You have my sympathy Celine. Yesterday all I had left for snow was in the shade where I had piled the shoveled snow last winter.
Last night it was still above freezing with big fluffy snowflakes melting on contact with the ground.
It is still snowing now(3 1/2") and we are adding about 1/2" per hour.

do you really want to test the hardiness and strength of a basjoo? plant it in the yard and have a tornado pass about 10 miles from your house. talk about hold your breath! the leaves held up very well being the winds were (here in sparta) about 45-50 mls an hour. the 2 basjoos were planted in the yard wednesday, so my concern was GREAT! so the basjoo has my vote.

Nice and cool here today 81f/27c and the wind that has shredded my taller nanas is less too. Luckily the palm hedges and tall gingers give some wind protection but it has been so dry! Last year by now we had 40 inches of rain and this year only 24.2 inches. Had to water yesterday and as the water pressure was low, that meant moving the hoses a gazillion times.
Visitors and kitesurfers love this weather though so at least someone is happy!

Yeah, well the Southern climate here is seriously screwed up, according to the locals. My landlady is in her 80's and she tells me that it has NEVER been this cold in April in her lifetime, nor has it rained this much. Ecuador is getting what has been called the wettest and coldest year on record; even the active volcanoes are getting SNOWED ON, and the south of Quito got a hailstorm that dumped 6 inches on the ground and closed the highways.
The dry season should have been underway weeks ago, but still it rains, and still it floods, and we've lost a number of people to it, not to mention the lowland crops of rice, soy, and oats; the pineapple crop is threatened, and the watermelons failed at the beginning of the rains. Flooding wiped out the shrimp crop as well.
All this extra moisture means that the commercial banana growers are facing increased incidence of Sikatoga and oher fungal blights, so we might lose the Cavendishes. That would just about kill Ecuador; it's our primary export. Luckily, some of the big plantations have been starting to permaculture and produce coffee and papayas as well; this seems to up the fungal resistance of the nanners.
This morning I'm looking out over a city that's buried in clouds, and it's about 5 C, which is colder than Quito is ever supposed to get. I suppose that later when I can see the top of the volcano, it will have snow. I'm worried about my hibiscus plants and my big barrel-stemmed Plantain, since it goes all droopy and has dropped leaves when it gets like this.

Hard to ask for a better Spring/April. Mostly 60s and 70s for the past two weeks with sun just about everyday. Today's high was 87 degrees! Very dry here though. There are even reports of brush fires in the more rural parts of my area.
The forecast for all of next week has temperatures in the 70s. Most days are sunny too.
Seriously, I'd like to see this April repeated every year! Just add a couple more rainy days so I don't have worry about watering the plants.
Overall, I'd say this has been a super spring!

It was -12*C/10*F last night with a 20 mph wind. It has been snowing all day and is forecast to dump about 2 1/2 feet on us by next Saturday before the temps finally get back to freezing. We came close to setting record low yesterday and are forecast to set a record low on Friday. I guess that we had summer already and are getting winter again.

Most people around here do not put plants in the ground until the last week of May. I was going to put my Glads and Cannas in the ground until I saw the extended forecast. I did take down my unheated palm shelter and took the lid off of my heated palm shelter. The lid is back on and so is the heat. My experiments in the unheated shelter appeared to be all dead as the temperatures reached -40* last winter.
I am pretty sure that I won't lose most of the 1400 tulips that my wife and I put in last fall. They had broken through the surface. The ground temperature and the snow cover seems to have kept them pretty close to freezing.
The good news is that we will get about a foot of snow in total. It is supposed to clear off tonight. That will mean day time temperatures close to freezing and night time temps in the range of -15 to -18*C/0 to 5*F.
We have been setting all time records most days for cold temperatures.
My Living Room gets more cluttered every day as my bananas keep growing. I should be able to start putting them out days in the first week of May.
The only thing that really pisses me off is the wind. I shoveled 10" - 18" snow drifts yesterday and this morning the sidewalks have drifted back in and I can't even see where I shoveled. I am going to let the snow in the driveway melt. Thank goodness for 4 wheel drive.

Allen - hats off to you for growing nanas under such adverse conditions. But wait til your tulips some out!!!! Tulip envy here!
Here on the north coast the weather is perfect, but they had a tornado go through the centre of the island down the Cibao valley on Sunday that killed 1, injured about 19 and caused huge losses to the banana, plantain and rice crops - just when they were recovering from hurricanes Noel and Olga. We heard thunder with a clear sky, and later saw black, black clouds but didn't realise what was happening.
Oh well - tings happen in de islands! And only one month until the start of the hurricane season on June 1!!!!
If anyone is interested - these are the 2 best links for our weather although they don't become active until June 1, but I am a hurricane correspondent for the Dominican Republic on stormcarib.

Come for a visit, stay for a lifetime. Nanners grow year-round here! And you'd probably be wanting your Tiki Hut on the beach, where it tops out around 40*C but only goes down to about 18 overnight. Here in the highlands the nights are a touch chillly (6-8*C in the rainy season.)
Ah well, today is shaping up to be nice. It poured last night, so it's cool now, but the sun has only been up about an hour and since it's clearish it will be nice and hot.

The "merry month of May" has brought a mix of weather here in San Diego CA and apparently throughout north America. Here we started with 2 weeks of unusually warm weather and now we are concluding a week of cool weather (68 F, 20 C) that has included rain showers. So far it has been positive for most crops, although we'll need to have at least 90 days with warm midday temperatures (86 F, 30 C) between now and the end of summer to ripen seasonal tropical fruits such as mangos, sapotes, etc.

It's still cold in Seattle. Mornings this past work week still in the upper 30s(3°C). 2PM maybe 65°F(18°C). Still have to wear a lined raincoat and scarf for the 12 block walk from the parking lot to the office. Plus, umbrella if it's raining.
Last weekend was an exception. Thursday the temps were in the low 70s(20s), Friday a whopping 92°F(33°C)! Saturday/Sunday back to the low 70s, Monday was in low 60s.
That Thursday evening, 5/16, I looked at my CA Gold's leaves, and the emerging leaf that been trying to push out the last 10 months, was about 2" long, still tucked in partially inside the previous leaf's petiole. Friday afternoon, 5/17, the thing had pushed out 10", but was still unfurled. Yesterday 5/23, it was completely out and unfurled, looking very pale, 20" long. Here's what it looks like today:

I had to switch on the vent to open manually because the limit switch of the ridge vent crapped out 8 years ago. And I couldn't find a replacement for it because my greenhouse manufacturer had gone out of business. A few years ago, I found a company that took over service issues of Lord & Burnham products and they are now available again. With the ridge vent open, the greenhouse is a "cool" 84°F (29°C).

Looks great, Daen! (no pun intended) For us, this is probably the coldest May we've had in years. With summer coming in a few weeks, we just might skip spring altogether.
But o-o-o-oooh! I would hate to make a decision later on when the plants outgrow some of those beautiful pottery, whether to smash the pot or risk cutting into some roots to transplant the plant into a larger pot. I'm already having that dilemma right now, whether to plant some favorite plants into some nice pots but hate the thought that I might have to smash the pots when the plants over grow them. And they're not even as nice as your pots!

At 10am, its 95 F (35 C) outside, what we call "fire weather". A high-pressure zone in the deserts several hundred miles east of here is reversing the normal cool westerly flow off the ocean and heating up the southern coastal counties. I wonder where the fire will start.

It started in the Vista-Oceanside area. The smoke plumes are so large that it looks just a few miles away -- in reality it is 20 miles to the NNW.

We have torrential rain here on and off as a spin-off from hurricane Omar, but not as bad as St Thomas in the USVI where they had nearly three inches in an hour at midday today. The eye is due to pass directly over them tonight. We had 3.5 inches last night and the yard is SOGGY as we have had thunderstorms every night this week - 5 inches in 5 days. But you can see the bananas growing and almost hear them shlurping that rain up - temps very cool at 77f/25c.

Torrential rain every night this week (mind you I'm glad it's at night) - Tuesday night 3.4 inches in 3 hours and wind so strong that it blew over a dc with fruit in a protected area. Cayman Islands are having the same weather but when I look at the satellite images - nada!! And now it is pouring again - driving so hard that the spray reached me in the kitchen and I had to scream for the other half to do something. Quickly!! Last nights rain brought in a beautiful black tarantula about 7 inches across, but as I didn't want him walking over my feet in the night, I scooped him up in a plastic bowl and found a dry place outside for him. The wildlife here can be very much part of the family - snakes living in the garden walls, rats in the generator house, mice in the garage and tarantulas strolling down the hall - gals who scream at the sight of a worm have a hard time here!! And the birds!! All I can say is that I am so lucky.

O.K., our "rainy" season has started here in San Diego, CA. We will receive about 7 inches (18 cm) between now and the end of March. Then we might get another 1/2 cm between April and this time next year. :ha:
Many natives to this area feel that 1/4 inch is a big rain storm and find it annoying. In the '80s I lived in McKinleyville CA where it would rain 7 inches in one day during the winter season. Now that's rain!

Hey Lorax - we haven't had a good earthquake here since the 6.4 one of about 2003 ( too lazy to look it up!) Lots of tiddlers at about 3 and they had a 5 recently down south. The thing that fascinates me about the bigger ones, is how the noise precedes the quake. Every time we go across the mountains to Santiago, we check on the tectonic plate slippage by the movement of the white lines on the road - left, right, up, down - keep those little quakes coming!!
lorax
11-27-2008, 10:07 AM
We don't count anything less than 4.5 - they're so frequent. I won the last set of bets on the 6.8 in Morona Santiago last month.
You're right - the big ones make a really nifty noise.

Sheesh Lorax! No more rain for us please - the garden has been a bog for the last 3 months and the visitors are asking where the hot sun is! But the last 3 days have been beautiful.
Sorry to hear about your flooding - it is very hard to deal with as we know here to our cost!!
Everyone else - hey! spring MUST be just around the corner - it is nearly April after all.

Patty, a lot of it depends upon where the Bermuda high is sitting or moving, and intensity. On the east coast that pattern sometimes sets up early in the season.:2239:

Lorax, I'm very concerned for all of you. When a crater lake breaches, it can happen on a less-durable wall. The resulting erosion allows a tremendous amount of water to drain from these deep lakes.

I'm not in that city, thankfully (I'm in Quito, Puyo, and Manabi, usually). If Lago Yaguarcocha goes, though, the city of Ibarra is toast, and probably also the towns of El Chota and Los Valles. Thankfully Otavalo is one valley over so it wont be lost. However, there's almost no chance of it breaching a weak wall - it's an indented blast crater that created its own valley (one of the larger explosive dasitic explosions of Volcan Imbabura created it several million years ago.) It would be a really amazing feat to break a crater wall, as they're all uniformly several thousand feet thick of hard basalt.
I'd be more concerned if there was a warning out for Lago Cuicocha or Lago Quilotoa, which are elevated crater lakes.
Richard
03-29-2009, 10:47 PM
There are craters in the western US and elsewhere with one side composed of pumice grains, etc. glued together with volcanic "varnish". Over time this becomes the lower wall, with the remaining sides composed of iron and copper igneous slag. When the crater becomes full and breaches, the flow on the weak side is enough to tear out the already degraded varnish and a good portion of the lake drains.

Yes, please send it to Las Vegas. About 3 inches per week will do nicely thank you. Of course, Vegas will flood like crazy, but it needs to be flushed anyhow.

I've never examined the geology of Upper Klamath Lake, but the current terrain and the past vulcanism are suspicious. However, there are relics in the Great Basin and regions to the south, left over from an epoch of much wetter climate.

Actually, the April Fool comes from a Medieval festival where the village fool was elected king for a day. Traditionally it was held somewhere in the month of April (depending on weather in the specific villages where it was celebrated), but it got formalized around the time of Queen Elizabeth I.

Good thing I checked. I'm sure if it EVER warms up all will be ok.

Mitchel, it's been so cold & gloomy I noticed my favorite 'famous' pup is not doing anything.
When I pot a pup that's fresh dug from my own yard I don't expect to see growth for a month or longer. Usually there is some initial growth from stored energy but once the corm realizes it's been cut and transplanted they stop growing and try to make new roots to power up the corm again before pushing new leaves. We all have our ways but as I've said in other posts I only water freshly potted pups once, and then I wait to see new growth around the 30 day mark before watering again or planting out in the ground. Of course this works for me in my zone in spring/summer but maybe not in an arid or really humid zone.

42 degrees cold at 12:48 AM!
My baby bananas are cuddled under a U-Haul blanket pad:bed:--that should give them some protection from the cold.
first cold night of the fall here.
Not good! Hurricane warning! We are dead center of projections. My biggest concern is the citrus trees--loaded with fruit to the point of almost breaking limbs from the weight of fruit. I am worried that the winds will break a lot of limbs and strip fruit. I have tried to stake and tie branches as much as possible, but I am sure there will be some damage.
Pecan tree will be the next biggest problem--it too is loaded and just starting to drop nuts, but many are still in solid green husk. Likely to get some broken limbs there.
Bananas in containers, I can lay down, but I wonder if I should cut leaves from the inground pstems to prevent breakage of larger plants. Any suggestions?

Good news is that they have downgraded the storm--it is no longer expected to hit as a minimal hurricane--just a tropical storm. I staked and tied the citrus trees and they are not moving at all in the wind. So far, this looks like just a rain event.
Lorax, I wish I could send you this rain--we are already a foot over normal and this one rain will probably exceed the normal rain for Nov by itself.

We had about 5 inches in one day back in October. Ruined an alfalfa crop I had in windrows. We got $40/ton instead of $135 and harvesting costs are about $36. That was the most we've had here in one day as far as I can remember. It happened to be a Monday, my busy chestnut shipping day, so it was very miserable and won't be forgotten for quite a while.

Couple inches of snow Sat nite into Sunday
We had a wet summer that ruined a lot of crops down here--sweet potatoes rotted, peanut harvest was difficult, soybeans went bad on the stalk before they could be harvested--many acres were just left in the field, some were harvested for use as animal feed. We are now back in the 70s for highs and more rain predicted for most of the week.

The showers here are over for until the end of the week, giving us 1.3 inches for the day.
