pretty as any flower in it. (Phew, that was hard to admit. :))

It did have the good grace, to stick around until I had retrieved my camera and and then it sat

I received from a friend 6 seeds (fully one half of her own) of a New Zealand Castor Bean. Due to a
scew-up of Canada Post they arrived fairly late in the season and I could not be sure, that there
would be enough time for some of the seeds on the new plants to fully mature. Accordingly I
planted only two of them, keeping the rest for next year
In order to maximize the survival chance for at least one of them, I separated them, after they
started developing secondary leaves, by planting one outside in the sunlight and the other I left
on the window sill. The latter is developing faster and is the one shown on the below pictures.
Presumably the nights are still a bit too cool out there.
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=49317 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=49317)
This photo shows the plant as it is now.
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=49318 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=49318)
This picture details a curious phenomenon, which I had never observed before. On the petiole of
each leaf is a tiny knob, on top of which forms a tiny water bubble. That bubble is less then 1 mm
in diameter though shown here hugely magnified. If I plot it up by touching it with my finger, it
reappears within an hour or two.

Okay, the ID for the butterfly in my post below is in.
My wife sent on the photo to a friend in Holland and she came back with the identification,
unasked for, but much appreciated. Thus is the power of the internet :)
It is a 'Tiger Swallowtail' butterfly, Papilio Rutulus the 'State Insect of Virginia'

Is there a particular time of day when it is strongest? I ask because I know some plants favor different times of day, and others do it all the time.

I'm not so sure that it is a particular time of day as is the relative humidity. The less humid the air, the more intense seems to be the aroma. South Florida tends to be a semi-arid environment six to eight months of the year, which is mostly when the Sapodilla blooms. :jalapenonaner:

I know what will be blooming in the Spring
About 1500+ fall bulbs I will be planting
I extended the garden by my front fence out about 2'.....64' long
So between that, a new 10x24' garden & redoing flowers along my walkway I'm ordering a bunch
Not as many as I did in 2005......over 5,000 that year

Your unknown looks to be a Princess Flower or Glory Bush "tibouchina urvilleana" which is a tropical/sub-tropical shrub zones 9 - 11. It flowers in the autumn...triggered by the cooler temperatures
Mine is also flowering but I have since moved it into the greenhouse as nights are dropping to 5C at night.

Each year it is more of a struggle to wrestle my 4 large Brugs back into the garage for the long winter, but when they bloom especially now in the Fall, their perfume hypnotizes me into doing it once again in order to save them for another year. And especially since, after six years, there is no more need to bend down to them, I can just walk up next to them or underneath to catch the fragrance or snap a picture! Plus in the years when they last - don't get frosted - until after Halloween - they are the most exotic flowers in this Pittsburgh neighborhood for the big night's wanderings!! :)

Pam, this is my first year with the plant but I think with mulch it will survive without the leaves. It is one great plant.
This is where I got the plant. They have a good write up.

The banana passion vine is very aggressive.Passiflora Tacsonia do not like high temps. They grow best in cooler zones San Francisco has ideal conditions for them.

I have heard that it is a bad invasive in Hawaii and I hadn't seen it in FL... now I know why. I've actually had it growing in a pot in the shade. I thought maybe the shade was part of the reason why the plant was so weak. Most of the stems would break off just by moving them a little. Usually in Florida most full sun plants will do OK in some shade since the summer heat and humidity is like a pressure cooker. I've only seen a few types of Passiflora in FL and it seems like the vines are short lived.

This one ? Passiflora vitifolia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Passiflora_vitifolia) will grow okay in FL. but blooms better in winter there. The fruit on that one isn't worth eating .

Yes, that's probably it unless there are other red varieties around. I assume that one is "grape leaved" hence vitifolia? Good help to ID it out of bloom. I see it sold everywhere, but I never see it anyone's garden. I had heard that it is grown as an annual around here... maybe because of nematodes? I don't know why for sure. I wanted to grow a variety for the fruit mostly... I'm having issues with rabbits eating the leaves anyhow... might not be meant to be.

That might be the one I had on my list to try to find... sounds familiar. I kind of gave up on my passiflora quest b/c they don't seem to label the cultivars around here. I was going to get it online at one point, but opted for seeds of other varieties. Do you find that nematodes are a big issue for passiflora? I had never had to deal with them as a major pest until moving to FL. It will be a while before I can build up the soil enough to hopefully improve the issue. Any veg plants in the ground... forget it! Roots so knotted it's unreal. Is Frederick true from seed?

Tony would know for sure, but I'm pretty positive that Fredericks is a hybrid that is not true from seed. (Ah, I see now that he beat me to the punch, Mr. Passiflora Maniac). My understanding is that it is normally grafted. It is a great plant -- mine is very vigorous and makes great fruit.

Hi Migael,
I found this picture very inspiring, so much so that I looked it up at:
Can Queen Emma Crinum Take Shade? | eHow.com (http://www.ehow.com/facts_7834591_can-queen-emma-crinum-shade.html)
Here is what is funny (quote from the above URL):
"Light
Placing the Queen Emma Crinum Lily in slightly shaded conditions, especially in the heat of
the day, is fine. Planting the Queen Emma in mostly shady conditions causes a long leggy plant
with few blooms, if any. Shade also causes the foliage to fade and look unhealthy. Not providing
the optimum light conditions for this plant will not only result in an ugly plant, but will eventually
weaken it and promote disease.
The funny part is, that you photo shows it growing indoors, obviously in some considerable
shade and it looks anything but "leggy" or "ugly".
Now you have caused me a problem: I have to try and find one up here in Canada to add to my
"tropical planter" :( :)
Thanks for the pic.,
Olaf

February through March and you guys have no worry of frost?? I know you're closer to the equator and all, but, wow. . .
Consider how most of the winter storms in the continental US begin in the north Pacific Ocean and often in the bay of Alaska, then proceed somewhat diagonally across the US - sometimes ending up in Florida or The Gulf. (Yes, this time of year many also go horizontal across the Midwest.) Notice that these storms have little or no effect on populated areas (lower elevation) of southern California, and yet San Diego is at the same latitude as Mason Georgia! So latitude is not the only factor.
Now consider just how far north southern California is from the equator: Quito Ecuador is about on the equator and quite a long distance from San Diego. But - the distance from Quito to the southern tip of South America is the same as the distance from Quito to Anchorage Alaska.

Nick, is that the actual color of the native soil, or have you amended? That's some dark, rich looking stuff!
That's the way it is naturally. In my backyard it is 28% organic matter. On my current farm it's a little sandier. My old farm was about 35% organic matter mixed with montmorillonite(sp?) clay.
That's the rich part of the yard. Closer to the house it gets sandy, and in other areas it is marl.

Cobra Lily - I had totally forgot that I had this plant....I bought a couple of bulbs about 3 years ago but they never did anything where I originally planted so I forgot about them. Earlier this year I "found" them again and moved them by my dragon's claw arum (which will not be blooming for another couple of months) and apparently the cobra likes it's new home :)

Fruit ripening outdoors in the shade. Hua Moa cooking banana, Glenn mangos, first hand of Goldfinger, a few Williams and Lychees I think are Mauritius. Note the larger leechee at top of tray, it's a Sweetheart - bigger with smaller seed but no bite to the taste - which I like.

My photo is of a Malay Rose Apple. They grow very fast so if you want some seeds, let me know.

Not in my garden but in one of my greenhouses.....
Crinum Lily aka poison bulb
If anyone can identify the type I would be most greatful. I found the seed in Oahu in 2007. When it started growing no one here could identify it because it was "exotic". It was only when it flowered for the first time 2 years ago that I was able to give it a name. Now the problem is determining which type of crinum it actually is.
Thanks!

And in case you're wondering, it's about 5ft tall....

When we look for beauty in our gardens, we mostly look at flowers, but it is also to be
found elsewhere:

Hi Hazel,
how did you get this bougainvillae to grow this compact? Is it a specific cultivar or did you
trim it that way?
