Here's a few pics of my laterita as I was getting ready to repot it last weekend. It overwintered in the pot. Check out those rhizomes!

Just looked at the pictures of the laterita rhizomes. Wow, so that is where mine came from. I think the one I got from you is growing. I don't see fresh green coming out yet but the middle of the stem is raising higher. I set the pot outside during the day yesterday and I think soon I'll be able to leave it out.

Deb,
Glad to hear that your laterita is beginning to grow for you. I'm sure if you slowly adjust it, it will be able to take full sun again in no time. Let me know when you get a bloom!

My laterita that I divided and sold pups and corms of has already bloomed for me! That's only like 3 weeks ago that I divided it! Some of you won't like this, but it bloomed really low (like 1' tall), and it wasn't the main stem, so I cut the bloom off even with the soil line so that the main plant can go ahead and put it's energy into roots, new growth, and new pups. I know how easily this banana flowers so I didn't really hesitate to cut it off. I know it will bloom again in a few weeks. In hindsight, I wish I'd taken a pic of it to share with everyone here before I cut it. Oh well. Hopefully all of you who got pups or corms from me will be rewarded with blooms later this summer as well!

I looked at the tallest pstem (about 3' tall) when I got home yesterday and it has a bud beginning to swell! That's a pretty fast turnaround...divided at the beginning of April, and blooming 3 weeks later! I'll post a pic when it gets a little further along.

yours bloomed at 3 ft. tall? hummm. how often do you fert outside? my lateritas have been in the ground for maybe a week and a half. thats good news if it blooms at 3 ft. i dont have too long to wait. hahahahaha. when mine blooms, i will do catwheels across the driveway. that will be a site for the neighbors.LOL! do they flag like the rest of the nanas do?

Yes, they do send up a flag leaf first. I think the reason mine is blooming so early is that I saved two of the biggest pstems from last year to put back in the pot so they were naturally futher along (maturity-wise) than something smaller or something that had died back to ground level. I've even seen this one put up a bud just slightly above ground level (like 6") and bloom just after breaking dormancy. It truly is a fun plant to grow!
As for fertilizer, I really don't fertilize as often as I should probably...especially considering that it's in a pot. The soil I used this year had some fertilizer in it already and I did give it a shot of Miracle Grow about a week ago when I was out fertilizing my other pots.

Hey, I'm not sure what's going on with yours as I made sure all that I sent out as rhizomes looked like they had growing points. What conditions are you tyring to grow them in? How warm are you keeping them and how much water are they getting? I gave some to a coworker (rhizomes as well) at the same time and his are up and growing. I'm sort of confused myself. Keep me updated please.
