Yes, they are all so lovely, aren't they? I just love this thread. The pictures are very cheering.
Oh yes, Blake, I would enjoy sending you a cutting, because they root easily, and then you'll have your own perennial shrub that will return for you every year!
Don't be afraid to remind me come Spring, ok? I will send you two or three cuttings, so you'll have a good chance of success. I still have your address...

Verry pretty HBL! this reminds me... A friend asked me a few days ago "can I grow tomatoes over the winter?". I said you need extra light, etc.
But can you grow a tomato plant that makes alot of produce over the winter without aney extra light? I might grow some over the winter to see what they do.
:)

10-18-2009, 07:09 PM
Yes, one variety that performs exceptionally well over Winter, without supplemental lighting is, "Patio" tomato.
I've grown it many Winters in my south facing window, and it even produced a fair size crop of delicious red beauties, comparable to Summer.

Thanksgiving cactus is almost ready to bloom (about 2 weeks) and is enjoying some cool weather on a porch. The cannas were flowering, but I cut them down (We havent gotten any frosts yet, but Ive got to start cleaning things up now for next year!). The elephant ears arent cut down yet (its too big to cut now so ill wait until a frost flattens it). They are flowering and have had 7-9 large while flowers (same shape as a peace lily)
Indoor plants flowering are my mandevillea (never wants to stop), hibiscus (with lots of seed pods now too), parlor palm (usually likes to bloom for the winter, but I guess it got a head start this year, Improved meyer lemon (20 fruits on it, and probably 20 or more buds all opening now, smells great too!). My plumerias are indoors and still blooming great.
Nice pics everyone! (Sorry I dont have any to offer right now).

Pomegranate trees require pollination to produce fruits. Make sure it is in a spot where there is a lot of insect activity.
I once grew a dwarf pomegranate inside last Winter, and I had to hand-pollinate the blooms with a soft paintbrush. Here is it (crappy webcam shots), but in the end I harvested several ripe fruits...

Dwarf Cavendish bananas, spaghetti squash, Jarradhale pumpkin, red warty thing squash, blue ballet squash, rutgers tomatoes, blackberries, pomegranets, cowpeas, bell peppers, strawberries and container trees of grapefruit, orange, lemon, lime, tangerine, apples, peaches and nectarines. And don't let me forget the grapes and kiwis.
This is small compared to the spring growing season. I have a back yard that's almost a quarter acre. By the time summer hits, it's a matter of "where do I put this?" and "I like that. I'll find a space for it." Somehow, I manage to find an inch or two to grow stuff. I have a ball doing it.
I couldn't tell you if it's theraputic or obsessive, but who cares? I have fun and enjoy it. No one complains when I hand out sacks of fresh veggies and fruits. :0517:

oh, hey! That's real sweet of you. I'm not familiar with the California stance on sending seeds by mail. Maybe some members here from CA will chime in.
I'd love to try my hand at plant seed; I've never started a plant from seed--best I've done for far is keep from sending my plants to the big nursery in the sky, hence my signature "reformed gardner".

Nothing too exciting here, but there are a few things in boom. The thanksgiving and christmas cactus are both all bloomed out now, so I wont bother posting those photos in the thread since they were gone about a week ago.
First up, a few photos of one of my many Chamaedorea Elegans, however the first one I have gotten to bloom.
Closeup:
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=28058&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=28058)
against white background:

Whole Palm:
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=28059&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=28059)
This is the second largest Chamaedorea Elegans I have, leaf tip is about 15" or so. The largest has 7 leaves, and is about 20-22" at its tallest leaf tip, and is starting to show the classic ringed trunk.
A couple African Violet blooms...
This first one the bloom is a good bit darker than the photo. Iphones do not have the greatest cameras.
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=28056&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=28056)
This second bloom is a good bit darker too. Gotta love the bargain bin for plants that are not "in bloom"! $1.00 a piece!
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=28056&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=28056)
This next and last one for this post, is one of my favorite plants. Jatropha Podagrica. Common Name "Buddah Belly". As you can see it is a caudiciform plant/ tree. I have had this for almost 4 years now, and it has grown to nearly 3 feet tall, from a mere 10". Oddly enough, I got this plant, at of all places, IKEA!!! LOL!
It blooms year round, however is deciduous and does lose most or all of its leaves during late fall/ winter, but continues to bloom. Depending on how much light it gets the leaves are anywhere from 5-8" across, to large dinner plate size. It is monoecious, so you can get seeds from just one plant. Each bloom spike has male and female flowers and can be hand pollinated or, if left out for the summer, insects, usually bees will do it for you. Anyway, here are the current blooms:

Closer up:

This plant is been with me for a few years now…first cone though !
Zamia Furfuracea
This member of the Zamiaceae family was described by Carl Linnaeus Jr. in 1789. It is found in Mexico, growing in a well drained soil with some water and some sun. The stem can grow to 25 centimetres in diameter, the leaves will get 180 centimetres long. It can only be reproduced by seeds from the brown cones of the female plant
Culture
Plant cardboard palm in neutral, well drained sandy soil. Mulch with organic materials (bark or leaf mold).
Light: Bright sun to partial shade.
Moisture: Water when dry. Drought tolerant.
Hardiness:USDA Zones 9 - 11. Sustains leaf damage at 28ºF (-2.2ºC)
Propagation: Propagate by seed.

My indoor hyacinths are booming, but not well though. What surprise me are the two yellow crocus flowers in the front yard because the bulbs are tiny. I just figured out the name of the pink and white one. Its called Herme camellia. Its rated for a zone 7 and has never had any problems in my zone 7 with no protection at all. I am not sure of the name of the red one unfortunately.

Bob, a citrus tree will only set as much fruit as it thinks it can support, so it is normal that 98% of all citrus flowers drop without setting fruit. There are 2 factors that can help your tree in setting fruit-- fertilizer and water--especially during the time just before bloom until mid June. A foliar spray of 1 to 2% Potassium Nitrate along with a good slow release fertilizer about a month before bloom will provide the nutrients the tree needs to set fruit. As for watering, do not let the tree dry too much, but you have to be careful about overwatering as well. If you have a good fast draining media with lots of air spaces, overwatering will not be a problem, but if your soil has lots of peat moss, it can be difficult to maintain the right amount of water.

One of my very young mango seedlings (3 years old) is blooming! It suffered no damage in the freezes, while some of the other trees (also in pots) near it received leaf and twig damage. I raise them under disease pressure which is another means of culling the ones that don't make the grade.

I love the 4 seasons up in New England
But the gardener in me really wishes we were further South
Tulips, small grape hyacinth & daffodils are still blooming
Star of David buds are starting to break thru & should bloom shortly
Some of the Lupines are pretty big so I may get some early flowers this year
And of course the invasion of the black eyed susans' is under way
Each year I weed out thousands of seedlings
This year looks like a bumper crop

I have had two for about 35 years. They are 6 to 8 feet tall and very slow growers. They are not flowering right now. But it's relative is in full bloom. uaiacum officinale is one of the species yielding the true lignum vitae. All species in this genus Guaiacum are CITES-listed. The other species of true Lignum Vitae is Guaiacum sanctum.

This is Guaiacum sanctum and I like it the best. It's younger and is a better bloomer. Both species have a lot of seed. But I was first before it grows it must go through a bird. I have never seen a seedling under my trees. I have been told that special trees will germinate under the tree.

Thank you Jnstropic!!
I purchased mine from Florida keys Native Nursery. None of the seeds from last year have germinated. But I think I can develop a low mole acidic solution that imitates an avian digestive track. Actual bird poop may help!
I grow it because it is Native and its endangered, so I will help the species survive!
Thank you for your insight! :2239:

Growing from seeds from a fellow gardener in Venezuela :
Calabaza (or Calabasa) is an old Spanish term that can be applied to a variety of gourds and melons. It is derived from the Persian term for melon (kharbuz). The French term "calabase", and hence "calabash" is based on the older Spanish. In common use the French term "calabash" refers to a gourd native to the African continent, while "calabaza" refers to a gourd native to the Americas. In North America, the word "calabaza" refers to any of several species of tropical gourds of the genus Cucurbita. Two common species native to the Caribbean are C. moschata and C. maxima. The widespread species C. foetidissima specifically identifies "calabaza" as one of its common names. The Spanish "calabacera frasco" [literal translation; bottle-shaped gourd] refers specifically to C. foetidissima. Local names for "large green or yellow gourds" include "auyama" (Venezuela), "ayote" (Central America), "abóbora" (Brazil), and "zapallo" much of South America.

We have a native Rhipsalis in Florida, but I've never seen this one. Do you know where it comes from? Also If I may ask, where did you get it? I might wish to purchase one.

I bought this plant in June 2008 at Ong Nursery in San Diego for $95. It was $95 so it was a pricey gamble but it has handled winters fine. I put shade cloth over it when the summer gets intense (pretty soon) and keep it on over the winter. We got down to about 28F two winters ago and 25F this past winter. It started out a little over 4' tall and is now about 5.5 feet tall but has also got much wider/fuller.

Azeala's - mine are on the North side of the house
So they bloom after everyon else's usually
And after the springbulbs are mostly gone
The new blue siding really makes them stand out I think
The only thing that bugs me is the white should be in the middle
With a red one on either side

I'm excited that after 7 years, both of my Paw Paws have buds blooming! They are not self fertile so I will take pollen off one tree when it is going thru the male stage, & then pollinate the blossoms on other tree when those are going thru the female stage. Bees won't do it on Paw Paws. I can't wait to taste my first fruit ever.

Congrats, Patty. What is a Paw Paw? When I surfed on the web, most web sites say Paw Paw is like a payaya but with yellow flesh and a different taste. One web site says American pawpaw (note the difference in spelling) is known as "poor man's banana". Which one do you grow and what does the fruit taste like?

Hi Rae, thanks. They are same - just spelled diff. S'posedly, they taste like banana -apple custard. Best when chilled & eaten out of the soft skin. It was George Washingtons fav desert. I have 2 other varieties just grafted on so I'll have to do a taste test maybe next year. Do you remember the little song:
Pickin up paw paws, put'em in your pocket
Pickin up paw paws put'em in your pocket
Pickin up paw paws, put'em in your pocket
Way down yonder in the paw paw patch
It's something I can keep inground here over winter. They do need chill hours but some varieties grow good in the south.
They are sorta hard to grow at first...first 3 years they need mostly shade & they grow very slooooow so best to grow in pots then cuz they don't like transplant. They have tropical looking leaves - kinda like cherimoya. When I see fruits & the leaves get bigger, I'm sure I'll get some pics.
Harvey, I hope you get some lychees this year.

Hello, Patty,
Thank you for helping me understand the paw paw so well; both of your postings are extremely informational. I just visited youtube and listened to the song. It is cute. I do know the tune of the song but not the lyrics since I did not grow up in the states.
Please do post some pictures and let us know how your paw paw trees are doing. I'm sure the fruit is worth the 7 years' wait (I'm hoping the same for my pomergrante tree; after 5 years, I'm still waiting for it to flower.) Maybe I can try putting down more used coffee grounds and see whether I can speed up the flowering process.
Best of wishes to your paw paw!!!
