View Full Version : Probably a dumb question

Hi to everyone, I'm new to this forum, wish I had discovered it earlier.

I just got hit with a really nasty "freeze event" which has lasted at two days, with lows in the low teens and highs in the mid thirties. In anticipation of this freeze, I wrapped my bananas in either burlap and or insulated air-conditioning duct (rather expensive, I did this last year). Anyway, when I went out this afternoon to check for damage, I felt to see of the p-stems were still firm -- and they were firm all right, but only because they were frozen! So here is the dumb question: will the p-stems spring back from this freeze, or are they a loss? And, will frozen p-stems be an impediment to any emerging bananas next spring? That is, should I cut them down now? Thanks in advance.

Welcome jimbiz! :drum:
Well, I'd be dumbfounded. Perhaps you will be the only one to know. The only hard freeze that I know around here was during 1991 when temp went down to record of 12 deg F low. Only the California Gold banana sprang back and fruited. The rest sprang back but did not fruit that year. All pseudostems were rotted down to the ground during our deep freeze. Perhaps you'll do better with your winter protection.
