Mine survived at the corm from last winter in a zone 9. I'll keep the ground drier this comming winter...

microfarmer, good to hear. Maybe mine will have a chance of surviving. Thanks!

We didn't have a real cold winter, but I didn't exclude water from the ground so I got some rot in the main stem. I thought I lost it completely. The plant is pushing up 3 pups now, so I will be more careful next winter.

JoeReal grows them successfully in Davis, CA (zone 9 [/14 with some marine influence]), and gave me mine.

Good luck!:bananaflipflop:

microfarmer,

Congrats, with your pups and thanks for the your words of encouragment. I'll do my best with it and keep it in a protected location. I'm unsure about keeping water off of it though. Do you put a tarp or something over it?:2747:

Mine in France has survived in zone 9 (-6°c). seem to be cold resistant.

Thanks, Dean, but the credit has to go to Manzano. I put just a black lawn-n-leaf bag on it, and a THICK layer of woodchip mulch which saved the 2 pups... I have an idea for some banana 'coozies' though. I gotta find the right material first.

Next year, I'll insulate and cover the ground to exclude the winter watering. We usually have wet winters around freezing, with occasional temps as low as 20F. I'm positive it was more the wet ground than the cold temps that killed the main stem.
