Hello all! I just stopped by for some basic info on growing my banana plant indoors (I just have one, hopefully you won't hold that against me). Anyway I am a fish person, a dog person, a cat person, and I tend to have the thumb of death when it comes to terrestrial gardening. Put something in a fish tank and I can grow it until it comes out the top, but put it in dirt and I'm in trouble lol! Still I want a tropical paradise in my fishroom (the room where my banana plant lives) and I'm determined to make a go of it.

I live in San Diego, CA and my boyfriend and I have 5 dogs, 3 cats, a koi pond outside, and a ton of South African plants all around the property, including birds of paradise, a rubber tree (don't know what species but apparently the thing spews latex when it gets pruned) and a bunch of other subtropical trees and ferns we can't name. The koi pond has lilies and ferns all around it as well.

So, that's me. Pretty boring but I live in a zoo haha!

When I lived up north I dreamt of growing tropical plants; I did have a wonderfully huge south facing window where I grew a blooming snake plant (stinky sticky mess) and a fruiting Calamondin orange (yummy marmalade) but no bananas. Is there any way you could see your way to utilizing space beside by the koi pond or nestled among your ton of South African plants to plant your single musa? She'd be happier I suspect.

Welcome.

Welcome to bananas.org from another San Diegan.
Guess what? Our beautiful San Diego weather lets us grow banana plants outdoors in the ground.
And no, nobody will hold it against you that you only own one plant. Trust me (and I am talking out of experience), growing banana plants is like eating potato chips: you cannot have just one :) ( even though I prefer to eat my homegrown bananas over any potato chips).

Hi junebug, welcome to the org. Looking at your intro, I think you might be "nuts" enough to fit right in here.
