Tog, those are absolutely stunning! I'd say ship me the Hybrid #1 (:nanadrink:), but doubt that it would stand up to my zone 7 winters. Actually, this is the only euphorbia I currently have. I like it so much that I intend to start exploring the family further.

I have a blooming one too! It smells very delicious. But Im afraid that it might not set fruit; An overwhelming amount of the immature fruit are dropping. :(
Also Banana shrub - smells like apples and bananas, very heavenly around sunset when the fragrance intensifies....

I was hoping that my Michelia Figo could be planted outside here in Zone 8-9, but they are struggling to survive. I had 4 plants 2 years ago, but one did not grow back in the Spring last year. Two of the surving plants bloomed last summer, but the third barely sprouted leaves. I'm afraid that third one my be gone, too. It's not showing any signs of sprouting.
Waiting for Michelia x alba buds to fatten up and this 'First Love' Gardenia to open up more but it smells really good even at this stage....they are really taking forever because the weather here is like very sunny for a week, and then the next week its cold and hazy. :0493:
http://i42.tinypic.com/im8as3.jpg
Where are you located? I've sent some Michelia Champaka var. 'Alba' to several members here in FL and other places in the south, and they have not gotten any flowers from them. Mine blooms easily here in Seattle, and even survived in a cold greenhouse in the winter. Some were continuing to bloom throughout the winter, too!

Figo should be hardy to zone 8, no? Mine's is in a wide 3 gallon pot about 3 feet tall, maybe rootbound but I'm afraid to repot it. This is one of the plants I have that makes me nervous, because it seems so sensitive to watering, sunlight, fertilizer etc. What you don't see is that nearly all of the leaves and like 30 flower buds dropped off already, but its still producing more buds. I hope the new figo hybrids from Australia are easier to grow when they become more readily available.
I'm in Ontario, Calif which is zone 9a I think... or at least zone 8b. I have the alba outside in a pot too in the shade. Another problem here is that the Santa Ana winds really keep the wind chill up especially at night and the humidity low. But I think one of the flowers will open up this weekend.
By Michelia champaca var 'Alba' do you mean a white version of M champaca? Because this would be different from the non-fuzzy M. x alba (a hybrid cross of M. champaca and M. montana) which is more commonly grown in the US. I think you mean the latter, but I do read of them blooming at different times of the year for different people. I am really amazed at how yours bloom in such a situation. You need to tell me how you do it. :bananas_b
They go semi-dormant outdoors here during winter and I guess most of us down south don't bother keeping them sheltered. But I've seen rooted cuttings or grafts bloom readily even at less then one foot.

I don't normally post in this forum but after waiting 4+yrs for my Brassavola perinii X Self to bloom, I had to do it!
I got this plant as a 3 bulb cutting from the US and it took quite a while for it to establish to the climate here. It is now growing as an ephiphyte on my big Cycas clivicola.

My 'Sweetheart' lychee started to bloom a couple of days ago. I planted it in June 2008 and it is about 5 feet tall. It had some minor frost damage this past winter but is doing pretty well.
Many of my pomegranates are also blooming as are prickly pear cactus. Some of my larger potted avocados are also finishing up blooming.

Took some pics today
Out of the last 16 days it has rained 11 days
So everything is greening up
Not sure why I fertilized the lawn, needs to be cut again
Fall bulbs are finished, perennials have started to bloom
I also planted 32 trees between 6" - 3' that all seem to be doing OK
Front garden was the only garden that existed when we bought the house
Now there are gardens everywhere
I haven't really touched the front, except to put in the new red edging
I also added the tall Rose of Sharon past the 2nd red azeala
I have been tempted to dig up the red & swap places with the white
But I don't want to chance killing them
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y105/Daveywb/Plants/Azealas.jpg
Lupines are coming up everywhere, pink, purple & blue/white
This is the earliest they have ever bloomed

Other than the dwarf Pom's, I've not had good luck growing Pom's in a pot.
I have a 'Wonderful' that I've tried to be successful with for 2 years...no go...just green stuff...
Mine older ones LOVE to be neglected on the scorching side of the house, LOL!

06-24-2009, 08:37 AM
That's right, Bob - just sun through the windows. Yes, they are all growing inside. Some of them will go outside, and some will continue to stay in.
I also have a 400 W metal halide HID system for the colder winter months.
Thanks.
: )
You're hardcore alright. I don't know if it's practical for you or not. If you don't have a "mover " for your lighting look in to one. Mine is a 6'( can be extended) metal strip that moves the light end to end every 20 minutes. You can almost quadruple the amount of plants growing under it. I'm not suggesting it looks like you need more though!:ha::ha::ha:
The Hollyberry Lady
06-24-2009, 08:57 AM
Neat suggestion, Bob, but I don't think I have the room to move the light anywhere. I live in a one bedroom apartment, and the fixture is stationary in a corner of my bedroom. I am able to grow tons of stuff under it over the winter, including strawberries!
I get many plants under it - you'd be surprised. I've had the lamp for over 3 years, and it is just terrific. I use a warm deluxe SunMaster full spectrum bulb, that is just amazing. I just keep shifting the plants around, instead of the lamp.
Great suggestion though, for someone with more room.

Am going to cross-pollenate with a like yellow & a double red I have,(below :) )
Have taped/marked the stems of the yellow/yellow pollenated combos & will start the yellow/double red here next week.
Doubtful of the outcome on the double red(was told it was tropical)...but I dunno - so here goes nothing!

Definitely perennial for me here in zone 7, and I have them in a section of the yard that gets sun until around 3 PM. They are beautiful, aren't they? I'm a sucker for all kinds of lilies. Unfortunately, so are the rabbits. :-(
They are in a bed that has turned 'orange'. Blooming now are the remnants of orange hot pokers, tiger lilies, double tiger lilies, orange crocosmia and the blackberry lily. I'll see if I can get a pic to post. BTW, yours are gorgeous!

I don't know what color mine will be. Someone gave me the seeds in a trade from another forum. A whole lot of them. The seeds are very ornamental on the plants too, and look like blackberries. Do you collect seed from your plants?
Great to hear they are perennial. I was told they would be here also, but wanted a second opinion. I just love the leaves. I'll be sure to post pics of my blooms next year...

NEED SOME HELP
Here are 3 different hardy hibiscus plants blooming today in my yard. All are 'red', although A and C have more 'fuchsia'. None has an ID. Note the different petal arrangement. Flowers A and C both have petals that tend to be separately displayed, while B tends to have overlapping petals. The distinguishing characteristic is the color of the stigma....yellow in C, red in A. Can anyone help me in ID'ing these hardy hibiscus? C reminds me of Texas Star, but it has a huge flower, up to a foot wide. I appreciate any help here. Yes, definitely a a mislabled one. From what I've noticed online, many people do receive the wrong lotus through mail order. Quite understandable due to the nature of this plant. The tubers get mixed up easily.

It will freeze to the ground in the winter. In zone 9 Central Florida they would sometimes be killed outright by the cold. It gets colder in Houston. Create an outdoor green house on the south side and it will do better. I think you already know this. Best wishes!!! :2239:

Yes, I actually do eat all of the hot peppers I grow! Great the lemon balm tea was a success - I've been drinking it for years now.
Oh you want a recipe for the hot peppers, do you? Well here it is...
INGREDIENTS:
~ pair of scissors
~ 1-2 hot peppers of any variety
~ one plate of hot food
METHOD:
Take the 1-2 chili peppers and using the scissors, cut small rings into one plate of hot food. Enjoy!
Simple like the lemon balm tea - but how I enjoy them best.

Anything you want to add spice and heat to, is how I use them. On just about everything, basically. No, I do take nights off from the heat but not many.

Cool. Precisely what I need to know right now.
I have... LOTS and LOTS of chilli peppers right now and I'm curious:
What is the best way to prepare the chilli pasta? You know, the Mexican one, with some unknown additives (like what makes that pasta so special and fleshy)...
Do you have any special recipe for that?
Sauces would be another interesting topic in the recipe section. ;)
Thanks.

Sorry Jack - I've never even had it, let alone have a recipe!!!
: O
All I know is whatever you're making, you add enough hot peppers to satisfy your personal taste. It's different for everyone. I usually add 10 little hot peppers to a pot of sauce, but for most that would be just way too hot, so it's whatever you like. Experimenting is everything when it comes to chili peppers.
Whatever you're making, just use scissors to cut little rings into the dish, or right into the pot. I even fry up hamburger, strain off the grease, then add 2-3 chilies and a couple cloves of garlic. Then I add some fresh tomatoes crushed up with my fresh grown basil, and pour it over pasta. A quick and easy, but delicious meal!
: )
P.S. Note: 2-3 chilies in this recipe would burn the lips off most!

Oh yeah, I forgot - you know me well by now!
: )
I usually have to make a separate 'hot' dish for company, because they are a bunch of hot pepper wussies! Can't take the heat. Good to know you like it hot also.
I should send ya some bhut jolokia seeds, Bob. Then talk to me about hot!
Mamma mia, now thatza spicey meatball!!!
: O
You cant be that old to remember the old alka seltzer commercial.............sorry , forgot you're in Canada:ha:
By all means send some seeds................I think?..........Sounds like they're for cooking , not eating. Ever try making home made hot sauce? Other than the usual poppers etc. that everyone does this is pretty satisfying and lasts long after harvest. Food process them add salt, and just enough vinegar to cover. Let it sit a few months( I can never wait longer) strain and you have your own yearly vintage. Depending on your blend or single pepper concoction it can be excellent.

I usually freeze them in my freezer and eat them all winter long, but thanks for the suggestions because I love hot sauce, Bob.
I plan on doing more things with my peppers later - if I can get off of these gardening forums long enough to do something else!
: O
Get away from the computer.........yeah talking to other gardeners can be addictive.........The peppers freeze well aye?..........never tried. Didn't grow any this year since I dedicated the space to bananas. The local organic farmer at the weekly farmers market takes good care of me though. I'll try some in the freezer if there's a glut of something that's interesting this fall when they come in.
The Hollyberry Lady

They freeze great - they're just soggy when ya thaw them. With hot peppers though you don't mind, because they just go into your food. I like to cut them into rings when they're still frozen and firm. The freezing doesn't affect the heat whatsoever.

The Hollyberry Lady

It was supposed to be just a purple cayenne plant, but I see my friend grew her purple cayenne a little too close to her jalapeno last season, so this is what her seeds labelled 'purple cayenne' produced!
I am not complaining though, because I love cayenne as well as Jalapeno - So a blend of the two is awesome and kind of unique. Very hot though. They are for the more advanced hot pepper lover.
So you serious about wanting to grow the Bhut Jolokia, Bob? It is considered the hottest pepper in the world! You'd have to be careful with them - they don't kid around, so long as you understand. I would send ya a couple other hot pepper seed varieties too.
PM me with a mailing address, will ya?...

My Carnation of India looking beautiful today! :) ~Cheryl
My peppers are doing great--I have half a dozen jalapenos and some Giant Marconis and one that I don't know what it is--never had a pepper that had a fuzzy leaf--but it looks kinda like a jalapeno. I just put up a quart of jalapeno peppers today--we use about 2 gallons a yr.
I am a big fan of peppers--I really think they have protected my stomach from the medication I take--many people get ulcers from taking it. I also use them for pain and itch relief--works great.

Hi HBL :), I grew them in a big pot the first summer then just brought them in and put them in the indoor garden. They lost some leaves over the winter but recovered when I put them in the ground in the spring. The plant was about 1 1/2 foot tall when I got it spring before last. Guess I'll dig it up this fall and bring it in again & just hope for the best.
Hope ya post some pics of the Caurulea when it blooms :) !

Passiflora caurulea are very hardy - we grew them outdoors in England for many years with no special attention. Left them outside for the winter and cut them back in the spring when they started to sprout. It used to flower like mad and set lots of orange fruits - quite tasty to eat but not as good as the commercial tender kinds.

I am growing my vine more for the ornamental beauty than anything.
Thanks for the information Eric - I was hoping you'd say that! I am growing mine in a pot also, but was going to bring it indoors over the winter as well. Here is how it looks currently...

Fantastic job, Hollyberry :) !! Never expected to see Passion vines in Ontario, especially some that awesome!! BTW, I was told that Passion vines were only supposed to bloom in the spring. Not sure why mine are blooming this close to Autumn. Guess they just got a mind of their own!

You may have been misinformed because I was told that they bloom in the summer and produce fruits into the Fall. Sounds to me like yours is right on schedule!

By the way...
Thank you, about my vine! I grew it from seed and it is over 7 or 8 months old now! I just keep weaving the vines back down the trellis and it has gotten really thick. I love the dark green leaves. Can't wait for flowers!

There are many species of Passiflora from both tropical and subtropical environments. The bloom and fruit (or lack of) varies quite a bit. My Passiflora edulis cultivar "Frederick" blooms non-stop from late spring through Fall here in San Diego. This time of year it is also raining fruit -- over a gallon a day.

Thanx for the info Richard :) ! Need to study these Passion Flowers a lot more. Till now, all I knew was that they were Passion flowers and looked awesome. Oh, and that they don't like winter.
Will definitely check "Passiflora edulis" out & learn more. Sounds like lots of fruit! Is it edible?

"Frederick" is the cultivar developed by CRFG founder Paul Thomson. Established vines are hardy in zone 9b -- provided there is no sustained freeze. The fruit sells for $4 each in New York.

Be careful what you wish for. I planted one little plant of Passiflora incarnata (maypop) 3 years ago. It now covers over 20 feet of fence, tries to cover all the plants in front of it (buddleia, lavender, balloon flowers, iris, phlox, etc.), and grows into the lawn. It's terribly invasive; beautiful...just know what you're getting in to.

Howard, I would love to have some seeds from your Maypop if I may. I ordered a plant from a nurserey 5-6 yrs ago & it gave the most beautiful flowers I ever saw. It died over winter. I bought passion fruit 1 1/2 -2 yrs ago & planted the seeds, & the vines are growing like crazy but I can't get a flower. Could I trade you something for some seeds? Thanks! Or, could I pay you for sending them to me?
