Can anyone help to ID this banana please. It was labeled up as Musa Bronze.
It looks like one of the Ornata group to me.
I did think it was a Velutina at first but the fruit is not hairy or pink enough.
I was given some seed from the plant that was growing in Madeira.

Isn't Musa Bronze the same as Laterita ?

It's not Musa ornata 'Bronze', which is the same as M. laterita. Looks to be a standard M. ornata to me, but I can't tell for sure. Is the very tip of the male bud yellow? If so, it is probably M. ornata.

Thanks Frank. I was sure it wasn't a Bronze as the colour was wrong.
Probably Ornata Pink or maybe Lavender.
Thats the only picture I have of it. I will just have to wait for one of the 90 I was given to germinate and flower.
Over 20 are floaters ...do you think its still worth sowing them ?
I see Erland sow some in the banana video so I guess its ok.

"Standard" M. ornata has green fingers, this one has purple, so its not that. Its a hybrid of some kind, there are tons of these kinds of plants all with different names depending on which nursery you buy it from. You might as well plant all the seeds, you never know which ones will germinate.

Yes, definately plant the floaters. When planting palms, they allways tell you to discard floaters because rotting palm-seeds are more or less hollow inside. Forget this rule for musa!
Because of the banana-seeds' "eyes", gas sometimes gets trapped here and gives them buoyancy.
In my experience, these seeds often sink within a few days.
Good luck with germinating!

The Plant was in the botanicle gardens in Madeira.
I have sown all the seeds ...floaters too.
Will keep you posted.
