Sorry about the lack of production. On the plus side, ingestion of soursop has been repeatedly tied to the onset of atypical parkinson's disease.
Gosh! The soursop info worries me. I am cultivating asimina triloba pawpaw, a close relative to soursop. It has high levels of annonacin too. My trees are all set to bloom for the first time next summer. I guess I'd better think twice before gorging myself on the fruit.

Anonas are wonderful. Gorge and quit for a while. Graviola treatments are used to treat cancer.
I went to school with a guy who bragged about drinking a fifth of rye every day. He's no longer around!!
Everything in moderation, grasshopper!

A past neighbor of mine is an asst. director of research at the LA Jolla Neurological institute. In the Annona family, we figured that it was safe to eat 7 sugar apples per year, OR 5 cherimoyas per year, OR 2 soursops per year. Beyond that is a gamble. At 4 times those dosages for 3 or more years it is fairly certain you will have detectable symptoms - at least in a thorough physical.
But the Annonas paw-paw and atemoya do not carry these risks. The drug concentrate in the flesh of these fruits is 2% to 5% of cherimoya. You could eat around 200 a year and still be below most risk factors.

Fascinating. I have an atemoya tree, which I love, and a soursop which I freeze and eat if I can't sell it. I guess I'll keep eating the atemoya!
The idea that soursop is used in cancer treatment is not correct. There are compounds that could have an anti-cancer effect in very limited circumstances in a lab setting. But that is a far cry from being an actual treatment. The vast majority of treatments that seem promising in the lab fail to even get to Phase II clinical trials. A woman I know started drinking massive amounts of soursop juice when she got diagnosed with small cell lung cancer last year. She's dead of course. It's sad when people forgo proven treatments in order to try something they saw on a fraudulent Facebook meme.

...Graviola treatments are used to treat cancer. ...
It is true that soursop is grown commercially in the tropics by pharmaceutical companies. This accounts for the majority of cultivated acreage. The "harvest" is by cutting the plants back at two meter height and distilling Annonacin from the plant material, including the fruit. As a cancer treatment, Annonacin is a TOPICAL drug. For male prostate cancer it is microencapsulated and injected into the cell mass. Standard dosage is 35mg with a lifetime dosage of 70mg.
Contrast this with "Graviola" sold in health food stores. It is sold as a cancer preventative. A single dosage is 600mg. Annonacin is immune to the brain blood barrier. A person taking weekly dosages of Graviola has an equal likelihood of perishing from atypical parkinson's and cancer.
Further, consider the popular drink in Central and South America "guanabana". It contains about 50mg Annonacin. In terms of life expectancy, it is on the same par with cigarettes.
Why mess with this stuff? There are plenty of other great tasting fruits!!

Richard, do you know anything about rollinia in terms of the comparison of safe eating levels? It's also considered an annona right? It's one of my favorites.

Richard, do you know anything about rollinia in terms of the comparison of safe eating levels? It's also considered an annona right? It's one of my favorites.
Rollinia is a generic name that refers to approximately 65 different species of fruit, some of which are Annona and others are not.
Further, Rollinia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rollinia) is also a genus of plants in the Annona family (Annonaceae).
Rob, I know you are a careful person so you understand my reluctance here.
If we could narrow your plant down to a cultivar of a species or hybrid of a genus then I might be able to help.

I didn't realize that and I really don't know, honestly, what the species is I have. This seems like what the rollinia here is, if that's any help at all: Biriba (http://www.hort.purdue.edu/newcrop/morton/biriba.html)

Reading a bit further, I found that about 10 years ago Rollinias were reclassified as Annona. So the plant in question is listed here along with its synonyms: Annona mucosa information from NPGS/GRIN (http://www.ars-grin.gov/cgi-bin/npgs/html/taxon.pl?3491)
I don't have information on Annonacin levels in the fruit. But I did find this interesting article on a simplified method for checking directly from fruit pulp:
http://www.mdpi.com/1420-3049/14/12/5235/pdf
The Ag lab at the HILO GRIN repository would probably do this for the usual fee, or perhaps you have access to other resources.
Once the concentration is known, it can be compared to the published conc. of soursop.

how did you arrive at those numbers? i've read that a fruit a day over the course of a year is enough to produce effects, but then there are so many other factors that need to be taken into account (cultivar, environment, etc.). i am sure a guanabana grown in the tropics could equal the effects of 10 grown in the subtropics. i am just curious, because 2 /year probably isn't going to cut it for me.
i personally don't think i could cut it out of my diet. my family grew up on soursop in the islands, so the reward of a good soursop every once in a while exceeds the perceivable risk to me.
Richard
10-26-2014, 01:43 PM
how did you we arrive at those numbers?
Analysis of peer-reviewed published papers and knowledge of neurotoxicity.
i am sure a guanabana grown in the tropics could equal the effects of 10 grown in the subtropics.
Personally I don't believe that. In one paper, the tested conc. of annonacin in cherimoyas grown in Costa Rica and southern California were statistically identical.
But Merce, I'm not trying to convince you one way or another. Instead I'd like other readers to have a balanced presentation.

i meant you as in you guys or you two...
i am just trying to weigh the risk, but it's hard to get a balance of info without knowing which articles you are referencing. i appreciate your knowledge, but i think the risk is over-exaggerated. the articles that i have read (published and peer-reviewed) associate larger amounts with side effects and 2 soursop versus 365 a year is a huge difference, so i am trying to bump that number up to say ~300 /year? :ha:
at least cherimoyas don't grow here because of the environmental differences, so i guess i don't have to worry about those. then again the dream atemoya that i have growing closely resembles cherimoya, so i'm not so sure...

Pretty much everything!
We had a very mild winter and are about 3 weeks ahead of where we should be. The crocuses are long finished but tulips and daffodils are everywhere. My arctic kiwis are developing blossoms and both the peach and pear trees are already blossoming. Even my dragon's claw arum is about 6" above ground (on it way to an eventual height of well over 4ft)

Unidentified Brugmansia, but I think I have it narrowed down to Jamaica Yellow, I bought it at six feet for 6 dollars. It smells very strongly of Lemons, and the whole greenhouse is full of the fragrance. You dont usually find anything like this out here in the sticks of Oklahoma, and I was lucky to buy it.

I'll bet you'd like the fruit of American Beauty grown in your yard. :DThe only spot I have all day sun is possibly by my mailbox. My lot runs east to west and I have big trees in front and back. Up north I'd never try to garden with that much shade but here lemons, bananas, etc. seem pretty happy with 3 hours of late morning/early afternoon direct sunlight out back. It's going to take me a least a year to adapt to this "2 season" climate.

In my climate, dragon fruit prefers morning sun and afternoon shade.
See? I haven't a clue how to grow anything in this new frontier! I have potatoes in my west "shade" bed (maybe 2 hours of dappled light). They're happily spudding along even though it's dry and I don't have a hose to reach to the front. (I'm still trying to figure out why there's a joint compound bucket buried in that bed with pipes in it just beneath what I think is the broken faucet. Someone said it might be the shut off valve but the water company told me you shut it off at the meter at the street if you need to do work. Up north your shutoff is inside just past the inside meter--water company has a shut off at the street to handle deadbeats.)
So as to not further derail this thread, I'm not prepared to grow any dragon fruit. But the flowers are really gorgeous.

What is the origin of your Grimal jaboticaba?
My Grimal is still small. Growing it out fast now in a Jackpot. Faster than in ground. Got it from Flying Fox Fruits nursery in Orlando area.
They mainly deal in Myrciaria/Plinia, Eugenia, Annona, Garcinia, Pouteria.
Also in Chupaticaba for select customers!! www.FlyingFoxFruits.com
BTW folks --- presently, it is now very likely, due to input from Brazil, that -----the variety called "Grimal" in the USA, is most likely a variety called "Peluda-de-alagoas"...and if not this variety, then some other similar variety from the North East of Brazil...that doesn't have a botanical name.
Still a great fruit for those who like to eat right off the trunk.

My Grimal is still small. ... Got it from Flying Fox Fruits nursery in Orlando area. ...
I have issues with Flying Fox Fruits, because like several other suppliers I've caught them (or perhaps the writers of their literature) being non-factual about plant sources and names. Oh well, it's part of the landscape in collecting "lesser known fruits". Being somewhat disconnected from the operation, I don't fault the owner directly.
The keepers of the flame are the Royal Botanical Society of England who have a few hundred employees devoted to the taxonomy of the tribe Myrteae alone at their facility north of London. They use modern genetic techniques, etc. Their publications are mostly behind a pay wall -- accessible to those who are willing to put up a few hundred dollars to their local University library per year for Carte-Blanche journal access.
I am enamored with fruits of the Myrteae tribe (other than Psidium) because they are so appealing to my palete. The Cherry Of The Rio Grande (Eugenia involucrata (http://www.ars-grin.gov/cgi-bin/npgs/html/taxon.pl?312736)) and the prevalent Jaboticaba species (Plinia cauliflora (http://www.ars-grin.gov/cgi-bin/npgs/html/taxon.pl?465344)) grow well here and under some cultivation methods produce plum-size fruits with similar proportions of flesh to seed cavity. And as you probably know, the taste is totally amazing -- somewhere between Santa Rosa Plum and Tropical Banana.

Are the pineapples in your store grown in Florida? Ours are grown in southern Mexico, Costa Rica, etc. and as Lau points out take a long time to develop fruit here.
I heard you can put an apple in the center to help it produce fruit, but I have never tried that.

The maya is blooming so much. Unfortunately there was a big change in temperature and the maya had about 20 buds drop over the course of a couple days. The peach hasn't dropped one yet. The maya still has a massive amount of blooms somewhere around 35 opening right now :)

They get about 2 feet long including the leaf petiole, are toothed, and are pretty cool looking even without the flowers. It is having its first bloom right now, and it started out yellow, then turned a little more orange. The bloom has been open for 2 days and has not burned or browned, and may be a little bit too fragrant lol. I have it on my porch and wow! I cant imagine a whole tree of them, probably pass out lol, I thought my first Brug Jamaica Yellow was strong, till I smelled this one. You may have Dr Seuss, its one of the parents of Grimaldi and looks a little more peach to me. Are you able to keep your Brugs in full sun? I think Grimaldi could take it, but I doubt Jamaica Yellow would, it seems picky, I am not too fond of it yet, it does not flower much in warm weather even with fertilizing every other day, but I counted about 80 buds on it, so hopefully it will put on a show now finally.

I twist the top off and cut off all the yellow, into the white a little is ok. Pull off the bottom leaves until about an inch or so of bare stem is revealed and put into a glass of water in a sunny location. Change the water every couple days and in a week or two it will sprout roots. This has worked on at least a half dozen for me. I only ever had one die and that was two months after planting in the ground. Never knew why, it just didn't want to grow... I have another that is growing fine in a little plastic cup outside until I figure out where I want to plant it. It's getting kinda big... Another was in a pile of scraps I threw out beside my banana which decided to live, another pineapple there as I don't have the heart to kill it now.
Sometimes they start looking like they are dying, but that is ok. They like sunlight, even when doing this. They have a small root system so they make a great potted plant. What they do not tolerate well is cold. We had a light frost last week and they all got yellowish tinged on me, but are still alive.

What do you mean by twisting the top off? I don't eat pineapples, so I'm not that familiar with them. You mean twist the foliage out of the fruit itself, no cutting?

Pineapples sold in stores are bred for (1) durability to market, and then (2) taste.
Consider growing a better tasting pineapple fruit available from online resellers in Florida.

Thanks Richard. I dislike the taste of pineapple even more than bananas, so I'm not bothered with the taste. I'm just growing them for the plant, not the fruit. Most especially, because my dad told me he didn't think I could grow a pineapple from a top. I'm mostly doing it just to show him it can be done. :p

Most especially, because my dad told me he didn't think I could grow a pineapple from a top. I'm mostly doing it just to show him it can be done. :p

Hmm, never heard that one before, LOL!
I've got 2 nice varieties at home. I'll send you some when they fruit if US customs allows it. Have you ever tried pineapple jam?
I also tend to grow things I don't eat. I have pineapples, bananas, figs (again--why?) and citrus. I love tomatoes and standard fruits/veggies but they're fairly plebeian plants that anyone can grow (except here in FL it seems). I'm fascinated by different foliage and flowers so am drawn to the "unique". Plus you make a lot of friends at harvest time.;) BTW, in my efforts to find a way to stomach the flowers from my many ficus trees, I collected at least 100 recipes; I most certainly didn't test them all but I posted the one that more than made me glad I'd grown them. http://www.bananas.org/302308-post4.html

If you ever find yourself out in the tropics you may want to try a pineapple or Papaya. Much better than flower induced ones.

I grew a pineapple from the tops as well. Planted it in the grown (even though I knew it would croak come winter) makes for a great focal point. Really showy colors on the leaves.

well this morning the flower was open
i had read that the flower would only be open for 2 days max and if left unpollenated would fall off
so i got in there and lifted up a petal with a wire twist tie
wasnt seeing anything resembling pollen so i left it for later
when i got back this evening the flower was gone
so no pod this time but it is still exciting that the tree has matured enough to flower

For people in hot humid locations, Florida and the deep south, you can grow summer veggies but you have to find the right variety. If you want cucumbers, grow burr gherkins (lasted April until December for me), thai purple yard long beans (instead of normal green beans), pink thai egg tomato (only thing that killed it last year was the stink bugs, not the heat).

Yes there is a fragrance once the flowers open.
What I do with mine is usually mid to late in Dec I let the pots go dry, I don't mean bone dry lol and do that for a 2 or 3 weeks. Once they are watered properly in Jan they seem to burst. Just my two cents

Well ... I'll just post it here. Now due to your location, I'm fairly certain it's in a pot so it can be indoors during the winter.
As such, I'd feed it occasionally -- perhaps every 2-3 months with a 20-10-20 water-soluble Orchid food. It'll love it. Just don't feed it the month you take it indoors ... wait two months.
Now after 3 feedings (6-9 months), if it hasn't responded then supplement the next feeding (in addition to the 20-10-20) with a strong orchid bloom formula such as Hawaiian Bud & Bloom 5-50-17.

Prunus serrulata - Ornamental Cherry 'Fudan zakura'
In 2016 I got lucky in a city of over 600,000 - only a very limited quantity of the trees were made available to city residents (and only Vancouver residents as proof of residency had to be produced to make a purchase).
This news article is dated April 27, 2016
BCIT cherry tree sale is an effort to revive rare varieties
The seedlings are the result of a 6-year UBC/BCIT program to save varieties at risk of disappearing. It's a plant sale that has been in the works for six years.
A program to save a few rare varieties of cherry trees — put on by the University of British Columbia and the British Columbia Institute of Technology— is culminating on Friday, as more than 300 seedlings are made available to the public.
Vancouver is known for its beautiful cherry blossoms which explode into bloom each spring, and many of those trees originally came as a gift from Japan after the First World War. Dozens of different varieties were included in the donation, which was meant as a memorial for Japanese soldiers who fought in the war. Some have flourished over the years, but other varieties have begun to disappear.
"If we lost them, they would definitely be gone forever, because we can't import any more cherry trees from Japan, because of virus quarantine issues," said BCIT instructor Keith Turner. Turner and his students in a biotechnology honours program at both UBC and BCIT have been working to collect some of the rarest varieties and reproduce them in test tubes in a process that takes two years before the little clones can be planted.
The hundreds of 12" - 20" seedlings look young, but since they're clones, they're actually about 100 years old. Some of the clones can be traced back to trees in Japan that are now more than 400 years old, according to Turner.
This tree was only about 2ft tall when I got it and now its over 6ft and flowered for the first time this spring!

As an experiment, last summer I planted amaryllis in my covered garden - I got them for Christmas and am not really into this type of plant (until now). I figured the bulbs would live or die after the summer so it would be no big deal if they did not survive.
FYI, my covered garden is 16' x 8' x 9'; it keeps things dry but inside temp is the same as the other side temp.
We had a nasty winter (for us) with a lot of wet snow and some minus temperatures so image my surprise when I noticed the bulbs growing this spring. Then I noticed a bud forming on one.
This is the result.......

I have a "Slumdog Millionaire" type story about how I discovered amaryllis. You know how people sometimes ask people of my age, "What were you doing when you first heard that John F. Kennedy was assassinated?"? At age 17, I must have been in high school but I have absolutely no memory of hearing about the assassination. But, the next day, on Saturday, November 23, 1963, I was with my friend shopping in downtown Chicago when I came upon the store front of Vaughan's Seed and Bulb. Co. which had a big display of potted blooming amaryllis. I also remember my friend telling me that his father cried about the assassination. Still, it was business as usual downtown.

I love the Amaryllis flowers. Every couple of years I would buy one. This year I am trying something new. I bought 250 seeds on EBay and planted them in my garden. I bet I have over 100 tiny plants so far. Not sure how many more will pop up or how I will overwinter them. What I do know is at maturity in 5 or so years, these plants will take up a fair amount of space. I am embracing the challenge.

Beutiful sight though its not season for it (yet).

Larger plant on right:
http://www.general-cathexis.com/images/ColocasiaGigantea2_2-2-19.jpg
I bought it from Brian's Botanicals, maybe, 15 years ago. It does not have a growth habit typical of Colocasia Gigantea because it only grows large under very low light conditions. In full sunlight it stays small. Last Spring, I put the larger plant under bushes and never watered it with the intention of killing it. It grew better than ever, so I kept it. Both plants bloom often and the flowers look like those of Colocasia Gigantea but I don't know what it really is.
BTW, see the two window boxes of impatiens. For decades, I kept them outside and replanted them in the Spring. Two years ago, I got the bright idea to take them inside the greenhouse. The impatiens are quite large before I bring them in so I prune them down to 2".

You are right. I bought it such a long time ago that I must be confused. Maybe, it's Alocasia Borneo Giant. I'm sure it had something big in its name.

Daffodils will be up in about 40-60 days.
Basjoos will follow in about 70 90 days.
Actual days to get an outdoor banana to flower and produce edible fruit:ha::ha::ha:
The days are getting longer by the minute.
First frost in about 270 days.

They would work .. I do not know how many chill hours are required though.:ha:
Snowdrops are first up in spring( Jan -Feb) and endure single digit temps, frost and snow.
They naturalize and clump well and the whitetail deer do not eat them.
They might be sold at big box stores in your area.
Might cost a can of spray paint, some nuts and bolts and some rust.:)

:ha: thanks for answering that. it's funny how the lack of a question mark can change the whole meaning of a sentence. :ha:
figured they might not grow here seeing as there is snow on the ground. might try any way they are pretty. thanks

Labeled as Colocasia Gigantea:

Definitely an Alocasia and not Colocasia. You can tell by the upright growth and veins on the leaves, could be Borneo Giant as I know Brian sells those as well. Gigantea have white flowers. I've got several Colocasia Gigantea from him and they've done very well the past year.

I believe that it the Hoya caronosa, at least I think mine is, you can easily grow from a leaf snapped off.
Mines around 25yrs owned originally by my nan then passed to me.
