Mitchel-Love the images. I especially like the variegated pineapple. If you don't mind me asking, where did you find that one?

Thanks Richard. I bought that Tri color from the guy on ebay that Mediahound posted a link to in the Pineapple thread. I just went to his other auctions and asked if he had any. He sent this sucker that must be over three feet tall for 9 bucks plus shipping! Word of warning though, it has some serious thorns and the leaves are not as sturdy as regular pineapples. I had been looking everywhere and this was the only source for the 3 color I could find. Lot's of 2 color variegated out there but it's just not the same. I believe there is also some Pineapples that grow red fruit and have green leaves. That's next on my list.

Hi Mitchel,
That is a beautiful pineapple! The link to the item on eBay seems to have expired so I can no longer get to the seller's name. Do you happen to remember it?
Many Thanks,
Richard

Glad you got the pineapple!
My only dwarf pineapple fruit was stolen the other day.
That's what I get for having ornamentals by the front door...
I don't even think I have any photos of it to remember.
Flamingo Gardens here in South Florida should have some of the tri-color pineapples for sale. Unless they sold them all...
Maybe they can arrange shipping for you

Thanks guys, I'm lucky to live where it's possible to grow all year round. I heard the were having La Nina this year and that we may not see any more rain for the next 6-8 months here in So Cal. :( I'm not a big lover of rain but the pollution just seems to collect in the form of black soot everywhere until we get some rain. I'm talking about the trees, roofs, streets, sidewalks, and everything else gets dirty after a long dry spell.

Mitchel,
When talking about the pollution, don't forget that crud that gets on the INSIDE of our car windows. At least where I live. :)
It looks like we may be in for a change in the weather? I know we need rain, but 80's in February works for me! And my recent bloom is doing very good! I really was wondering if it would have fruit because of the earlier frost here; but today I see some nice bananas!

Anna, you better get them ready cause they said it's going to get cold at night later this week. This is really like desert weather, hot during the day and cold at night! I have been taking all the leaves that turn yellow or brown and cutting them into small pieces along with all my other yard trimmings except the grass and pilling it up around the bases of the Bananas to keep the warmth in the soil at night. I only water in the morning so it can dry out and warm up by the evening. My thought is that enough of the ground will stay warm and radiate heat upwards to the leaves. For my Pineapples and my Mango I used about 3 inches of crushed black Lava rock. Same thing here, I water in the morning and it collects heat all day then stays warm at night. I have checked the soil with my fingers in the morning and it seems to be working well!
I hear ya on that stuff on the inside of window, especially if you drive on the freeway a lot and use the polluted outside air. My truck doesn't have a heppa filter system so I get whatever air is around me!

Those are great ideas! I can already feel the chill in the air. :-(
I am so upset. I have a critter - probably a gopher - around my banana plants. I try to use "natural" controls whenever I can. I took some large garlic cloves and put them in the critter holes today, hoping to make them go somewhere else. I went outside and about 20 minutes later, the thing had put the cloves outside the holes, and closed them!

Hi Mitchel- The pineapple suckers came to day and they look great. I cannot believe how big they are. Do you have any suggestions about how to handle them until get established and growing on their own. They do not have any roots at present but look ready to grow!
Thanks,
Richard

Well I just stuck mine in some cactus mix in a pot against a south facing wall and am hoping it will grow.! :ha: So far it looks great. He did send instructions which said to just plant it in the ground but I wasn't quite ready for that so it went into a pot. How about those thorns!! Those things are wicked!

Mitchel-Thanks for the info. You are certainly correct about the spines. I was still picking them out of my hands late this afternoon. The colors on the plants look really good. I am anxious to see what they look like after they get some roots under them. I have a really tasty golden pineapple that is just starting to bloom again (this is the second fruit from that plant). I can't wait to eat that thing. I also can't wait for it to warm up a little more so they all can leave the greenhouse and move back outside.
Thanks again for the contact info on the plants.

Here's the report from my winter garden last night. Air temperature -19F.
I hope my stuff makes it through this. I might be replacing some plant material come spring.
Fortunately, I brought all my bananas inside.

You haven't experienced cold until you've felt what a -60F windchill feels like.
It's fightening really. I can't wait 'til spring.
My bamboo's might take a hit as well as my agaves.
I'm hoping for the best.
We'll talk about that Sikki in about 6 weeks Mitchel :D

I actually know know what that feels like. I spent a winter in Mo. one year with my Uncle on his farm. It was the coldest year on record and one day the wind chill was -68F  I was sent out that day to cut firewood. It was so cold I could not get the chainsaw started! I ended up picking up some scattered sticks for the fire. I remember that with all my winter clothing I could only handle about 30 minutes of being outside. Of course this was over 20 years ago and winter clothing was no where near as advanced as what we have now.

Missouri? What parts of Missouri get that cold? Or where you referring to Montana (MT)? Please say Montana :ha: !

I was in Valles Mines Missouri. A very small farm town off Hwy 67. I have no idea what the town looks like these days, could be a big town now? As I remember it was -28 with a -68F wind chill. Of course I could just be delusional! I turned 21 there and boy did I do some drinking! I think Pabst blue ribbon is the local beer?

I know I shouldn't complain because alot of you live where it gets truly COLD, but my poor plants are not happy with the current weather we're having. We had a hard freeze last night, and it's supposed to be colder tonight. 28! It's going to take me a good hour to try to cover whatever plants I can. Hopefully my two bunches of nanners will make it through okay...

Anna, how's it going out there?
AnnaJW

I'm sure getting tired of the rain and the cold nights, but I know that warmer weather is right around the corner... Right? :-)
I have an Ice Cream that I think is ready to bloom this summer, so am keeping a close watch on that one! The Apricot and Nectarine I was worried about are loaded with fruit! My two bunches of Orinoco's are doing well, but a bit on the small side.
How is your Apple doing?
momoese
03-30-2006, 10:28 PM
The Apple is doing good! Today I made a bamboo kick stand for it. I think tomorrow I'll get a picture of the flower bud and post it.
Sounds like your garden is doing fine even with the nasty weather. :) I know we have spring rains here but jeeeze! Enough allready!!!! I have seeded the lawn and put steer manure out twice after the rain washed it away the first time.
I guess it could be even worse like it's been in Hawaii. I heard they had rain for 60 days straight. Today was their first real sunshine they have had in a while!
What happened to the no rain forecast we had here? Maybe the global warming is making it more difficult to predict the weather?
