Looking to grow a super dwarf up here in Canada. Just wondering which variety would be best to grow indoors and in a container for its lifespan? And also an online store where I can purchase seeds for said plant. Thanks.
Hey fellow Canadian! I've got dwarf Cavendish and super dwarf Cavendish. Both did well in containers and passed winter indoors without problem.
You won't get seeds from these. You need pups.
Try updating your location in your profile. That's going to help us in helping you!

Will do thanks
I'm located in vaughan which is a city just north of Toronto. I've also seen online the 'truly tiny' variety seeds available for sale
Are these the same as the super dwarf Cavendish?
To my knowledge, Truly tiny doesn't seed. I bought 2 of them last year but I'm sure they're SDC. I know Canada banana farms sell some plants in Ontario. There's some members around Toronto too. I've got some pups but they're a bit small and I'd have to check if I already prmised them to another member... Ive got a lot of an unknown varity that looks like it's a Cavendish cultivar. It pups like crazy!
Floraexotica in Montreal ships and is very reliable. Most of my stuff comes from him. He is well known in Canada. I'm not sure what he has left though...
I know you've got Basjoo. What else do you grow?

As of now the basjoo is my first banana plant I'm trying to grow. Having a much smaller variety of banana that I can grow indoors in a pot would be great to learn to grow.
I'll just keep a look out for some seeds I can get my hands on.

Be careful with seeds because SDC doesn't make seeds. And anything you plant by seed will produce bananas with seeds. Lots of the Truly Tiny/SDC/Ice Cream/many more seeds on eBay are fake. Just like the rainbow pink blue and orange photoshopped bananas they try to sell. Lol.
Musa velutina is a fun one to grow by seed. Look it up. Not as short as a SDC/Truly Tiny but easy to grow and blooms fast.
If I was forced to grow 1 type inside and actually wanted it to bloom/bananas I think I would pick Raja Puri. It stays short and I have seen pictures on here of them fruiting in pots indoors.
Just research the variety before you buy the seeds. If you do buy SDC/Truly Tiny seeds keep us updated because I would love to know what it actually is.
Good luck hope you find something.
If you want to eventually eat the fruit, do not buy seeds. Those things are very hard and you might chip a tooth on one of them. I'll get back to you tommorow. I'll check what I have available at the moment. My plants have all survived a winter inside and I know they're tough.
Please, please listen to JP. Do not waste money on banana seeds unless you want to grow ornamental musas maybe and maybe just weeds. Musas that produce edible fruits do not have viable seeds. (I hate hucksters and liars who take advantage of innocents. No, there is no Blue Java seed! Or Super Dwarf Cavendish or AeAE. BTW, buying pups from an unknown source won't guarantee edible fruit either.)
It takes time to get a flower even here in FL or did for me because my poor long suffering ladies have been uprooted and dragged around until I got settled so I don't fault them taking 3 years. I joined this forum soon after I purchased a Dwarf Cavendish; they're readily available here. And then I started reading; I've learned a lot. Heck, I learned that DCs aren't super special. Fine. But I bought another when I left mine behind in Jacksonville. Why? Why not? I can't explain or justify but I did.

JP's unknown cultivar pup like nothing I've ever seen. We bought 21 from him and have something like 60-70 now.....

sdc always choke, nothing but bad experiences - little prince too. better to go with something like dwarf cavendish, California gold, raja puri. They live as long as you let them. the bigger the pot the bigger the plant. I have had one or two of my current for 6 years

Hey Tommy, live in North York but work up in Vaughan. I have many of the varieties discussed in this thread: DC, SDC, RP, Cali gold, and basjoo. I'm currently having a lot of trouble with squirrels, but once the pups get big enough, you're more than welcome to have them. I have promised the first pups from certain varieties to a few people on here, but there will be more than enough to go around. Send me a PM if you're interested.
