Heracleum lanatum( cow parsnip), I found this in a roaside ditch last year on Chappaquiddick island. It never got above a foot or so tall last year here in Jersey but this year got to about 4' or so and is now in bloom.

This is the year I've been waiting for... the year for BLOOMS!
My 2 Paw Paws both have blossoms after growing for 7 years. First time I will taste Paw Paw.
First time for a nana bloom (Ice Cream)... waiting 4 years.
Pineapple Guava has a ton of blossoms (grown from seed over 3 yrs ago).
Foxglove planted from seed in '08 has 1st buds forming (they're so pretty!)
Giant Iris & peonies are ready to pop.
Cherimoya & Loquat are of blooming age but still waiting.
Oh, and how could I forget the 5 in one apple tree I bought for Mike! I grafted 2 more varieties to it last year & they took, but the Anna & Golden Dorset both blossomed & have baby apples on! It has to cross pollinate w/ another variety. I planted it in Spring '08.

It never hurts to ask, LOL. Btw, I was highly (to say the least) impressed with your banana plant, in the "Main Banana Discussions" thread, with the flag leaf. I definitely look forward to photos of that particular flower.

Black eyed susans are starting to bloom, lupines still blooming - all summer, marigolds are blooming, pink coneflower - I'm going to take the seeds & see if I can get more growing, dark purple clematis, honeysuckle

That means all of the summer flowers will be blooming soon
White daisies, hibiscus, liatrias, phlox - 3' tall, bachelor buttons, snowball, lilies, hollyhock, bellflower, balloon flower, kniphofia, rudbeckia, hydrangea, goblin blanket, vandy tuft, monarda - already saw a hummingbird flying around, plus a lot more
And the Rose of Sharons will start blooming too, dozens of them

Sunflowers have a long way to go, same w/butterfly bushes
I have so many flowers growing I no longer even remember what they all are

They call them Easter lilies only because they're forced bulbs, made to bloom indoors at Easter time.

Now for something completely different. I had bought a very young Alocasia odora a while ago. All you could see was a hint of green coming up from the soil. I planted it behind the waterfall in a shady part of the garden that only gets morning sun. As it grew I realized it was definitely not an Alocasia, but it looked more like a canna or a heliconia. Today I have my answer, I found these gorgeous blooms on my heliconia. My guess is heliconia psittacorum, variety ?? Chime in if you have a clue. To me it looks like a yellow heliconia psittacorum Andromeda.

Hi, Migael,

I agree with Saltydad. From the picture you posted, the flowering plant looks like Mexican petunia. In Georgia, it is a very popular landscaping plant except that only purple-colored Mexican petunia is being sold here. I have never seen the white ones, which is also another pretty color.

Half of the Mexican petunias I grow did not come back this year because of deer problem. But like you said, they can be invasive, and they are easy to root from cuttings. I personally thought it is a great plant for a beginner gardener like me. They are easy to take care of and produced flowers easily.

The pink mallow is a different species. Ours is Hibiscus coccineus
Common Names: scarlet hibiscus, scarlet rose mallow
Family: Malvaceae (mallow Family)
Description
The scarlet hibiscus is a slender shrubby herbaceous perennial that dies back in winter and re-sprouts in spring. Established plants can have one to several stems up to 7 ft (2.1 m) tall. The five petaled flowers are brilliant crimson red and 6-8 in (2.4-3.2 cm)across. Each lasts only a day but new ones continue to open all summer and fall. The leaves are divided palmately (like the fingers on a hand) into 3-7 narrow, pointed, serrated lobes.

Location
The scarlet hibiscus occurs naturally in swamps, marshes and ditches, from southern Georgia and Alabama to central Florida. It is often encountered along southern rivers and streams where it towers above the maidencane and pickerelweed (Pontederia cordata). My information doesn't mention being in Texas. Maybe the Texas species is an other species. But it sure looks like Hibiscus coccineus

Culture
Light: Does best in full sun.
Moisture: Likes a moist soil and can tolerate flooding. Established plants will survive in normal soils without supplementary watering, but they need to be watered during dry spells if you want them to flower.
Hardiness: USDA Zones 7 - 11
Propagation: By seeds or root division. Seeds should be punctured with a needle or scraped with a file before planting.

The spectacular scarlet hibiscus flower color coordinates pleasingly with red tinged stems and leaves.

Usage
The scarlet hibiscus makes an eye-catching specimen in the landscape with its huge crimson flowers and handsome palmate leaves. Plant them next to a pond or water garden, or at the back of a bed where their elegant leaves and brilliant flowers will attract the eye.

Wow Jeff...

Your friend's garden sure has some cool plants. Thanks for sharing.

That is absolutely beautiful, Sherry. Does it stay pink? I have a white lacecap that starts about beautifully white, that begins to have shades of pink, still beautiful.

Thanks, Howard! I guess we'll find out if it stays pink because this is the first bloom, but so far so good. Here's another shot I took of it today...

It took all summer but I finally have a bloom on my bougainvillea!! Its only one bloom but Ive never been happier about it! It gets a pretty good amount of sun, but I have learned for next year to give it all day sun, all summer long since it seems like its one sun hungry plant! Ill post a pic soon!

BTW, while up in Williamstown, Mass for an aunt's 90th BD party this past weekend, I accidentally dunked my digital camera in a hot tub as I maneuvered to help Mom out (I wasn't in the tub). I had my camera, my cell, and my wallet in my cargo shorts. Thanks to Verizon and LG the cell is fine after I wiped it off and dried it in the sun. The Sony camera, however, has moisture inside and won't turn on or off. I will try to recover what was on my card, but I think I only had 1 pic. In any case, this is a long-winded way of saying there won't be any more pic updates for a while. The budget doesn't allow for another camera, so I'll use my phone and it's crappy quality.

I don't know the name of your flower, but it's pretty, Saltydad. Great job!

Sorry to hear about your sony digital camera. Hope you get a replacement digital camera soon. But it's amazing that your cell phone still function. Ours didn't work after it fell into the water, and most others don't, either, is what I have heard so far.

Happy growing!

Thanks!! I know pudica is definitely becoming very common in Florida now probably because they are such nice evergreen shrubs that stay in bloom almost all year! Wish they could stay outside all year long here, but Im very happy I could see the spectacular blooms!!!

Even though they look pale yellow today, the blooms become very light from the sun, over time. I'll show again later in September when the bush is completely loaded with carnation-like flowers.

It's one of my most favorite flowers of all. Even the leaves are glorious...

Greg- Indeed you have a bloom developing. Has it opened yet? Post a shot or two when it does. I wish we could also smell the delightful fragrance. My 'old' plummie is just now developing it's first blooms of the season. Last year it didn't bloom at all, so I'm relieved. I wish some of my cuttings would bloom so I could finally see the blooms!
Vickie- Can't wait to see the blooms!
Sherry- For some reason I've never really appreciated marigolds except as veggie garden fillers to keep away the bugs. But you have some of the prettiest. Keep 'em coming.

I'm quite bummed out that my Empress lotus did not bloom this year. I think it's because I left it in shallow water all winter inside of dropping it in the deep as I usually do. Last year was the first year it bloomed, and only one, but it was beautiful, as are those above. I fed it every month, but bupkis except for great leaves. Oh well, there's always next year.

I know the ones you're thinking of, Howard...those hideous orange ones! :ha: Even those yellow ones can be...common.

I'll send ya some seeds for these, when I mail your beautyberry shrubs. You will not be disappointed. They are # 1, in my books. Also heard them referred to as hybrid "snow" or "snowman" marigolds.

Thank you for the compliments. I will show more shots later, for sure...

Apparently the cypress vine is terribly invasive. One comment on Dave's Garden was that it's worse than nutgrass. As pretty as it is, I'll have to pass. I already have enough passionflowers growing in my yard, and tetrapanax growing in every bed.

BTW, one comment was from someone living in a place that must have the worst location name I've ever seen- Toadsuck, Texas!!!!

Click here (http://www.sunriseseeds.com/Cypress%20Vine%20.0.html) for Cypress vine info.

The ones in the video are seeds that I threw down in the spring. They do grow verry fast, and the flowers are wonderful. After a summer of growing they have a touboris rootsystem and come back from tubors + seeds. I dont even put mulch down during the winter and they still come back. If you want some seeds I can send them to ya, I dont have any seeds yet tho...

BTW, how did you put in the labels on the vid?
go to my videos; click edit; click on the annotations tab; click when/ where you want one/ what shape/color and then type in what ya want.
