Hey DM ---- have you tasted Brewster, Hakk Yipp and Mauritius, and what do you think of the tastes compared to Swthrt?
@dalmationsoap: Nice strawberries you got there! What variety are they?
@Snookie: Sweet pumpkinseed sunfish! While in the same family as bluegill, see the red/black dot thing? If I remember correctly it is characteristic of pumpkinseeds. The two are often confused, as both are in the lepomis genus. Either way, what did you catch it on? Its great sized!

It's that time folks --- alligator pear time!
These are from the 12 foot high "Lula maybe not so Lula" avocado tree.
Have eaten 4 so far this season. It's just plain great. Taste and texture much more like the West Indian race of cado.
Seven pounds, 12 oz.

My very first avocado! A Green Gold variety, created at the University of Hawaii. Took a couple weeks to ripen, but it is very good, with a firm, thick, and not at all watery texture, which is what I like in an avocado. About 30 more on the tree to harvest in the next couple months.

None of my sapodilla are ripe yet, hoping my black sapote starts fruiting this year. Don't think I want to give up the yard space to grow my own passion fruit. I spend enough time trying to keep the non-fruiting passion vines from climbing into and taking over my fruit trees.

Over the last 5 years I have probably tasted most of the tropical fruit grown in S FL. On the tasting table at my rare fruit club. I have yet to enjoy a sapodilla, sapote or jackfruit. Started the habit of having a napkin in my left hand to quickly upchuck fruit I can't stand. Came to realize the problem is people bring in fruit that is always under or over ripe. They are saving the best for home.
Will never forget my first ever taste of jackfruit. It tasted so bad I regurgitated it all into my plate. Spoiled the nice piece of cheese cake someone baked. The awful taste lasted for hours. So now I bite off a very little piece - napkin in hand. Told everyone that jackfruit tasted like something that fell off the back end of Lassie!!!

4 peppers from my potted plant which is growing well in not all day sun. I only meant to pick the 2 red ones but had to take the 2 green also because an armadillo decided to raid my potted garden (notice I didn't say "pot garden"). He broke the tall branch off holding the greens so I cut the plant back. He also dug up the miracle DC that arose from 4 poorly separated pups that were dead until last week when I noticed a tiny set of new leaves peeping out. Not sure if I found the corm but I did try to replant it. I can get another easily but what a disappointment.
On a high note...these are the very first bell peppers I have ever grown that did not have 1/4" walls and tasted like swill. Gave 1 red and green away. I cut into my saved red. Blocky, sweet and delicious!

:woohoonaner:Thank you! After all my failures in "alien land" this was beyond enticingly yummily sweet. I've had a some great red peppers in my lifetime but this was absolutely perfection! Even the green was amazing. (Yes, I've long known that homegrown plucked straight then nibbled are always tastiest but this was my 1st successful non hot pepper and I was totally awed by the intensity of flavor.)
Pots work but watering is clumsy so isn't the ultimate answer; has anyone tried building a wood "earth box" type system out of untreated pallets? (Can get those and I don't expect them to last more than 2 years.) Or have a link as to how to do it? I would like something with a reservoir (stupid heavy plastic on the bottom) with a drain that lets excess water escape but with an easy waterer PVC pipe included and my searches are coming up empty.

i'm sure someone will correct me if i'm wrong. i think it's the amount of water that's inside combined with color/size (maturity). the younger the sweeter/more water and the older the more meat/less water

You can tell the approximate age visually, but that's not really helpful. Each peduncle has many cocos of similar maturity, so as it's getting close to ready, you test one and keep track of the date. At the stage in the photo, the endocarp is soft and can be punctured with your finger. The flavor changes dramatically as the coco matures and it has different uses at each stage. Unless you can pick your own cocos, you'll probably never taste these.

Here's 3 lbs (about 2 gallons) of habaneros I harvested today. These peppers are from my 3 year old plant that did its all and expired this weekend. Not a lack of water or anything else - just completion of life cycle. It certainly did its best - not only in the quantity of peppers, but they are D*mn Hot!! I wouldn't use more than 1 per quart or 2 per gallon of salsa. Here you see them sitting in a large bowl, inside an oversize plastic bag before going into the refrigerator. In a day or two I'll sort and vacuum seal them for longer term refrigeration and freezing.

The Purira chili peppers. This picutre was taken a few weeks ago and now they are red. I have another picture of those.

The Habanero peppers. They said they were red but they only turned orange so I think what we really got was orange Habanero seeds.
https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3883/15345546122_17a8decb58_b.jpg
The Hungarian Hot Wax peppers. The first ones really dench and they are all really hot - hotter than Jalapenos.

The Long thin Cayenne peppers. We got tons of them.

The peppers I picked today. I just tossed them all on the same plate except the Serrano, Purira, and Cayenne peppers.
The Cayenne peppers are on the right side and the green Seranno peppers on that plate were from a plant that died so I picked them anyway.
The second picture is a mix up of Serrano and Purira peppers.

Wow this is amazing, I've never head of a mango holding fruit this far north, I know I definitely have never achieved this. Did u buy a grafted plant? Also where did you get the babaco papaya? Did u start from seeds?
I've tried starting both these plants from seed but have not managed to keep them beyond a few weeks, if they even start at all - don't know if the soil is too cold or what because I've tried many different ways (including heating the soil) and many different mediums but so far no luck. The best I was able to achieve was a Julie mango that I started from seed (brought it back from St. Vincent) and it survived for just over a year before it took a turn and I was unable to revive it :(
As for these two, I got the papaya during a local annual exotic plant sale in May of 2013 when if was only about 30" and now it is about 5'; FYI, this is the same plant I was looking for help with last winter when it lost ALL its leaves....but it made a great comeback this past spring and only has 1 fruit left to ripen; we've eaten the other 9....
I also got the mango during the plant sale in May of 2014; it appears to be graphed but I was still shocked to see it flower during the summer and then produce fruit! - especially considering its height.
Both these plants (as well as other exotics) spend the summer and early fall in a double-walled poly carb greenhouse before coming into the house, and I guess they really like these conditions because this is the result..... :)

... Also where did you get the babaco papaya? Did u start from seeds?
Babaco (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Babaco) does not produce from it's own seed. It is a naturally occurring sterile hybrid from central and south america. Humans propagate it by cutting. In nature the plant also sprouts from broken limbs brought down by storms onto the fertile mulch in its native environment. Seeds also sprout when the two parent species are in proximity. The seeds of another species called mountain papaya or mountain paw paw (Vasconcellea pubescens) are sometimes sold online as Babaco to unsuspecting buyers.

Thanks Richard. How do the seeds sprout when the parents are in close proximity, if the parents are sterile? I always though babaco was the mountain papaya, but now I learn that they are a different species. Is there anymore information you can provide me, it would be much appreciated. Also if any one knows any sources of this plant in Canada please let us know, I've looked for this one for a while, but people around here just generally have no idea what im talking about.
Richard
02-01-2015, 03:10 AM

Red potatoes. From 1 5 gallon bucket, i harvested about 2 pounds. It was a left over potato from the grocery store, it started to sprout. I put about an inch of potting soil mixed with compost in a bucket, placed the potato and put about another inch of soil. 3 weeks later I had a plant. I just add more soil as it grew.
I was just testing it. Really happy with the results.

I've given up trying to explain to people that, yes, you can grow potatoes from store bought spuds. No, they aren't treated to inhibit growth and, yes, they will be clones of the ones you were eating a few months ago only tastier.
I have 4 "Irish types" ready to cut up sitting on my shelf right now--that's probably 20 "plants" when I'm done. And I'm going to split a sweet potato or 2 to plant also. Even if I don't get tubers from the orange ladies, I can eat the leaves.
I have tried pineapple tops but they never work for me. lol

I have 1 in the dirt and another to plant; I'm not moving again until they produce. BTW, I grew one in MD for 9 years that never ever bloomed. Nice houseplant but not what I was expecting.

Some say to cut the top off a store bought pineapple and stick it in the ground, that never worked for me here in south Florida. Every one I started in a cup of water has grown and within a few years has given me a delicious albeit small fruit.
If you use a cup, make sure its clear glass so you can see when it needs water, cut the top way up high till you see little round dots in the meat, do not let the bottom get dry and change the water every week.
Once in the ground they don't do well with neglect. Water and fertilize like every other tropical. Mine are in partial shade except summer when it gets full sun.
Okay, what is that PR? I assume it's edible so how does it taste?

Where I live I can leave my tops in a pile and have had some even begin to flower without ever being specifically watered or fertilized. I try to plant them when I eventuallyget around to it.

that's very true, I wish I could grow some Bing cherries god knows I love them. But I do have a cherry of the Rio Grande, which are sweet and juicy.
I am in zone 9b and we only have about 225-275 chill hours a year here.
And most of the good cherries require between 400-700 chill hours.

You do have enough chill to try the low-chill Minnie Lee / Royal Lee combination. They fruit even in places with virtually no chill (consistently <100 hr for my friend in Santa Monica, CA). You need both varieties together for pollination. The people I know who grow them say they are very tasty cherries. Not sure how they'd do in your climate, but you have enough chill.

the taste was great hint of grape with kiwi and very sweet, and took them 27 days from flower till I picked them. I never am good at waiting they could of stayed on 4-5 more days and might have been better but I loved them the way they were. Been raining a lot here lately and I did not want them to get watery tasting so I picked them. I got 10 more and it has just really started to bloom, so I will figure it out soon as when the best picking time is.
I will say this, they are very easy to grow and worth every bit of the effort to take care of them over the winter.

It's a MAJOR hassle. I have 10 coffee trees and I planned on having 12, one to satisfy coffee needs for each month but I stopped at 10 because the skinning, drying, roasting and grinding is such a pain.
The coffee was quite good though but too labor intensive to make it a viable option so my coffee trees serve as a visual barrier or green fence between me and the condo in back of me.

My peaches are excellent. I just finished up the winter crop of carambola, and the trees are already blooming for the summer crop, sapodilla are still abundant, I get at least one a day, and on the slate for picking this week is a jack fruit, Canistel, lemon drop mangosteen and pineapple.

Yeah, Sabarra are like that, it drives me CRAZY :-) I planted my first in 2011 as a 6' tall 7 gallon, and this year was my first decent crop, every year is better than the last.
Knowing I could and would be able to eat a LOT of Jabo, I planted another one (a 4' footer) in 2014 and it's coming along S-L-O-W-L-Y, but it's healthy. I hope to have fruit in 2020.

Last year, without cherry tomatoes, the squirrels ate most of my large tomatoes. As you probably know, they tend to take one bite out of many large tomatoes instead of finishing a tomato.

Great harvest....
Today, I went out to find a ripe tomato for a sandwich. I ended up picking 10 lbs. more of ripe Steakhouse tomatoes. It is definitely better than Big Zac.

Regarding the unwanted rotation, if you used File Explorer to "rotate" the JPEG file to an upright position, it is probably the fault of Windows 10. The methods used differ between Windows 10 and previous versions. For example, if you view a Windows 10 "rotated" JPEG in Windows 7 File Explorer or Windows 7 Paint, it will be unrotated. The Windows 7 rotation method works with all programs but the Windows 10 method only works with some programs.

Unfortunately I have windows 10. I did find a way of rotating the image once I had uploaded it but that either caused the site to crash or the thumbnail to disappear.
I unfortunately have a lot of issues with this site, including being unable to upload images (these are the first images I've been able to upload in over a year) and even being unable to access it for days at a time.
:( :( It's no fun being a "lurker" :( :(

Amazing! Homegrown pineapples are so good! The pups will fruit in less than a year and be larger! I’m excited to taste more of my new types! Tastes nothing like the store does it!

Just leave it and keep growing it. There should be some new ones. They grow from above the soil and along the bottom of the plant. Those on bottom are called “pups” and others grow along the top, under where the picked fruit was. These are called “slips” if i remember right.
