While this hasn't bloomed yet this year, I want to tell you about Salvia coccinea 'Coral Nymph'. I bought a plant of this about 4 years ago. It was in a planter and was a beautiful plant. The following year I had volunteers of this come up in another planter (both on the same patio), and in a flower bed 20 yards away!! For the last 2 years it comes up in my patio literally; it grows from an expansion crack. Now it's coming up again! This plant is supposed to be rated zone 8 as a perennial, but as far as I'm concerned it's one tough little focker!

I'll post a pic when it flowers.
Here it is in the patio yesterday.

My Musa Basjoo mama with 5 of her pups. The sixth one, it was then #3, I severed off last fall and “grew”
it in a pot inside. It did not a whole lot of growing there, but it survived and now shares a pot with a canna.
To the right is a scarlet carpet rose climbing up my Dizzy Prune. That is supposed to be a ground cover
rose not growing higher than 2’. It is now >5’.
In the pink pot at the bottom left grows still very slowly, even though it is reasonable warm now, my Costus.
I believe that it is suffering from the dry air here.

Another view of the same. There are actually two roses of the same cultivar in this picture, the one
in the right is the younger one

couple more. Salty if you are asking if I know the varietiy, I do not. I need to do some cutting on it to get it back down to a manageable size. It is currently 7'+ tall. ( hint, hint, if anyone is looking for plumeria cuttings, buy or trade, pm me)

Its hard for me to to pick a favorite plumeria, but for the northern grower, it doesnt get better than Plumeria "Divine". Its the only plumeria to bloom reliably every single summer. I have 5 flower heads this year, and one of them is in full bloom now! The fragrance is nice. Another plus is that it stays very small. Mine is only about 2.5 feet tall, but it has already flowered 5 times. They are great potted plants.
<a href="http://s705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/?action=view&current=IMG_5962.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i705.photobucket.com/albums/ww59/tropicalzone7/Yard%202011/IMG_5962.jpg" border="0" alt="7.25.11"></a>
Most of the crapes are in bloom here, but my Crape Myrtle "Zuni" hasnt started its blooms yet. Im finally seeing buds on it though so I will post pics of that in about 2 weeks when its in full bloom!

They grow like crazy here! Actually, probably one of the easiest and largest yuccas here (never any snow damage). I have seen some the size of the 2 story houses they are next to. I had one a long time ago in a planter that NEVER drained water because we used the wrong type of sand (to give you an idea of how much water was in the planter, the birds used to use it as a bird bath! The yucca eventually couldnt handle a life as a bog plant so it did die 3 years later, but for a plant that needs good drainage (and saw the coldest winter of the decade with a low of 1F), it did very well. Im sure they can easily handle temperatures down to at least -5 to -10F. Not sure if it can go below that, but with protection and dry conditions, it should have no problems.
I would say that they are the second most popular yuccas here (right behind Y. recurvifolia and right after y. filamentosa and y. faxoniana). I guess you would need someone in your zone to give you a better idea about how they do in your area, but they handle wet zone 7 winters and reach blooming age with no problems here.
Hope it does well for you!

Thanks Palmtree. While I will get it used to being outside, I will over winter it in the garage along with some Windmill palms that I've bought this year and didn't want to put them in the ground so late in the season.
Have an eye on a different Yucca at a local store here. What do you know about Yucca Filifera? The one here is about 5' tall and $140.00

Ive never seen those here. I think they require a lot more dry weather than we can provide (all the yuccas here have to be very moisture tolerant). One website rates Y. Filifera for zones 8a and up, so they would probably be a challange here.
I did see a Yucca thompsoniana once which looks kind of familiar to Filifera but is a bit more cold tolerant. I only saw thompsoniana once here though so I dont know if its actually all that cold tolerant or not.
sashaeffer
08-04-2011, 07:43 AM
The Filifera I would just have as a container yucca, and keep in garage in winter. I think they are all slow growing enough that I would be long gone before it got to any size that I couldn't handle to move in/out with the seasons. I just know it looks pretty cool.
Now the one I just got and planted I will acclimate to cold temps and plant it outside when it gets bigger..maybe in 3/4 years.

Willow87, that looks like an Angels Trumpet, not a moon flower. Moon flower is typically a vine with large heart-shaped leaves, and is a close relative to the Morning Glory. Also, the moonflower opens up about 4pm and only lasts one day.

Thanks Yug for correcting me. My datura blooms only last one night and die the next day. Is that normal?
Datura stramonium, also called Jimson Weed, is the main one I'm familiar with. I think that is a wild type of Angel's trumpet, also called brugmansia. The blooms on the wild one typically last one day.
I did some searching for common names for Datura stramonium, it turns out that it IS sometimes called Moonflower. So you were correct, sort of, because I think what you have is not D. stramonium, I think it is Datura wrightii (which I don't know much about). It wouldn't surprise me if D. wrightii was also called Moonflower. I've never before heard of D. stramonium called by called that name. The names I'm familiar with are - Datura, Jimson Weed, Devil's Weed, Locoweed, Devil's Cucumber, and Hell's Bells. Moonflower is a new one on me.
The Angel's Trumpet is Datura arborea which is a larger plant with pendulous blooms, and sometimes different colors, too.

My plant is only a foot tall, I thought it would be a taller plant but it doesn't seem to be producing any vertical growth. It does look like Datura wrightii. I got the seeds from another member and it was just labeled datura. Its become one of my favorite flowers, I just wish the blooms lasted longer.

Alex, wow on your ginger. I can't get my gingers to bloom, except for the mioga Dancing crane. Congrats.....grrrrrrr...lol!
On the other hand, my brugs are still blooming away inside, and the house is redolent with their fragrance in the evening. I also have a pot of hyacinths that decided since they're inside and warm it must be spring, so the kitchen smells spring-like!
Thanks! I was really surpirsed to see it bloom because I just got it as a small bulb from Hawaii August 2010 (The bulb was about the size of an Oreo and I got 4 bulbs).
I dug it up about 3 days ago and potted it up to go indoors and Im happy to say thats its still blooming despite having half its roots ripped up. The fragrance is really strong. At night, half the house is filled with a gardenia-like scent!
My brug is fast asleep now. I love the fragrance of them, I cant imagine how good the fragrance must be when its blooming indoors! I had a hyacinth indoors once and the fragrance was unbelievable. It really does smell like spring, and at least it gives some hope that spring will come back soon.

Since the pond behind the house is frozen over, there is not much abloom in the garden, at least not until the
Winter Jasmine starts flowering in late January.
But we do have a very pretty Christmas Cactus indoors and here are the pics:

This cactus now spans a full meter, which unfortunately heralds the end of it, because beyond this the
branches will become too heavy and break off.

My red Thanksgiving Cactus started blooming too! Its smaller than yours though. I have pink, yellow, and salmon color also, but those seem to bloom about a week later than the red.
My butterfly ginger keeps blooming indoors too! I think its probably one of the only plants I have dug out of the ground without complications.
And speaking of digging plants out of the ground, in early October I dug my 6 foot tall papaya out of the ground and it didnt do well at all (losing every leaf). But now it has a new leaf coming out so it looks like it might make a come back! I hope it does!
Thats about it thats going on right now. Going down to 33F tonight so I think the frost tender plants outside will be getting some more damage tomorrow morning.

Chance,
send me a pm (I assume your post is directed at me) with your address. Once I figure out how to get the seeds, I'll send some your way. The plant has a good number of dried flower heads, so there should be seeds inside. If they are like most other marigolds, they should be dark, skinny, and 1/2 inch or less long. I have been meaning to get the seeds and spread them around the other plants, too, so your request will give me a little more motivation to get at it. The seedlings should be easy to spot since their first regular leaves should be just like the pointy ones on a regular marigold.

I still have lots of plants in bloom outside considering its already December! Some annuals are blooming likeMandevillas, the lantanas are doing really well and they are blooming and even making more buds for more blooms, and I think my geraniums are probably blooming the best since they still have lots of growth and blooms!
Despite that crazy October snowstorm, this fall has actually been pretty mild. I usually dont have anything in bloom by December and usually the frost tender plants are melted for the year, but everything is still doing really well. No freezes in the forecast for the next 10 days!

me too. I'm quite surprise my loofah vines are still fruiting and still around in December(maybe its because my backyard has a big lake-heard large mass water helps from freezing); knock on wood. I know Monday its gonna be like 29 degree so maybe I will cover what I can so some of the unmatured loofah can mature; the young vegetable, I use it in noodle soups, and the mature one I am trying to make loofah scrubs, but they are still all green;large and long(2~3 ft) but still hard green-not brown or yellow, so its not quite ready for harvesting into scrubs..need little more time. I have like 20 or more growing-hate to waste them. If all successful and have plenty of seeds, anyone is welcome to have some with a prepaid mail. :giveflowersnana:

Hi Cameron,
I see the the banana, which you have in your avatar occasionally for sale up here in the chilly north and must
therefore conclude, that it is reasonably cold hardy. However there is never any name associated with it.
I am interested in acquiring it, because of the colour of the leaves, but in order to research more about it, I
would have to know its name.
Can you help please?
Thanks,
Olaf

Hi Olaf, its Sumatrana X Gran Nain. Its a hybrid that has Blood banana and Gran Nain as its parents. I got mine from Sandy's online nursery, Northern Tropics. I had to overwinter since it is very sensitive to cold. Unfortunately I lost it and several of my other bananas to the drought and heat.
Olafhenny

Thank you, Cameron, the banana I am seeing here is the only one, which is widely marketed here beside
the Basjoo. Therefore I assume it is a different, fairly hardy, variety with leaf markings similar to yours.
I have once tried to buy a Siam Ruby from the States, but the shipping takes far too long, probably due to
customs delay and by the time it got here, a day short of 3 weeks, it was practically dead and on the way to
re-incarnate as a hyacinth. :)
PS: I just had the "innovative" idea to look Sumatrana X Gran Nain up and found out, that it is a "dwarf",
and therefore possibly considered a house plant here, even though it is supposed to grow to 6 to 8'
tall. Add to that the height of the pot and the reach of an emerging leaf, and it is clearly a 'stretch'
for most homes

I wonder if you are talking about Musa Sikkimensis 'Red Tiger' Its has stripes and is cold hardy. The Blood bananas are very sensitive to cold. I saw several large Siam Ruby bananas at a local nursery last year. Even though it was fall at the time, the nursery was still selling them for full price lol. My Sumatrana X did pretty well indoors, even in the lower light, but it only grew a couple of leaves during the whole winter.

Thank you, Cameron,
I thought I’d ask while I still can find your avatar. After the holidays, we will head for a couple of months to
Vietnam and if I cannot find anything exiting there, then I will embark on a more intensive search after I
come back in March.
We have an elderly lady looking after our house, while we are gone and I cannot foster any more plants
on her, than I already have. :(
Following up on your hints and after some searches, I have come to the conclusion, that here in BC the
best source for retail banana plants is Home Depot. Unfortunately the closest one is a good hour drive
from where I live. So it is not a place on which I can keep on checking.
Best,
Olaf

Oh wow Vietnam? I found my Orinoco at Home Depot, but this year they didn't sell any banana plants. The nurseries sell a few but they are so expensive. Sometimes Lowe's will sell Super dwarf Cavendish or Blood bananas but nothing else. I'm going to try to check out Home Depot next spring to see if they get another shipment of Orinoco bananas. I hope you can find one.

Yeah, I did bring home my Ornata from there. I was relatively new to banana raising and had never heard of a
banana, which is small enough to raise inside to full maturity, and when I saw them in Vietnam, I thought I had
really found something. The story on how I got it home is here:
http://www.bananas.org/f2/i-think-i-scored-coup-13386.html, the continuation here http://www.bananas.org/f311/need-advice-grow-banana-plant-indoors-14608.html#post178248
and some more on it here: http://www.bananas.org/f2/old-corms-14769.html#post181203
I still think, hat I "found something", because I would have a tough time finding one here in Canada and to get
life plants up from the states does have problems of long or costly shipping

Every time I see banana plants in homedepot or lowes, I never see specific name; just banana. I'd walk around the bananas they sell, and its disappointing that they don't even know what type when I ask. So I give up buying bananas at home depot/lowes. I'll stick with online, although I just recently heard that the gov gonna try to impose tax with online purchase; don't know how they'll do that though.
Ya, I like Orinoco too; they do well here in North Texas. I've got couple growing, and hopefully I'll get more from the mom next summer; I don't mind giving if I get plenty more pups next summer.

I hear (read) you, Iz, but up here in western Canada the Home Depot seems to be the best source. The
garden shops also do not identify the species of bananas and from what I read here, they do not do much
better in the States, as there are many complaints about mislabeling on this board.
The solution I can see is to take a camera into the shops and take pictures, post them here and hope,
that somebody will be able to identify them.
If its just typical green banana leaf, it amaze me anyone can pick up and identify their types; is there any other clues? Hardy or not, plaintiff or not, and if anyone is patient enough to wait to bloom. yup, it helps when you see its flower and/or fruit. But then if it where like a plaintiff fruit-say it looks like the plaintiff saba; are there other types of plaintiff that similarly looks like the saba/carbada fruit? Whats next?
If I can ever identify my 1 unknown banana, and 2 of my mix labeled banana from the uncertain wait, it will be exciting to know anyway.
Olafhenny
12-04-2011, 03:04 PM
There are lots of markers, by which experts here on the board can identify the variety of a banana. Shape and
colouration of the leaf, shape of the petiole wing, as well as length and colour of the petiole. All of these are
present and recognizable once the third or fourth leaf has formed. And not all of the leaves are “just typically
green”. :)

Iz I'm in North Texas too. I love all of the rain we are getting here, but it was a little too late lol .My Orinoco that I got a few years ago was mislabeled Dwarf Cavendish, and then someone on here gave me the correct ID. I would like to try Ornata out one day.

Willow87: Ornata banana..hmm are they edible?
No, they are not, certainly not up here in the frigid north. As the name indicates, they are strictly
ornamental and due to their small size they can function as a houseplant. Since no banana can get
fruit ripened during our short growing season, the value of bananas is exclusively in the foliage for us.
I understand, though, that the Ornatas have a very long flowering season. That seems confirmed by my
observation in that park in Vietnam, that almost all Ornatas there were in bloom and they did not look
transplanted from elsewhere for display purposes. If that bloom extends for them also, while they are
inside, is something I may know in a year or so.

Right now I have my Stromanthe "Triostar" about to bloom for the first time ever, and I have some Confederate Jasmine indoros that is covered in Blooms. The fragrance on the Jasmine is amazing at night, its now one of my favorite indoor plants. I'm hoping that it blooms again when I take it outside in the spring. My orchid's flowers have stayed on the plant for about 2 months now. I didnt know the individual flowers lasted that long! And I have some peace lilies blooming indoors as well. They usually have a flush of blooms sometime in late winter indoors and then have another flush of blooms when I take them outside in the spring.
Also I still have some paperwhites blooming outside (they got a little crushed from the 3 inches of snow that we had this past weekend, but the snow melted away fast so they werent too badly damaged). The paperwhites are the only things blooming outside right now.

This is about 5 1/2 ft tall. Blooms throughout the year, and flowers are typically in groups of 4 or 8.

I hope your lemon will yeild some fruit and not drop them all. I'm hoping the same thing for my blood orange which is literally covered with bloom. Never have seen such a profusion of bloom. I just ate the last of my satsuma and now it's starting to bloom again; in fact, all the citrus is starting to bloom or bud. I've also got some young figs that I just noticed today. Seems like I blinked and everything started to bloom. The azeleas are a riot this year.

So far, so good. When there are many little fruits starting, I will snip off all but three, and let them mature. I read that too many will weigh down the branch, and over-tax the plants energy. Vanilla beans are similar in that you have to limit the beans maturing in any one place on the vine. Don't you just love the smell of any type of citrus when it blooms?

mskitty, you're welcome!
Here's one of my most beautiful flowering nectarine. Aside from fantastic fruits, the flowers are enchanting. Sometimes I just stare at them for hours doing nothing. Arctic Glo White Nectarine. This bloom is more than 15 days old. The blooms opened in March 1, and it still looked good yesterday. Very showy, big and long lasting flowers. There are other flowers of other peaches nectarines that are double and very showy. I might get those next year for double purpose duty, ornamental and fruit production. We can have both worlds too.

Thank you, Tony, I can now tentatively rename my developing cannas from "Unknown Canna"
to "Canna Australia". Tentatively, because I have seen mine so far only from a distance in the
neighbour's yard. I will have to wait until my off-springs show 2 or 3 mature leaves to be more
certain, maybe even until they bloom.
Thanks again,

I posted a week or so ago some pictures of this plant in a different thread in this forum asking for help
in ID-ing it, but had no luck so far. Well it is blooming in my garden today, so I am repeating here,
what I posted in that other thread today also, - in the hope that this would expose it to more plant
lovers.
I sure would like to learn more about a plant, which established itself in almost total shade one
spring as a seedling, grew to more than 5 feet in height during summer and fall and is now just 12
months later breaking out in a profusion of flowers. Most of all I would like to know about their
hardiness and how to propagate them, because I could sure use more of these shade
thriving beauties.

This is my first year of growing cape gooseberry, Physallis peruviana. I've had a tough time with a potato beetle attacking them even though I've never noticed this pest previously. It seems to be a magnet for the insect. This is not my photo but I believe it's the same insect: Three-Lined Potato Beetle, Lema daturaphila 2 | Flickr - Photo Sharing! (http://www.flickr.com/photos/nikonian72/5968515605/) Pyrethrin kills them but more come after those are gone.
Today I noticed a my first flowers opening on two of my 16 plants:

I think that is the 'Parrot's Beak' heliconia. The 'Lobster Claw' is generally an orange shade (like a cooked lobster), with a dark green to black edge, and no yellow. Another difference, 'Parrot's Beak' hangs down, 'Lobster Claw' grows upward. Still nice pics, though.
(yeah, I know if you 'google' it, it shows the 'Parrots Beak' even when you look for 'Lobster Claw', that doesn't mean it's right)

I found pomegranate flower buds today. I planted this pomegranate from seed in December 2010. I've been so preoccupied with bananas that I just threw some water in the pomegranate from time to time and ignored it. I certainly didn't expect it to be flowering so soon. I hope that it produces tasty fruit because who knows what a seed-grown plant will produce.
