When I lived in NC I was driven out of my house cause of ice storm power failures. Three times in 12 years. Lucky there was a hotel nearby that allowed dogs in the room. I enjoyed Charlotte --- but give me S FL anytime. Miss my Piedmont bbq and eastern NC vinegar bbq too.

We're finally getting some rain too. There is a good chance of rain all weekend. Maybe that high pressure system that has been sitting over the Pacific for the last 13 months and depriving us of precipitation is finally going away.

Yes, I was watching the system come down through California. It looked like most places it dumped a 1/4 inch or more. But as happens many times, it split up coming into the Los Angeles area with about half of it heading eastward and another portion heading south along the coast, breaking up as it came. In my area it was only a foliar feed. Perhaps there will be more between now and April. So far the precipitation in my area since 9/1/2013 is 1.6 inches. :0493:

We've been having overnight sprinkles of less than 1mm with temperatures in the 50's, followed by warmer days with low humidity and temperatures around 70F. This sort of weather is perfect for a massive breeding of slugs, snails, and nuisance insects. It's time to get out the Sluggo (http://www.cpsagu.com/Regions/West/pdf/Sluggo%20flyer%203.02Scroll.pdf) and Green Light Fruit Tree Spray (http://www.scotts.com/smg/goprod/green-light-fruit-tree-spray/prod10780016/) and knock 'em down!

A very large moisture system is moving into the area. It's currently about 50 miles offshore and the party (rainfall) is expected to start about midnight. We could get our entire annual rainfall (7 inches) over the next few days.
Most of our municipal water supply is not local. It comes from both the Colorado River watershed and central CA. The former is doing fine but the latter is currently at about 35%. That's bad news for California's agricultural belt. For us, it means about 70% of "full" levels. We've been getting by on 80% for a number of years now.

It was laying on my garage roof, so kind of propped...I usually prop as soon as I see the first hand of bananas, but they were just not there yet. Has anybody ever transplanted a banana plant that had been blown over? It blocks my front door right now and has to go somewhere, but the question is if "somewhere" is the compost pile or to give it a try to replant at a different spot.

Can you tilt it up and back into place so you don't have to disturb the roots as much as you would if you transplanted it? Whatever the case, it's worth a shot to keep it going -- Namwah are tough plants.

Thanks. Some roots did, but I can certainly top up with cow manure or a wheel barrow of my chickens crap. Normally I would be hesitant to do that because of the higher N component which will not do anything to the plant anymore because it will not grow any more new leaves, but I have nothing to loose and if nothing else, it might help to get new pups (with a teaspoon of Azomite ;) )

Those of us in southern California are reeling with "Santa Ana" conditions. The wind has been blowing steady off the inland desert states (Nevada, Arizona) for a day and a half now. Humidity has been below 15% for the duration. At midnight today it was 70F, rose quickly to 90F with sunlight and peaked at 95F. Now after sunset it is back to 75F at 10pm with humidity around 10%. Those dry winds ... tomorrow will be a full watering day.

If it broke off well above the graft then there is no reason to plant a new tree.
Also, in your location most perennials can be safely planted 10 months out of the year.

The nice part down here in San Diego is the precipitation is spread out over 24 or so hours and sinking in most places. There are areas of past fires etc. that have flash flood danger and it is always a cautionary time out in the desert. But overall, I'm looking forward to it.

Can't find a record?
When weather observation stations are moved, they typically take on a new name and new identification. This is necessary for ensuring the accuracy and validity of historical records. However, it also can make it difficult to find records for your location, since each city could have multiple stations with different periods of record, in different locations. Record Extremes contains all historical records from the National Climatic Data Center, and are shown on a "station ID" basis. A missing record means that in that station's lifetime, it didn't have the opportunity to record the location's record extreme.

Hot hot hot!!! High of 92F every day since I got back from Istanbul and Mykonos. Very little rain. The watering system kept everything alive including the lawn.
And the critters got some of my Pickering, Sweet Tart and Cogshall mangos. They will be dealt with soon!
And unlike Nick I had a contractor mow the lawn while I was gone. Bunch of dead grass but not a problem.

For several weeks finally a normal summer upper 90's-100's. Video recorded a funnel cloud move around our neighborhood close by our house! We prayed and it went away.
Hotter than Hades here and no relief in sight. Oh wait, everyday there are lots of huge TSs predicted but that's a lie. Humid but no rain.
What's even funnier is that radar--current radar--doesn't show rain that's actually happening. Yet sometimes it can be raining here and current radar shows the skies clear. Very odd to me. I thought DC predictions were flaky; Central FL ones have those beat hands down.

Hi every body haven't posted in a long time but came up with a new problem for me. Hope you can help? Live in central Florida along the Atlantic coast. During the month of July we had almost no rain (<.02in). We have 60 Banana trees of different varieties, many of them are in fruit, we water and fertilize to support them. Then in Aug it began to rain we got about 7 inches of rain in the first ten (10) days August. During this time we have had three mature Ice cream trees in full fruit collapse up near their top. The trunk looks rather grey but the leaves are still green.
Is it an over abundance of water? They do not stand in water. The other surrounding trees do not seem to be affected. I know its too late for theses trees. These trees are 25 feet tall and loaded with fruit its a shame. I going let hang ad see what happens
