This guy's a huge one! I swear it's a Woodchuck, but people keep telling me we don't have Woodchucks here. The holes and mounds are HUGE. I dragged my husband out back a few days ago to show him the holes/mounds. And didn't that sucker varmit pop up!!! (I so wish it wasn't so cute) :)
I parked the lawn mower in the area where the holes were; which worked for a few days. Now the sucker has crossed into my Banana area. I poured Hot sauce all over the mounds today. If he's there tomorrow, I will have to resort to calling a Pro.

Anna, I don't even want to tell you how my mother gets rid of them! Suffice it to say that she is the most patient, cold blooded, gopher executioner holding a pointed shovel ever to live!

Why not gas him, then blow him up? :D

Speaking of large gophers and woodchucks, have you read the $64 Tomato?

Gophers reproduce very quickly, don't hesitate. Here's a method that works: get the gopher poison that is rated only for gophers. Put a scant 1/2 teaspoon in every hole opening and plug it with a rock, making sure not to cover the poison with dirt or the rock. You want the gopher(s) to die in the hole so that in a year's time the poison and the gopher are inert.

That's kind of funny, considering my mom wanted to sit out there and wait for it to pop up. With a shovel in hand. LOL!

Maybe I should go to the local arcade and pratice playing Wack-a-Mole? :)

It's about gardening as an extreme sport!

I'm sorry to hear the bugger's back. You might have to call out the big guns for this one...

I have many cats that roam my back yard that reduce the mole and rodent populations at my house.

Speaking of standing over the hole with a shovel...

A couple years ago, my cousin and I were sitting around the backyard just after dusk, drinking a few homebrews, :nanadrink:and chatting, when I noticed something moving around in my strawberries. It looked like a giant worm or pink snake at first. Then I noticed a second one next to it. Both were waving back and forth. I got up to look closer and found the snakes attached to the back ends of 2 adolescent possums! My cousin Jack jumps up and grabs a shovel and was holding it above them, but waiting before he swung it.

I told him not to worry, that the strwaberries would grow back, and with that re-assurance, he started a smackin!! There was a wild screeching sound and the thumps of shovel on the ground and clanging as it bounced off my brick border, and I heard one of em go screeching off into the night. I found one fatality, and the other never came back, so I guess he got it too. It was one of the funniest things I've seen. Him just a whacking away at the strawberries. He got so carried away with a smackin' that he even broke a brick in half!

Juicy Fruit. Chew a bit of it, and put it in their hole. It stops their digestion and they die in a couple weeks or so. Get em before they have babies, they have 6-10 of em I've read. After you get rid of em, buy that bottled coyote urine and put it around the border of your property to try and keep the others out.

Thanks! I have read that; but can you believe I'm having trouble finding that gum?
I ordered some Castor Oil today. Which, I've read, mixed with dish soap and urine, is supposed to make them run.
I'm still looking for Juicy Fruit gum though... :)

Thats really a bummer to even have to deal with gophers, after waiting for winter to end, so that things start growing again. What's next....? I'm glad we don't have those things. I hope you find an easy, and inexpensive solution.

If you seen the neighbors across the street from me, you'd have a heartattack. It looks like he's breeding the damn things. I probably got 50 in my yard. What Im going to do is go down to the local hardware, and get some chicken wire, and make them into a pot like shape, and dig deep enough and put the banana in there. Then when it looks like some are getting nearby I'll either poison them, or do the gum trick. I haven't tried it but my coworker swears up and down it works. :/. Or you can try the gophinator thing. Where you set off little mini explosions down thier holes... >.>;

I have not been able to be active here for awhile. But I would like to share what I did, that has worked, <KNOCK WOOD> so far.

I always try to do Natural controls....

I read that rotten eggs = Gopher gas. So I put some eggs out in the Sun for several days. Dropped them in the Gopher holes and tapped the shell to break them. Then quickly covered the hole. The first time they came back in two weeks. Did it again, and have not seen evidence of them. :bananas_b

There are only three ways I know of taking care of gophers in your yard. Get a cat, buy two traps for every gopher, or a shovel with a lot of patience.

My neighbors yards are full of gopher mounds but those little menaces fear my yard. I have already finished off two this year that my cat pulled from their holes. She is quite a hunter but likes to play with them. When gophers are trapped above ground they tend to not know what to do.

If you can see movement in the mound and know the direction of the hole you can trap them by plunging the shovel though the hole.

Gophers don't care about sulfur dioxide. I have had them throw sulfur bombs out of the holes. Poison has only a limited effect, why would they eat it when they have all of your garden to munch on.

Or you can be like me, give up and do the garden in barrels... five acres... couple hundred gophers... ehh... ^_-. The two cats on the property can only eat so many of the fat little things.
