I was wondering, is there any way to prevent leaves from shreading as they are coming out of the p-stem? Would maybe using a few light rubber bands work until the leaf fully emerges? Would that damage the leaf? Any thoughts? Sounds kinda funny, I know.. but it's just a pet peeve of mine that new leaves have to get shreaded only because they haven't fully emerged yet.

Well, you can obtain the plastic tubes that are used to store tennis balls. Just cut out one end, remove the cap on the other and insert like a sleeve. Then secure the plastic tube over the pseudostem, and you can do it several ways. The tube is transparent, and rigid for your needs. It is long enough to prevent the initial shredding. Use more tubes if you need. by joining them end to end taped on a couple of long bamboo sticks.

Oh no, nothing like that. I'm more speaking of wind damage which by the coast it's VERY WINDY all the time.

My best advice would be to pretend that you like them that way!

Greenhouse is a bullet-proof solution. Shredded leaves are still functional, just not pretty. Let them be,

I suggest you plant a boat load of them like pitangadiego since this will shelter many of them in the center and they will end up looking nicer. The only suggestion I'd have over Jon's design is to have one open space in the center to set up a lounge chair when you want some sun. ;)
Cheers,
Harvey

Josh if you want clear tubes in length you can get the covers for florescent bulbs and cut them to length. I think I like the wind barrier idea though.

I live on the coast too, and the leaves on my plants are always shredded. It's a small price to pay considering all the other benefits we enjoy growing tropicals in S.Fl.
