View Full Version : FYI - Jeff Earl's first 2008 Cal Gold pup on eBay

Just thought I'd give a head's up for those that Jeff has put up a Cal Gold pup on eBay. There as been a lot of discussion about what a Cal Gold is and is not, including lots of speculation. Jeff has become a good friend of mine and I'm of the opinion that he does not make any false claims. Nobody is claiming that this is the best banana in the world. However, it does reliably fruit for us in USDA zone 9 of California.
Check out the wiki. I posted a summary of the eBay auction results from last year. I think Jeff sold about a dozen of them and they ranged in price from around $41 to $150.01, as I recall. Jeff's starting price of $29 is reasonable, IMHO, but some people go crazy in this free market society. It will be interesting to see if the slower economy, housing crunch, and high fuel prices have any influence on the price of Cal Gold pups in 2009. Maybe we can use it as an economic indicator! LOL

Wow, there were 21 bids by 6 different bidders and the pup went for $101! Maybe we're not headed for recession after all!!! LOL
Did anyone here at the International Banana Society bid???

Harvey , call me mad but I bought it.
I missed out on a few last year so I went for it and put in a bid of 101 at the last minute , I figured the other guy had put 100 as his max bid, I guess I was right :nanadrink:
I wanted an early season plant so it would get a good size this year.
Happy to give it garden space, well in my case container space.
Later

p.s. Sorry if I out bid another member, some of the guys must have pups of CG.

Dear Mad. I mean Steve! LOL
I am glad to hear that you are not the victim of subprine lending and now broke. Maybe you are really from the south, not France or Maryland. I read the other day that some state like Missouri or Arkansas had about 1% of their homeowners with subprime mortgages while 67% of homeowners had no mortgage at all!!!
Best of luck with your new formerly lost pup. ;)
Cheers,
Harvey

Thanks Harvey , we went fixed rate for our house in France , we felt we wanted to know what the payment was each month and no surprises wanted.
Here we just rent, I wish it was worth buying but for a three or four year US stay the maths says it's not woth getting a huge loan. Love to be free and clear of loans on a place but it will take a long time. So I spend money on plants for fun and exercise :-)
Looking forward to getting the CG and road testing it.

Hey, Mitchel, I think it is more of a matter of not having outrageous home prices!
I'm not that old and am on schedule to be debt free next year. :) That does NOT count my share of the national debt!!! :(
Steve, I agree with the math guidelines you quoted, though you could make a case for still buying if you felt lucky and wanted to bet (as in gamble bit time) on a recovery in our housing market.

Hey Steve! Congrats on your new CG pup! Mine was the first to put out leaves this year and one of only 3 plants that didn't die to the ground, or die completely. I got mine from Jeff personally and have to echo Harvey's comments. Jeff is upstanding banana grower and only interested in perpetuating a rare variant, not in padding his wallet.

Thanks for the congrates, I'm sure Jeff is a stand up guy. He only sells a few pups a year, it cannot be a huge money maker for him. I'm very pleased to have a chance to grow the plant. I understand it does not pup much, be nice to have an insurance plant just in case I lose the main one. Maybe I better buy another LOL
I'll grow it indoors over winter, maybe gets some grow lights going this year, we will see.

Steve, I don't know if it is a shy pupper (?) or not. I've got one with 4 pups right now, though I don't know if 2 of them will both make it since they are very close to one another and very tiny. I'm actually hoping for more to come.
(FYI - no requests for pups, please, I have commitments to a couple of people already.)

I wouldn't think being in zone 10a would lead you to have great interest in this selection. That said, I'm certain Jeff will have more on eBay and I'll probably post it here when I see them.

I'd like to see CA gold introduced into tissue culture, so people that don't want to fork out a Benjamin can grow it. I'd like one just can't see paying that much for one.

I read once that Cal Gold could not be tissue cultured successfully, but I don't know if that was simply speculation as I've never actually heard of anyone trying.

I have not found it to be lacking in the pup department. I have cut 3 off mine, and I have 3 more showing. It does seem to take a little longer for them to come up, though. I'll have one later this summer after they get big enough to cut and ship. Keep watch on the classifieds...
I need to start another pup in my own plantation, just for rmore of them. I like the size of the plant as it's a bit smaller than a Dwarf Orinoco, but taller than a SDC, fitting into smaller gardens with space issues. I also like the cold hardiness. It was the first to put up leaves...in late February...

05-27-2008, 07:45 PM
HI Taylor, I did not really mean to get both, but I figured I needed a spare and I'd pay about the same for a spare , so I bid about the same and got it. There are a couple of the UK guys who want a pup at some point so I figure I better get two CA. That's it for me ,I'm not bidding on anymore and I suspect the next few will go cheaper. I missed out last year on the early CG pups from Mr Earl so I went for it this year, I figure the early season pups should be a pretty good size before I have to Greenhouse them or bring them in for the Winter. The first pup arrived in great shape, three good leaves , a good chunk of corm and roots. It's in the Greenhouse in a shaded spot getting a few more roots now. I should be able to put it out in full Sun in a week or so.

Anybody have any idea why this plant can't be tissue cultured? Unlike the variegated banana which have the chimeral meristem tissue this plant should have only one cell line and therefore lend itself to cloning. There seems to be enough demand to warrant the initial lab cost.:bananarow::bananarow:

Here is the most popular and reliable website for "lightweight" TCulturing. Carol Stiff, PhD, the owner, travels around the country giving workshops that are comprehensive and reasonably priced. That's how I got mine. I got to pick which one got cut. I am very happy with the whole experience as Jeff was my teacher for 'Pup Cutting 101'. I had only read how to cut a pup before that.
Jeff doesn't have a big nursury, only what he can grow on a small city lot. His available pups are few to start with. Then people like me twist his arm to sell one in person...heh, heh...

Why did the seller change from TWood226 to BanTropics? ????? ???
What the...
Uhhh...because he wanted to??? I never bothered to ask Jeff what was up with his former eBay ID of TWood226; it always seemed odd to me. I think since Jeff is finding that he is selling more and more bananas on eBay that he'd like an ID that fit his activity better (Ban is short for banana, I take it).
If you really want to know, I can ask Jeff (or you can yourself), but what's the significance?
BTW, I just have a saved eBay search that shows me when Jeff lists another one for sale and my searched carried through with his new ID because it's tied to the seller, not the name.

I was just wondering...it is significant if Jeff isn't "Jeff". But if BanTropics IS Jeff (which I suspect) everything is fine.

Taylor, IT IS JEFF EARL, okay? I thought that was clear in my prior post. My saved eBay search lets me know when Jeff's account lists a Cal Gold and it reported the auction to me even though his ID name changed. If you are still have doubts, you can click on the little symbols right next to the ID which indicates a change in the ID in the past 30 days. It reflects the change he made. http://contact.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ReturnUserIdHistory&requested=bantropic shows he changed his ID 3 days ago.
So, is the current bidder a member here???

Harveyc, I watched that news video of his yard ((which was super neat btw)) but more so than the bananas which is awesome ((I only live 2 hours south of him and it gives me hope for my own)) but the news story showed a macadamia nut tree in the front. I never believed that a macadamia nut tree could grow in this area due to some of the wicked frosts we get. ((Sorry for the oddball question)) but do you know what variety of Macadamia that is, if it's grafted ect...? The California gold is awesome, not to mention the pineapples, and that avacado cross he has ((I drooled when I seen his tree)), but that macadamia nut tree... ... double wow!!!
harveyc
07-24-2008, 04:44 PM
Hi Ahava,
Jeff has a 'Beaumont' macadamia, but it doesn't look too good right not as he hacked it up. He found it to be a nuisance because of the litter, I believe. However, when I visited him about a month ago he was having second thoughts and was going to stake a new shoot from above the graft.
Another friend ("Jack") in California has about 70 macadamia trees and his favorite is also Beaumont. Jeff got down to about 20F in January 2007 (same as me) and Jack reported that he got down to 19F, so they are hardier than I thought also. Jack sent me some seeds about six weeks ago and I planted them recently, hoping to graft them some day. Hope they make it. Waiting for a seedling to bear can be a test of patience, I here.
I also found out that if you just dry your own macadamia nuts by air and crack them (can e a challenge without the right equipment), they are very good and quite different than roasted ones from the store. They have a high level of oil/fat in them, but a healthy form, and this is tasty. The ones from the store reportedly have some of the oil removed and they are less flavorful.
I suggest you give it a try.
Jeff has many other interesting things, but that should be left for another forum.

Another one! I think his ads are misleading. The banana pup he sold earlier had this note:
Please Note...
One of my fruiting trees has sent off an extra pup.
With no room in my garden right now... I have decided to put it up for bid.
This will be the last pup up for sale on ebay until Spring 2009
Since this ad, he has listed two more pups on Ebay. People keep thinking that this is the last pup he'll have for sale until next year so the price just goes higher and higher with each auction yet he keeps listing more pups.

You bring up good points but, in all fairness, I'd like to make two points:
1. Pups do often come up even after you think no more will come. But, surely, this pup was around 10 days ago or so when he listed his prior pup for sale and made that comment.
2. Jeff told me in person that he keeps wanting to keep more pups so he can expand his plantings but people are paying high prices and he is unable to resist selling yet more pups. I know that at $158+ I'd be very tempted to dig up one of my two pups and sell it!!!
In the past, Jeff has not sold very late in the season because the pups may not thrive late in the year so he has just held them over until the following year.

I gotta step in on this thread...
Harvey is right on the money.
What happens is that I evaluate the total number of pups that I plan on selling mid season. ( generally about 10 ) Then I determine how many that I am going to sink back into the ground for next years crop.
Rest assured ... there is never any attempt at deception in my auctions .
In both cases where I sold pups after the " Last pup " remark... they were pups that came out when the plants fruited at the same time back in early summer... I had no idea that they would grow so fast to be available for auction. But with the warm temps we have had ...things changed.
I will always reserve the right to pull up a pup and sell it if the growing conditions change and demand is there.
Clearly it was.... at $158 per pup.
Come on... who wouldn't dig into their stash of pups for that price. ??
Unfortunately... this also means that there will be less pups for sale next spring.
Also, This is why there are so few pups available... and the auctions prices go so high. I tend to sell more than I plan one year... and run short the next.
For those who complain about the price... Ask your self... If you were me... and could sell a pup for $30 or $150 what price would you take? That is why they go to ebay , I let demand set the price.
And unless the price is so ridiculously high... that I cant refuse.... This will be the last auction of the year.
( Honestly, I would have to start digging up last years plants if I wanted to sell any more this summer anyway)
In the future though... I will leave out the date that I will resume auctions.... ie April 09.
As that date is something that is hard to guarantee.

hi there jeff....a banana buck is something that you get for reading and posting in the threads. you also get nana bucks for posting pics. you can use them to "buy" things for your profile, or if your like a lot of us...we use it as"money" to buy plants from each other. for example 1 banana buck represents $1. i bought 18 foxtail palm tree seeds for 75.00 nana bucks.that would equal out to $4.17 each seed. at this time i was cashless and the gentleman sold them to me for nana bucks. wahoo! they are fun to play with. we also have the banking for "savings and loans".

Jeff, I appreciate you for posting. Sure, I would sell many pups as well since they are going for so high right now. For me, that's no problem. If someone wants to pay over $150 for a pup, then I say go for it. On a teacher's salary, it's not in my pocketbook.
I was concerned that having the auction date for next year implies there are no other pups available for sale either because there aren't any or that they are too small to separate. I bid on the last auction simply because it was listed as the last pup for the year...my last chance to get a CA pup. I was outbid of course.
Anyway, thanks for responding to the posting. I appreciate your honestly and your thoughts. Evidently, you have a plant other banana enthusiasts are dying to have.

Hi Austin, Sorry about any confusion....
I took another look at my listing... A better way of wording it would have been " mostly likely won't have or probably won't have" anymore to sell.
To be honest... at the time I didn't have anymore nor did I intend to sell anymore.
Sorry that you were outbid, contact me next summer... maybe they will be priced for someone on a teachers salery.

5 foot: Yours is almost there!
Taylor... Your fruiting bananas are great looking!
Who woulda thunk it in zone 8?
(Don't make me say I told you so :P )
Your plant is exactly what I experienced long ago the first time I fruited this
banana.
Only you are in a even colder winter area than I .
Your short tree tree height is something of a puzzle to me5 ft tall at fruiting? Looks closer to 4 1/2...LOL
Anyway For some reason... perhaps it depends on the pup.. sword or " squat " type, ...some of my trees fruit at a taller height. I have had them fruited anywhere from 4 ft... to nearly 8 ft... most are in the 6 ft range. And the older the mat is the larger the bunch..but not necessarily larger trees
So just because you got " only 22 fruit " this year.... next year it could be 50 fruit...on a 6 1/2 ft tree... theres a little bit of variability with this tree.
I donno why. Doesn't effect the taste of the fruit nor the hardiness though.
Also.... Let the fruit stay on the tree as long as you can before cutting them down... I have harvested bunches of fruit in mid december after a frost killed the leaves and the fruit still ripened... the longer the fruit stay on the tree the better the flavor . As rule I do harvest before the first freeze of the year... you don't want to have banana ice cream. :P
Jeff
BTW... You wanna sell some of those pups back to me?
I am out!
Taylor

Hey Jeff,
I actually need to change my signature, I will be (hopefully) getting 23 fruit!
My fruiting CG (4 1/2 to 5 foot) actually has a pup that is taller than the original, and I just found another pup today on another "mat" which I can call it thus since it now has 4 pups plus a mom. What does that make? A total of 12 or 13 on both mats? Not sure...
Going to see how it over-winters in ground this year...basement last year. I am sure they will do just fine since I see Orinoco coming back from the roots here, I just want to protect stem.
Thanks for the compliments! Will do on the harvest time. I hope they taste good!
Need pups? Will have to fight for one on one of my auctions! (Only had 1 auction, went for $95).
PS: Can you upload some pictures of your California Gold "in habitat" or yard in general? Would love to see it all...
