I just installed a new feature called BananaBucks.
You earn BananaBucks for posting and replying to threads. You also earn for referrals and for other actions and interactions with the site (if you refer someone, have them give your username, not your real name, in the "referred by" field on the registration form). You can also donate them to others, use a banking and loan system, among other things. It's very robust, and the more you interact with the Bananas.org website, the more you earn. There are some things, such as picture uploads, and giving "thanks (http://www.bananas.org/f10/added-thanks-button-so-you-can-2650.html)", and saying "welcome (http://www.bananas.org/f10/welcome-new-members-bananas-org-3533.html)", that will be enabled as well. The system will be fine-tuned over the course of this week, and occasionally will be adjusted in the future as well. So if you think you should be earning for something, and your not, send me a message and I'll go over it with you and let you know what to expect, etc.
Basically the BananaBucks will enable you to do different things.
We're going to be launching an auction platform shortly and the points will enable you to get featured listings, for example.
It's a framework that allows us to do many many new things with the site and will offer a lot of fun interaction abilities.
BananaBucks will also be allowed to exchange for live banana plants.
I'll post more about this soon, such as eligibility requirements, rates, etc.
:twonanners:
I hope you enjoy this new feature, and use it well!
Yours truly,
Jarred

I also want everybody to know that I gave everyone the credit they deserve since the day they joined the site, so everyone already has the true worth they've earned - and didn't even know they were earning!

I have to say I think there could be some problems with this though. What I'm mostly concerned about is people scrounging for all kinds of pictures to upload to help raise there BananaBucks. In my opinion there's already to many random / off topic pictures being uploaded. It doesn't seam fair for someone to get BananaBucks for uploading pictures that don't have anything to do with plants. I know in a recent thread there was some controversy about this but it doesn't seam like anything has changed.

If bucks were only earned for uploading relevant pictures to the Banana Galleries (not the Members Galleries) and there was a quota + fee system for the member galleries, I believe it would be a triple-win situation.

*If*, Kinda going on what I said before about having a whole other gallery for "Other" pictures that wouldn't count toward such things but I don't think something like this is in effect.

Also, we're keeping better tabs now on the photos that make it onto the homepage.

We had an incentive program at work where we earned "Techno Bucks" for hitting production goals, safety, etc. We could use them for a day off or to buy stuff out of a catalogue. Our new owners took the program away after 10 years and smashed the moral:0491:. I was excited to see the same concept being used on here:banana-computer:. Great idea! I get my bucks back!:2559:

I would like it to be transparent but I do not want to encourage it to be abused. My dilemma is if I'll post the exact algorithm when its refined.
That said, I'm still making slight adjustments to it. The algorithm includes dozens upon dozens of equations.
:2738:
In a nutshell, you earn BananaBucks for posting new threads and for replying to threads. You also earn when your thread gets replies.
Here are some actions that cause you to earn:
Activity and frequency of using the site
Filling in profile fields and your profile picture
When you post
Your post size (this is capped at a low number to prevent abuse)
When your threads get replies by other members
When your threads get rated
Sending and receiving reputation
Sending private messages
When your profile gets viewed by other members
New & validated members that you refer that mention your username upon registration
Also know that if you post and then delete it, it negates the credit.
The exact formula uses a lot of math, multiplication at times, division at times, and decimals all the way down to hundredths at other times.
Some are worth a lot (such as referrals) and some are worth a little (such as the # of words in your posts).
This is not a complete list of all the triggers either, but I hope that it sheds some additional light on it for everyone.

Existing itrader feedback records will be migrated to the new classifieds system, no worries there. I posted about that here:
http://www.bananas.org/f10/auctions-classifieds-3673.html
True, though, it's a start! Looking forward to your stuff Taylor!
Since you asked, :), the next big thing thats in the works is a localized groups system that members can create and maintain, giving us the ability to create local arms of the Society. We'll also have a friend system where you can buddy up with your friends, something like the big social networking sites allow. These two things will be fantastic for us.
We will also bring in thread tagging and cross referencing abilities, similar to the "similar threads" feature that we currently have on some of the threads, but minus the artificial intelligence. You'll be able to tag a thread like "balbisiana" and effectively link the thread with all the other threads with the same tag.
Good times, this year will be an awesome growing season (so many people have so many new types of bananas!) and a lot of fun.

02-26-2008, 07:14 PM
That will be nice Jarred. You'll know since you have GMail, like you can star important emails and get back to people or look at it again?
And I understand the 'Friends' thing. I was wondering why we had "Group Memberships" on the right hand side of our profiles. It was all leading up to this, and if you ended up madking an expert group that would be on there too.
So on and so on, your work might never end...:rollerbananadone:

Thanks for the kind words Randy! To help clear up what they are for, if you ever go to post a classified ad, you will know :)
They will also be exchangeable for live plants. You can donate them to others or accept them as payment for your goods if you want. There are a ton of things we will be using them for, this is just the beginning. Other things we can do is have a lottery even or use them as awards for winning a contest in times of the year where sending a plant is not feasible. It will all be clear once we add more things that they will be used for, this thread is just basically to introduce the concept.

I changed the code last night, took me a while but I got it, so when you welcome someone and when you give thanks, it earns you banana bucks.
You earn more for welcoming someone than giving thanks (that can't really be abused much anyway). And you earn more for receiving a thanks than receiving a welcome (encourages good posts). If you reverse the action and remove your thanks or your welcome, the bucks get reversed as well.

OK, for example, when you do something that causes you to earn, then you reverse it (like post, then delete the post) - the negation calculation multiplies what you earned by what you are reduced with by 1.5. So if you earned 10 and you reversed it, you loose 15.
I just changed that though so it does not do that.
But its a powerful algorithm like I was explaining. :)

There was a slight bug in the code that was resolved, it involved negating the credit for joining, and multiplying that by the factor, when the joined member makes his first post and becomes upgraded into the posting members usergroup.
In other words, when you make your first post here, a lot of things happen (including giving you permission to use the private message system). The bug was reversing your join credit and multiplying that by the factor. I have patched it now and recalculated totals.

Some members have asked about banking. So let's now talk about the bank. :)
You must have 500 BananaBucks in your savings account in the bank to earn interest.
When you add BananaBucks to your savings account in the bank, your visible total to the other members decreases.
2% interest is calculated every 30 days.
There's a 2% transfer fee to move funds between your checking and savings.
Deposits transfer every midnight and there's a 1 day hold.
There's other small fees, like an early withdrawal fee of 5% if you cancel a pending deposit.
We're not using loans at the moment but we have the capability to turn it on one day.
xavierdlc61887
02-28-2008, 01:41 AM
so if i put 500 bananabucks i get a 2% interest rate....and then i pay another 2 percent interst to put it back my my bananabucks wallet??? so can we still be earning bananabucks to get that 2 percent to cash it out :D
mskitty38583

ok so in essence...the banana bucks are used like a checkbook and a savings account. that part i get. the part i dont get is how are they to be used? so to say if someone has a plant i want and they will trade it for nana bucks....i can transfer that amount of nana bucks to them? im kind of clueless in sparta again.

02-28-2008, 02:39 AM
Yes! You can donate to others. I just added a link next to where the BananaBucks total is displayed, that reads "Donate", that should make it easy.
Click that link to send the person some of your BananaBucks.
You can think of it as "Pay" or "Donate", because it's basically a transfer from you to them.

About the 2% charge for transfer into / out of savings. Suppose I transfer 1000 B$ into savings from checking. Will the additional 20 B$ be deducted from checking, or will my net deposit be 980 B$ ?
MediaHound
02-28-2008, 02:04 PM
Deducted from the deposit. You would end up with 980 in savings.
I have updated the verbiage (http://www.bananas.org/credits.php?do=banking):
Minimum savings of 500 BananaBucks required for 2% interest every 30 days.
Deposits require pending time of 1 days before interest accrues, or a 5% early withdrawal fee applies.
Maximum savings of Unlimited BananaBucks allowed.
Transaction fee of 2% applies on all transfers, deducted from the deposit amount.

Yes. In a few days I will release a new version of the auctions.
It's basically BETA at the moment, will be moving to GOLD soon and incorporating many new features that its lacking now, such as provisions for other types of payments, a shipping calculator, and other things to make it more intuitive. Some things may take longer than others, though.

Zac, no way would that have lowered your counts. You only loose credits when you donate them to others, when you buy something like an auction or a featured listing, or when you delete a post of yours, things like that. Changing your email address is not going to do it. Neither are thread subscriptions. You DO get B$ for filling out your profile, so if you cleared out some profile fields, that may have deducted some, but not nearly that many, profile fields only give you a few (single digits). I did re-run the calculations once since the system was launched, as there was a slight bug with it that I corrected and then recalculated. I would attribute it to that. Regards

Yes. In a few days I will release a new version of the auctions.
It's basically BETA at the moment, will be moving to ALPHA soon and incorporating many new features that its lacking now, such as provisions for other types of payments, a shipping calculator, and other things to make it more intuitive. Some things may take longer than others, though.
Doesn't alpha come before beta? :P
One thing, Now if someone is charging bananabucks for something there is no way to tell on the main classifieds page. It just looks like someone is charging a crazy amount. Would there be some way to differentiate the two? Well I know there would be a way but think something like that would work?
MediaHound

Beta is actually the first release of software.
I should have said we'll consider it GOLD when it's refined, I fixed the post.
To add to what I mentioned a couple posts up, if the seller is only accepting BananaBucks, it must be very clear in the listing.
I will be adding provisions and modifying the script so it's easy to tell the difference from that page and the other pages and bits where the listing appears.

Maybe you can put in a check box for B$ or real cash (or both), as someone lists their auction, that'll flag a B$ icon in the listings for auctions that accept them.
:2738: :0493: :banana-computer:
And what about input without words? Will that earn B$?

Quote tags and such type of input that gets parsed does not count towards post size total. The post size credit is very small so it's not abused anyway. Steelviper (Mark) posts a lot with just smileys, other times words, has been for years. He's not milking B$ :)

Sorry, but I haven't gone through all of the posts. The wiki often gets ignored and I am wondering if B$ are generated from activity there. I am not about milking anything, but I have spent some time posting things to the wiki and wish more folks would do so. A while back someone told me I could post their photo to the wiki but I wish they just did it themself, but I did it because I thought it would help. The wiki is a wonderful resource and I am just wondering if B$ might be helpful in motivating greater participation there.

Brent, you must be a moron to open yourself up to a question like that! ;)
It was confusing to me at first but once I figured it out it wasn't hard to do. One thing that was confusing is that the edit like for a section isn't always real obvious, but you should look directly to the right of the title for a section (sometimes I've clicked at the bottom of the section which was really the top of the next section).
For adding your map you enter YOUR information in right below another user and your information would look exactly like this:
29.532839863453397, -95.29266357421875, [[User:bananaman88]]
(I took your coordinates from your information when I clicked on "Find me on the map!" link under your name on the post above.)
It's much easier to go into each cultivar you grow and do that all at the same time so you can just paste the same information into each wiki page.
If you have your photos in your gallery, it is easy to post them to the wiki. When you view your photo in your gallery you will see that it has the code below it for three different uses. The third one is the code to be used for the wiki.
I think Jarred has posted this information before but maybe it should be placed as a "sticky" somewhere.
Can I please get triple B$ for this post??? lol
Good luck you former moron! ;)

A direct connection to the plants that we have listed on our profiles to the "Members growing this plant" map would be nice. Meaning, we (IBS) have a list of bananas that we can click on that become added to the list on our profile (just like adding a smilie to a post, it is added with a click) and then automatically get added to the Wiki Map for that species/variety; therefore, a step is eliminated for us members, the wiki is actually up to date, and it will make adding your species and varieties a priority to people because Jarred can make it worth some B$.
Yall follow me? :) Have I lost you?
I think this would be great because people add them to their profiles, but won't bother with the Wiki as it is complicated.
If you want this to get even more involved, split the "Bananas I Grow" section into "Bananas I Grow" and "Bananas I've Grown" as a few members have already done that, like I have. The purpose is for people to see it and ask our experiences, whether we still have it or not. And only the "Bananas I Grow" would automatically be added to the map/list in the Wiki, and "Bananas I've Grown" could just be present in the profile.
Jarred, possible? It might have to be changed to a list if you can not link our profiles to a Google-sponsored map.

After 30 days, it will happen. To check, visit this link:
http://www.bananas.org/credits.php?do=banking
At the top of that section, you will see your checking total and your savings total.
Compare your savings total with your transaction log towards the bottom of that page, and you'll see that once you reconcile the totals, exactly how much interest has calculated for you.
Interest is given at 30 days, so if it's not exactly 30 yet, know that it will happen then.

The best part is picking a recipe of some beer you like and making yourself. You don't have to pay a brewery 1/2 way around the world to make it and ship it to you. The summer ale that I'm drinking now is around $.35 per 16oz. glass. :bananas_b

Unless you use a hefeweizen yeast, its suppose to make banana and clove easters and phenals flavors. How much is your choice by controling the temperature.
I just finished a California Common and I have a hefeweizen carbonating right now. Next I think I will make a pale ale. Price of grain has gone through the roof though and hops are expensive now too.
$0.35 per 160z glass is a great price. You must have a great homebrew store near you. I live in a pretty small town so I have to take what I can get. No way can I make it for that cheap and I get my bags of base malt in 55 lb sacks. Price of grain went from $55/55lbs to $75/55lb bag. I am not doing it for the cost though, its a hobbie. It runs me about $0.60/bottle not counting propane and water, but I am sure they are not the bulk of the cost. I just started growing Kent Goldings and Hallertauer so I hope to get my hop cost down. Maybe I will start reusing yeast. I don't really have a place to store it right now. If I can get those costs down I am down to about $.30/bottle.

I just started growing my own hops as the price went up to $4.75 for 2 oz. of pelletized. I'm paying about $1 a pound for liquid malt extract. I don't have the time for all grain, and it'd cost about the same per pound, but I'd have to use more per batch, so it'd cost me more $$ to go all grain.

Ouch! That's a hefty jump in grain costs. I harvest my yeast for about 5 generations or so. Best is to top crop, but not always feasible with a carboy, in which case I pull it outta the secondary after kegging. I picked up a 15 gallon conical and the lid is big enough now for top cropping... I get partial bottles of propane for free from my work, so there's no cost there, and my water bill is the same if I use 5 gallons of 500 gallons of water. The only way for me to drop my cost more than it is already is to find extract for less than $1 a pound, and reuse my yeast more than 5 times.
I have a summer ale in the kegerator that I used a Nugget hop for bittering, and Hallertauer for the flavor and aroma. I'm about to brew a Red Rye, and I need to make more Oatmeal Stout! :nanadrink:
Take care!

Well, I've been getting my interest on schedule but that date field is funny. Software gurus here know about the program bug where you supply the pointer value instead of the stored value -- often with the symptom of seemingly random values displayed.

hello and welcome to the org! nana bucks can be used to "buy classified ad space" and you can use them to"buy" things for your profile. we also use them in place of real money to "buy" plants from other members. you get thm for reading and responding to post by members. you can also get them by posting pics.

you can use the nana bucks to "buy" plants. ok example: i bought 18 foxtail palm seeds from a member here for 75 nana bucks. i transfered the nanabucks to their account and i got the palm seeds.

No big deal but for some reason the system only shows 3905 b/b when I count 4,305.
I just added them all twice and got the same total.

Hi Scot,
You have some pending still:
Pending 100 BananaBucks since Today
Pending 300 BananaBucks since Yesterday
Let your deposits clear and the total will be correct.
Regarding dates that aren't appearing properly that some people raised, I will fix this.

Jarred, I thought of a good use for banana bucks. Perhaps some could be redeemed to allow for storage of more messages in our PM boxes. I often refer back to them and while I try to keep it clear of stuff I no longer need, I find that I am nearly half full.
Just a thought.

I just seen we rolled over with the BB bank, we get 2% interest, which is great. I know it happed but I do not know how much I got. I know I can use a calculator but it would be so much better for me if the interest looks like a line item under the transaction log.

You acquire them by visiting the site and posting or uploading pictures etc. They have no cash value. You can use them to post in the classified section or buy custom colors/font for your user name. Perhaps Jarred the owner of this site will come up with a way to spend them, maybe a virtual banana casino or something like that.

So far, the best application of banana bucks is paying for a Classified ad. The owner of this site (MediaHound) has expressed interest in some games, etc. but his wife is expecting their first born. So I think we might have to wait until all the children have been born and raised before he has time for such an adventure! I'm sure MsKitty will agree in the "been there, done that" department.

A very good question, Kom. What you need to do is go to the first screen of this site and click on "Main Banana Discussions" at the top of the list.
Then scroll down to near the bottom of the screen and look for the "New Thread" button. Click on that.
Then type in a title for your question.
In the lower box, explain what you want to learn.
Then click on the "Submit New Thread" button.
That is the place to ask questions like that. Try it. If you need more help, just ask :).
or you can use them between members (if they agree) as "money" for nanas or other plants.

What makes this forum great and unique, is the fact that the trades are in form of either barter or for no compensation at all.
A member to member. Everyone needs help sometimes and if it is within certain acceptable borderlines, then better. ;)
Whenever money, bucks or banana bucks starts coming into the way, it's worse and worse...

Hi Jack :) ! It may surprise you to know that I've already GIVEN away all my spare Blue Java Banana pups this season. I have no money or banana bucks to show for it - just a Great feeling! I've also GIVEN away 1 Robert Young Bamboo starter plant & have bartered 2 more. I've got other barters & giveaways in the works.
In fact, the only people I exchanged money with for plants, in the past 3 years, have been the commercial nurseries.
I just think that, for those who can afford imaginary nanner-bucks, it might be fun - but I'm always thinking of others, too :).
But you are absolutely right: Banana Bucks (or any other bucks) should never become more important than people. Thanx :) !
