I just saw another bloom on the same mat. One more chance this year for an ID.

To me it does look very similar to my Goldfinger bunches. On mine it seems like the male flowers fall off easy the first month or little more. Like in your picture. After that they stay on more if you don't touch them. Also mine bloom around 6.5-7.5 feet however I'm colder than you are. Seems like when they bloom shortly afterwards the Pstem weakens. I have all mine propped. They are strong prior to blooming. It's strange. I'm probally overprotective. I've only had fruit from the TC Goldfinger. Never the USDA Goldfinger which some think are different. Hopefully an expert will see this and ID them for you.

I just added another photo. Any ideas? At least my neighbor has left the bud alone. :banana_ba

Any Ideas on an ID yet? If I never get a true ID its okay, the banana plant produces every year and the bananas taste great.

What do they taste like? A mix of Dwarf Brazilian and Cavendish? That's how I perceive FHIA-01, Goldfinger.

I haven't tried Brazilian yet. This variety has a lemony flavor. I have three bunches of this variety hanging this year. Hopefully they will ripen before it gets cold and they stop growing.

The angle of the bunch with the flower going straight down after fruiting is complete reminds me of my Brazilian, as does the uneven fruit spread in the first pic. Flower matches pretty good as well, and one could describe the flavor as lemony, I guess...

I would be having a talk with my neighbor. I cut my flower off, too but that is what I mean, I cut it off, not my neighbor. You don't need to be harsh, just politely ask him not to. If he refuses, cut off all the flowers in his yard. :D :D Don't do that, really... even though you may want to, he might cut off your bananas.

My Brazilian, for comparison...

My flower is more slender and it has some mess on the rachis, but mine is a dwarf. Just a guess as I am not the expert here.

Here is a pic of the bunch and flower from a tall Brazilian... Look familiar?

How tall is it? With the clean rachis it isn't Dwarf Brazilian. From the photos it doesn't look tall enough to be regular Brazilian -- but I can't really judge the height well.

I wouldn't describe Dwarf Brazilian as lemony, but I could see how someone might -- definitely a little tart.

I am thinking tall Brazilian as well... I got that pic of the tall Brazilian from a thread where Gabe posted the pic and said they can be anywhere from 12-20 feet or more depending of how well fed and watered they are.. The pics at the top are obviously from the ground and the bunch is several feet above the photographer, so I guess they are kinda tall...

Still looks like Goldfinger or maybe another FHIA hybrid to me. Just a guess. Also dwarf Brazillian is one of the two direct parents of fhia-1 Goldfinger. SH-3142 is the other parent.

I have three plants blooming right now. The first plant is short at 7'. This is the shortest this plant has ever bloomed. The other two are just over 9'. I think this plant blooms usually around 10'.

Still looks like Goldfinger.

Namwa is almost universally sold as Goldfinger. The availability of true Goldfinger is highly suspect. Even the Goldfinger wiki photos (http://www.bananas.org/wiki/Musa_%27Goldfinger%27) are probably all false plants. Every time someone has sent me a corm of what was supposed to be the real thing, the nearby Beckman-Coulter lab has comeback with sequence ABB instead of AAAB.

I can vouch for the three pics of just the plants as not being Namwah, anyway. I have Namwah and the pink petioles and midrib is unmistakable and not in these pics. Other than that, I cannot input on this topic at this time.

In a year, maybe I can as I have two Goldfingers from different sources. I planted them beside each other to note any differences easily since one is said to be an "American" Goldfinger and the other the FHIA variety. Still waiting on the "American" to start pushing leaves as it was a stump in the mail. It looks like it is trying but they aren't breaking out yet.
:lurk: :lurk: :lurk:
Waiting impatiently for the end of winter... and some growth.
All my plants are growing leaves, albeit slower than summer, but one Namwah. Both Namwahs stopped growing after a cold snap a month or so ago. It was only low 40's, but stopped them dead in their tracks. One finally pushed a leaf the last few days but the other is still just sitting there.
Funny, my GM didn't slow at all from the cold.

The bananas on this plant are good. I usually get two or three bunches each year. I got 77 bananas off of this plant. I'm going to make some beer with the first bunch of bananas I froze. Hopefully it will taste good. If the beer is good I will just call it my banana beer plant. :nanadrink:

Agreed. 100% not namwah.

I'd still go with "American Goldfinger".

As the saying goes ... "a year of field tests can save you a day in the lab."

Yes, but when you don't have a lab... :D
Plus lab results taste like crap.

I just saw another bloom on this same Banana Matt. Maybe all the rain started it to grow.

The Beer I made from this plants bananas is very good. You can smell bananas and really taste the banana flavor in the beer.

Mystery solved it's the banana beer plant :nanadrink:

Susan

Ingredients:

Below are pictures of the 6.0 pounds of Malt Extract (Briess Wheat LME)
1 ounce of Hops (E.K. Goldings)
2 1/2 to 3 pounds of mashed bananas
Safale S-05 Yeast
Ferment at 67-70 Degrees F.

Directions:

Bring 3 1/2 gallons of water to a boil. Turn off heat and add all the Malt Extract, stirring to mix and dissolve thoroughly. Bring back to a rolling boil, and add the hops. This is to remain at an active boil for a full 60 minutes. (You can add Hops directly to the boil or use a Mesh Bag or Hop Spider.) At the last 10 Minutes of the boil add the mashed bananas. At the end of the boil cool the Wart (Beer Mixture) to 70 to 75 degrees, and add to the fermenter. Add cold water to make 5 gallons. Pitch the yeast, aerate and seal the fermenter. Add the air lock and ferment at 67-70 degrees F for 14 days. Prior to transferring mixture to bottling bucket boil 3/4 cup of corn sugar (dextrose) in two cups of water. Cool for several minutes and add to the bottling bucket. Transfer the beer, and mix well to incorporate the dextrose. Store bottles and allow to condition and carb up for 10 days minimum.

Could you link where you posted the recipe for your satisfying brew? I'm just getting ready to start "beering" again. Though I'm a wheat gal at heart, I'm always up for trying something new. H
