We are relatively new to El Paso. I came across Bananas.org when I initiated as search on whether we can grow bananas in El Paso, TX. Why not plant something that is ornamental as well as edible? As we both like bananas, they are a logical choice. So we are hoping to get some insights here as to best variety, care...etc. etc.

Some edible ornamentals I favor besides banana is Cereus peruvianus, Hylocereus, yuca, daylily, sweet potato, and Gynura procumbens. Cool site I'm getting my plants from is Catalog of banana trees and banana plants offered at Going Bananas (http://www.going-bananas.com/bananavarietycatalog.htm)
Hope you have as much fun as I am.

Welcome to the org. I hope you enjoy this fun , and informative site as much as I have.
I agree with JP that a Namwah is a good choice. I would add Orinoco to the list as a new grower, this plant is nearly bullet proof.

We are near Mesa and Sunland Park Dr. Love it here. Fort Bliss was my choice so we could retire here.

Welcome to the Banana Express. :nanerwaveytrain:
Just make sure they keep their feet wet! I remember what it was like driving through Van Horn and the alkali flats, so I know El Peso [sic] must be just as dry.

Welcome! I justed started growing bananas too.
I planted the Lady Fingers variety. It doesn't get as tall as some others, which makes it fit nicely in my small garden.
