Greetings Banana Lovers!
My name is Tam and I live in Chapin SC. Born in Charleston SC, Grew up on James Island. Miss the Island lifestyle and Folly Beach very much. When I moved inland I brough my Palms, Banana's, and all my tropicals with me. OK at propogating the Butia Captia Palms, or Jelly palms, but not yet too good with my banana's. Started with 2 small ones in pots. Planted in rock garden in full am sun on east-west track. 3rd season inland with them and had 2 pods this year with fruit! Right now I have about eight brown stalks sticking up and not sure what to do. Help me, help me she cried!!! Cut off the top leaves when the frost browned them. Too big for my loppers so unable to cut down to the base. Where can I buy a Machete'? The young man at Lowes looked at me like I was a serial killer or something. Then ran away with out speaking.

For a machete, you'll need to find a real nursery - a large independently owned place that carries Felco products. They make a few folding varieties which if you keep clean won't need sharpening for a decade or two.

That's funny! We have a machete that we got at either Home Depot or Lowes. We use it to chop down Johnson grass as it gets all wound up in the bush whacker.

hello and welcome. i understand the need for a machette, my den is almost over run with nanas and others. if you ask for one of those here in tn, they would probably just call the law then run away screaming! LOL!
p.s.( you can never have too many nana trees!)

I use one of these to cut down bananas. Swing it downward at a 45 degree angle and watch out for your toes.

Thanks to all the nanas that welcomed me. Still trying to navigate this site. Kinda strange 4 me but hope I'll get it soon. That damn map is driving me nanana's! Found my house but could not set the pin after 3 tries. Old photo with my old truck in the driveway. And it took me forever to get the location correct. Still trying to find pics of last seasons trees & fruit on my pc. Got them on my phone, got to figure out how to get them here. I'll start posting photos of my palms & banana's ASAP. the old brown stalks look awful. not sure what to do with them. cut them all the way to the ground, or just leave them alone. Help!!LOL!
thanks again y'all! Tam Hicks Chapin.SC

Welcome from Ecuador - here we buy our machetes at the corner store. If you're frustrated with other stores and want to try an alternative for lopping your old pstems, try the Dozuki from Lee Valley Veritas (http://www.leevalley.com/wood/page.aspx?c=2&p=41736&cat=1,42884). It's certainly become my fave for lopping nanners down, and it's ripping fast. (If you've ever used a machete, even a reall sharp one, to chop down a banana, you'll really appreciate how much less strenuous it is with a dozuki. Then again, my nanners and plantains tend towards 10-15' tall plants, so they're pretty sturdy near the base....)
Personally, I'd cut them off fairly close to the ground and hope for puppies.

For a machete: go to Cold Steel High Performance Knives (http://www.coldsteel.com)
Go for the 24" latin machete. I use that for cutting branches off of spruce-trees as well.
