i put my musella lasiocarpa, saba and orinoco( these are my big nana trees) outside a few days ago to get them used to the outside conditions. my dad calls me today and tells me one of the bus drivers wants a nana tree. i said tell him to go to the nursery.( i only share with a few people..lol!) my dad told him thats what i would say and the guy told my dad," i dont want to go to the nursery...i want one of hers, and that hes willing to pay for one." so i told my dad to tell him to come see me in a few days and we can discuss what kind he wants. what is a person to do? hummmm. LOL! i told my mom i only had 3 basjoo pups and 2 were spoken for.then she chimes in and says," i want the last basjoo pup." i didnt bother to tell anyone that i have 3 d.oronico pups and one of those is spoken for. ok so now at the school bus terminal, everyone up there is calling me,"the banana lady." this is so cool. i guess that bananas are more addictive then i ever thought possible. my mom told me dont you give it away for free....well duh! i just might have to sell him one.... to finance an order i have waiting.

Hmmmm GL with that decision Sam, but definately get some money out of it, especially if he's not willing to buy one at a nursery. Do the nurseries there have a good selection of musa?

I can't sell or give away ANY, till my babies make more babies!

This will be my 1st full year with them, and I want to watch all stages of their growth !!
And learn, and record down what I've learned.
And heaven forbid.....1 plant dies and I gave its sister or brother away! OH My!
Now praying everyone of my nannas does fine for me.......Well then...another year or 2, I just might be able to do some talkin'.........(giggle)

my fav gh dosent have a large selection of musas. and all of his are tc, but they look very healthy. the last time i was there he had basjoos, hcm's and helena hybrid. the one basjoo i got from him must have been sick from the get go. because it up and died on me. but the nanas that i have gotten from members here and at the garden show have done really well. im not saying he dosent have great plants, you just have to know what to look for. i mean i bought 6 nanas from him and only one died, those are good odds. he said that nobody here in tn wanted nanas so he quit selling them. i asked him if he could special order and he said he might be able to. lol!

It's the way it goes. I've got my trading guys and girls here and in Europe , then there are the people who live near the house , France or here that say "Could I have one of those " or "Where can I get one of those" I always find a spare plant and hand it over :-) . It's Water Lilies this year that I keep being asked for, which is not a problem as two of my Hardy Water Lilies have multipal growth points this year. So one job for this weekend is dividing up the Water Lilies. I was glooking forward to multipal flowers from those growth points but there you go , I'll be back to single flowers for a season, oh well.
I find what goes around comes around. In Europe my friend Mark gives me very rare Bamboos, he will not sell them if they are really rare and he only has one or two but he will give them to the odd person like me if there is a passion for the plant. He and I both sell plants once in awhile if there is no trade about or we have lots of stock. I keep promising myself I'll get more business like about the whole thing even if I just manage to break even on the plants I buy.

it seems we spend more for our addiction then we bring in. is that funny? i have a friend who had 1-4 plants in her house...now she has the nana bug. i gave her a basjoo and a hcm, and they are doing great for her. i like the trading back and forth. to me thats more fun then buying a plant. jmo

Yes, I like trading plants too. Often times you might get a better deal rather than buying the plant anyways. :D

that was my thinking too. its like going to a swamp meet and seeing what you can barter. it so much fun. the guy that is suppossed to be coming over knows nothing about nanas...so ill direct him to the nana org, before i let him buy any nana from me. not just that but the pups i have havent been seperated as of yet, so hell have to wait till i do. and i wont let him take one home till i see new growth on the removed pup.

Someone here said earlier "You have to be worthy of owning a banana-plant!"
I have given away loads of plants to all kinds of people, but it's way more fun if they really take care of it, enjoy watching it grow, and even gets interested in the hobby.
If I later find out that they just put it in a northern window, forget about it, and treat i like any old houseplant - I regret giving away a plant.

I agree with you Erland, I would hate it if anyone I gave anything to didn't take care of the plants!

I've given away Needle Palms, Sabals, and bananas, not to mention gingers and brugs and whatever else to friends...only to find out that they died not too long afterwards. I never give these friends any plants anymore. I'll sell them one in a heartbeat though! If it's somebody that I know, and that I know will take care of it and treat it like I would, then that's a different story.
Sam, charge him $20 for a small pup since the nursery plants aren't good enough for him. Or better yet, just say no! Sounds like you don't have too many to spare, so just don't.

mskitty,
The word is out that you are the girl to get bananas from....you may have to start a business if you get too many more pups....
Today was cool as I met a neighbor who has a smaller banana on his balcony...here I thought I was the only one in these apts....so the competition begins!!!!!

i was gonna tell the guy( he stopped by yesterday and to top it off was rude...) that if he didnt know how to grow a nana that he would have to come to the nana org to understand the concept of growing a banana tree. its not just put it in the pot and let it go. if he had issues with that then, he would have to go to a nursery. i hate the fact that you give something to someone and tell them how to take care of it, and 2 weeks later its dead. i had issues about this with my mother and my youngest sister. when he comes back tomorrow a lot of him getting one of my nanas is gonna depend on his attitude and how hes willing to listen. if not i will send him to my fav. gh to get a nana. i only have 3 pups on my musella las. ( well i have another one that is 2 inches tall) and i still havent seperated the pups off mom yet. so he still would have to wait, so i can make sure that there is new growth before he takes it home. ill just have to wait and see. btw...if he thinks hes getting my big nanas ....dude is totally wacked. i worked to hard on these to let someone have them. lol. zac...how did you find out your neighbor has a nana? were you talking shop with him? that is so cool. "let the games begin!" lol. i started 4 jacaranda trees for my mother and told her if she killed them i would never start another plant for her for the rest of her life. i told my sis the same thing...apparently this guy just wants one because nobody here has them......im just not comfortable with him having one. i know that sounds bad but you just get a feeling. thanks for all the help you guys have been.

Ms Kitty, It seems he is not really interested into getting a banana he would take care of, but more of an exotic accessory to put in his front yard (he should get a plastic one then :p). Definitely, if you don't have a good feeling about it, then it's not a good idea to trust one of your babies to a stranger. Naners are like pets! Well good luck!

Eh the thing I noticed when working in a lawn and garden dept was that true plant people for the most part are really nice, easy-going cool people. (Mostly, you get a few wackos) If the guy is rude to someone he asks for a banana plant from. I would tell him to screw off. I mean seriously. If he treats you like that, how well with that careless attitude of his will he take care of a banana plant. That's how I look at it anyways

I don't believe I've ever had anyone be rude to me when requesting a plant .
When I was a Teenager I raised exotic Pheasants and sold a lot to older guys, I'd tell then just how to take care of the birds and what kind of cage to build , if they did not have the right cage I'd tell then I could not sell them a bird. I always want the guys to come over , listen , pay and go away :-) .
I guess now I'm older and a pretty big guy I have less problems with people than I did then lol .
When I started with Exotic plants in the garden I was helped out by the kind members of UKOasis , I had no money as we were renovating a house from scratch, with a two year old to watch and no power , no water , no sewer. Once I had trading stock I tried to pay all the kind Gardeners back. When coming from France to here last year I was helped just as much by the kind folks here. I would have had just the shadow of a garden last year if it was not for Bananas.org. Gardeners are usually fine generous people, who help out others in need. I often plan to expand my supply of a certain plant only to find I give all the pups/off shoots away , that's just the way it goes.
Many thanks to those who have helped me out this year.
I like helping out deserving Teens with there plant collections as I was helped to learn about stuff I was into by one of my High School Teachers. He helped me learn about Pheasants , to Hunt and Trap and most importantly how to be an active Wildlife Conservationist . As a side note , a lot of the spots I Trapped in are now built on, houses and such , so did the Trapper kill all the Beavers and such or the Bulldozer, the answers clear.
Anyway , Thanks again one and all
Later
Steve
Best wishes

its just when killing a plant is accident i understand...it happens to the best of plant freaks, but when its done by sheer neglect, that really grips my banana. if you stop and think about all the work and worry you put into a plant, your time and energy..and the person you give it to dosent water it or feed it, after they say i know how to take care of it....it makes me feel like they have killed part of your family. it does me anyway.
