View Full Version : Getting annoyed with 'For Sale' and 'Auction' adds in the New Posts

Is there some way we can move the 'For Sale' and 'Auction' announcements out of the New Posts or Today's Posts areas??? I don't care anything about buying anything right now, and hate having to sift through a full page of adds looking through the new posts. Just my $.02 worth.
I'm not completely against the for sale and auction areas, but would just like to see them separated from posts. I realize they get the most traffic there, but how many folks are looking to buy something when they log in to this site? Besides, there is a 'Classifieds' button also! I may want to even buy or sell something one day, and I'll know exactly where to look.

I'm with ya on this one Bigdog, I'm planning on getting some new Bananas as well as other plants this year, but for me, it's still to early, do to weather concerns as we still have below freezing temps at night and only occasionally above during the day, I'ld like to see (one) new post for the sales and auctions to let me know something new has been added, but have all the new and the current stuff under that one thread which will lead you to the classified section.

I agree too. The classified listings take up a ton of room on the page and it's rather annoying to have to scroll all the way down the page to type your post. I'm not against them either...I think it's a great idea to sell stuff here. I just don't want to be bombarded with listings, and I feel like that's how it is right now.

I agree also.

I agree also. I have just been thinking there was a big jump in people selling stuff because its a new cool thing to try out. But yeah I would rather not see them when I just want to see new posts.

OK I worked a little magic.
Go here, scroll to the bottom, and you can select those forums you wish to exclude, then click save.

Jarred, could you add a hide option for the Listings at the bottom of each post? Honestly, I don't want to see all these listings when I'm going through a message and then scroll down to reply to it. Sorry if this seems to be picky. We really do appreciate all your hard work on this forum. You da man! :)

We were on the same page on that note, I was in there moving things around when you wrote that... check it now, they are below the reply box now so it should save some mileage on your mouse. Regards

That's much better, Jarred. Thank you very much. Could you still add the little hide option for them? That is, if it's not too much trouble.

Had you changed it and then ran the search right away, if there were no new posts, it would have given you a cache of your last search, and they may have still been there. The tool should work fine. Check to make sure you have all the sales forums selected. There are these "sales" forums that exist: banana plants for sale and auction, banana plants wanted, other plants for sale and auction, and other plants wanted. If you don't have all those selected that apply to your tastes, you may still see sales. I checked your settings and you don't have all them selected. Please look again and test later in the day after you change the setting, so you avoid the caching consideration I detailed above. Very glad to get this working, but as a tester, I want you to know the inner workings of it, for example the cache issue maybe helps explain what you noticed perhaps. Regards

The ads are no problem to me. I just ignore the ones that bears no interest to me. In a way, it's even entertaining to me to see different plants being listed for sale. If there is absolutely no interest from anyone, then that would be another matter. The fact that many are bidding or buying the items in the ads tells me that there are many people that are interested in them. To some, the timing for the ads may be poor, but others may not care, as evidenced by the number of people bidding or buying.
My personal feeling on buying anything at this time of year is that it would be pretty risky. Bencelest says he's willing to take the risk. There you see two differing opinions. It's an individual call. On the other hand, if someone out there has 5 Ae Ae's to sell at $50 a piece right now, would anyone bet against me if i were to say that it's be sold in 3 seconds?????
I don't think the New Posts list is that long either. My vote is to let it run the way it is.

Hey Jarred. Just wondering if you've added the collapse icons yet. If so, they aren't showing up. Thanks.

I disagree. Why would you want to see all the auction listings whenever scroll down to post a message or response? I don't personally want to be bombarded with advertisements (which is really what all these auction posts are) when I'm trying to read the board and respond to a post.

If you scroll down just to the "Post Reply" button level, or even "Post Quick Reply" button level, you need not go any further, thus ignoring the ads. Those are the buttons you need to reply, or post a message, anyway.

Thanks for all the comments everyone.
I've just now coded in the collapse icons.
The setting will stick with you as you visit other pages (till you clear your cookies of course).
Best regards!

Thanks a ton, Jarred. I just want this forum to be continue to be very nice and usable as it always has been. I don't intend to be negative or inappreciative...I hope everyone realizes this. Thank you for your hard work on the board.

I do not think scrolling down an inch or two more is such a bad or time consuming thing. People are selling plants, not male sexual enhancement pills.

Jarred, I like seeing the ads too, but I'm glad you thought of a win-win situation where people can toggle them away.

I also love the simplicity of the board without all the extras but I have to say, I'm very happy to have a board that doesn't have the incessant pop ups like the GW. GRRRR, I hate those things!!
Thanks Jarred! :bananas_b

And I am hours away to win a lady finger. I like the way it is. If I don't want to bid, I'd stop scrolling down. I am happy I did.

That's why I stopped posting there because of those pop ups and some other reasons. I used to be very active there.

Well, thanks to Jarred, now we don't have to scroll down an extra inch or two more. Never was a bad, or time-consuming issue. Just personal preference. Anyhow, it is great now! I don't see any adds at all anymore. It's a win-win!

I am confused.
I wanted to place a post for some plants that are just for "trade", not a sale or an auction, but was given a message that I didn;t have enough "credits" and would need to purchase some credits in order to post a "for trade" ad.
