care of my plants. I lost a whole lot of them during those couple of real cold winters we had. This is the first year since then that I have felt normal and have started working back on my yard again. Before my illness hit me I had 9 types of bananas growing in the yard in the ground. I only have 4 types to survive since I was not able to take care of them. Musa Basjoo, Musa Sikkimensis Daj Giant, Musa Mekong Giant, and Musa Itinerans. I have several more types from seeds planted.

I had a similar experience except it was not an illness it was stupidity. I had Orinoco's that I had for fifty years. I had them in a shed poorly insulated and almost all froze out. Last winter I bare rooted some in a heated garage and most in the ground. No casualties from garage and very few from the ground. I covered with mulch and straw and covered with a tarp. I have a good friend (Kevin) in Indiana that taught me the process. I plan to do all in ground this year. :waving:

My problem was passing out and being so dizzy I could hardly get out of bed. It hit me all at once. I started passing out and it progressed at being dizzy all the time. Spent 2 years where I could hardly do anything without passing out. Doctors to this day have not figured out exactly what I have. Every time I bent over I passed out so I could not take care of my plants. After being a guinea pig with all these new tests and medicines they finally found some that worked on me. I am just happy I am able to get back at working in my yard again and trying to get my jungle back to where it used to be.
