This is my first experience with any kind of banana tree. We have just received three beautiful plants and I need to know when it is safe to plant them. We are on the line between zones 6a and 6b in southern illinois and and they will be planted in an area near our pool up again the fence. If I can figure out how to post a picture, I will show the area when they will be going.
Any additional info regarding compost, nutrients would be appreciated as well.

How big are they? I would not try to overwinter them in the ground in your zone until they are of good size. Here is a good post on how to do it.

Plant them in May after all risk of frost has past. Musa basjoo will be fine in the ground this upcoming winter 16/17 as long as it is adequately protected, nearly bulletproof.

Plant them deep enough that the entire corm won't freeze next winter. From your description of beautiful plants, they're apparently leafed out. So keep them potted and indoors or move in and out as temperatures allow until the risk of frost is past. As mentioned above, after growing in the ground all summer they'll be fine for overwintering in the ground this coming winter. Your fence should help shelter them from wind damage. Mine are in the open and some of the leaves get turned into fringe by the wind.

Thanks for your quick reply, they are about 24" tall. How do I post a picture that I uploaded to my gallery?

I am north of you a bit(Cleveland). I planted mine around may 20th last year. When I cut them down in October they were approximately 10ft. They all survived the winter. It was a mild one though. The fence will really help. Especially if it is on the west side of them.

Mary Sue-
In the future, in order to post a pic on here (it's really weird), you have to go to your gallery, click on the pic, copy the jibberish on the top line and then paste it into your post.
Hope this helps.
