Thanks for that blast from the past, Tony. Put a smirk on my face.

No heat here today either. "June gloom" all day. We did have some nice sun and warmth this weekend, though it was still too cold for Nick, a high of only 76. :ha:

How are you doing with the rain? We have gotten over 14 inches in the last two weeks but it was easy rain over long periods. The news media had some terrible looking scenes of the flooding and damage. Be careful.

It still may go elsewhere and we will have to wait to see after it gets past cuba for more precise determinations. For me highwinds could damage my fruit trees and I will have to prune them to keep them from blowing down.

Well - good luck and stay safe. It has just been passing us last night and today about 150 miles away, and although it is BIG, it is kinda wimpy and never made the projected hurricane .- we didn't even need to bring in the patio furniture. Having said that - the wind is getting up a bit now that we are in the NE quadrant and we will probably get a bit more rain. The kids are out surfing!

It might be a wimpy storm, but I have several hundred maybe even thousands of platanos on the ground. A lot of rain and a little wind is not a great combo. This is a good time to think of some new experiments, I have an ample supply of large p-stems and standing them back up is not an option.

Sorry to hear about your losses Keith - sometimes the lie of the land channels the wind where you don't want it, and compared to a hurricane, this was not bad. We have had a very windy afternoon but my Sabas are still upright with huge bunches on them - whether they will last the night, I don't know. We have the mountains at our back which helps. Which side of PR are you - N,S,E or W? We are on the north coast of the DR.

Thanks Cassie,
I'm on the top of a mountain on the SE coast with a beautful ocean view, so I accept the bad with the good. I go into hurricane season expecting a 100 % loss, so anything less than a complete loss is a windfall.
Another good thing about ARH is you can haverst at the 40 day mark if needed, 20-24 oz fruit are still respectable.
The mountains to your south are also very beautiful and a good place to find amber. I think you are in Sosua.

island cassie
08-24-2012, 04:32 PM
We are down the coast to the east from Sosua and yes - we can pick up amber from the beach which is down the road! And our Sabas are good to use if the wind blows them down - I had been thinking of cutting them down anyway. Keep in touch neighbour!:waving:

I never considered finding amber at the beach, the rivers can bring it from the mountains to the ocean. Amber being fairly light should easily wash up on the shore. How is the quality of the amber affected by the ocean or the sand ?

island cassie
08-24-2012, 09:03 PM
Amber floats but our beach is some way from a river mouth, so we only get small pieces. I don't know if the quality is affected by being in the sea as I really don't care for it enough to have found out. I know that a lot is mined here but isn't most of the Baltic amber found washed up on the beach?

We were under tornado warning most of the day earlier. Tornados damaged 30 homes in Vero and ripped the roof off one in Palm City. Too close to home. The outer band ribbon ran in line with the same cities from Miami up to Sebastian for like 7 hours of non stop rain and lightning. Lightning strikes in the hundreds. Many areas have severe flooding in homes and businesses for the first time ever. Amazing that the power or TV cable never cut out thrououghout it all. One of my favorite news pics was of a neighborhood in the Acerage where the kids and adults are playing in the flood water running and floating in inner tubes ---- in an area with only septic tanks. Flooded out septic tanks!!! Palooshun playground!!!

The smaller one of the Ae Ae cracked all of its leaves at the pstem but is still upright. Might grow back ok. Everything else was undamaged. BTW – found a new flower on the D Brazilian when tieing them up. That’s a total of 4 bunches hanging now. Finally stopped raining this evening!

Stay safe everyone and I hope your properties are ok. As for bananas - they can stand a lot of water and when we had 11 inches of rain in 24 hours - there was standing water for quite a while and they were fine. I think that if the temperature is warm, they can cope. We even have an Orito growing where the swimming pool filter pumps out so that is always damp to say the least. Good luck all!!

Yes, I'm pretty much exactly on the other side of the state on the S.W. Coast. This is an early cold front... might have wind chills in the 20s here with ambient temps in the 30s. Hope there is a lot of wind to keep the frost away. Only one night of actual cold weather though.

Winter has finally arrived. And with a vengeance. Plenty of rain and cold temps. The bananas are surviving, but don't seem to be enjoying it. Tiny brown dots are appearing on the p-stems and petioles of the plants. I'm guessing this is a result of the cold. Absolutely no growth on Ice Cream (Tall Namwah) and Mysore, and the flower bud on Raja Puri has slowed to a crawl in its emergence. It's raining right now, and due to dip down to 36 at night in a few days.

My low was 38 last night, 36 two nights ago was the lowest of the year for me. The wimpy varieties (Cavendish and AA clones) have very yellow leaves, but they're not dead. My lowest temp so far this year was 34 last night. The plants are holding up well so far with just a little yellowing on older leaves. I have a bunch of DB that are turning yellow but it's difficult to harvest with a broken hand that's not in a cast or splint because I can't work with a cast. I'll have my wife help me this weekend. Tonight is supposed to warm up a little.

On a side note, The Urban Homestead in Pasadena lost their whole crop last night. Everything froze. Good thing I have this micro climate here in West LA.

80 F here today. Dry. We've had some brush fires already. It MAY rain today/tomorrow though.

My bananas seem to have made it through the one cold night(35F), and I see some new leaves pushing up through the center on a couple.

In area growing farms, they're harvesting cabbages by the truckload, and I saw a load of potatoes as well. Planting most of the fields but I haven't been able to tell what they're planting yet, but I'm certain some are more cabbages. They finally plowed under the old corn fields that were left too.

Three days ago we set an all-time (~150 years) high of 77F, which was a full 10 degrees warmer than the previous record high. The next night it snowed, and the low was all the way down to just 1F last night.

I have an unheated semi-pit greenhouse that I just built this fall. The lettuce/spinach/beets were fine, but the week-old tomato plants were wiped out. I planted a 4' Dwarf Orinoco in there last month to see how it would do, and its leaves fried when the outdoor night temps dropped into the teens. I cut the top off about a week ago and the p-stem was fine about 5" down from the top (I unfortunately screwed up and lopped off an additional 8" that I didn't need to). It had pushed a new leaf up a couple of inches going into last night, but rather than getting fully fried, it looks like only the top 1" of it has cold damage.

It has been rainy and wet in Florida, except at my house. It has rained at the farm, it has rained plenty at work, it poured 2" about 2 miles east of my house. I was watching the radar and it was raining in the lake and on the east side of town, but not at my house. Like seriously a 1/4 mile wide band in Pahokee right along the shore didn't get rain. It drives me crazy.

Ask that gator at the rear of your property if it's ok to pump out some of his canal water for irrigating. Ask real nice and in daylight only!

Locally the prediction is for a couple of days of clear skies with temperatures in the mid 80's F (30 C), so I plan to head for the beach!

Sat/Sun two days of rain all day and some at night. Not normal for my area. Weatherman said it was remnants of the Tropical storm.
Managed to get all the banana pups mailed yesterday to all members that asked for them. Still have too many. To auction at the club on Thurs.

So Rob... how's yer bananas doin'? :waving:

July 30, 2013 – HAWAII - A flood advisory remains in effect for Hawaii Island at least through 6:15 p.m. as the brunt of Tropical Storm Flossie moved past Hilo and East Hawaii and began pestering Kailua-Kona and West Hawaii with heavy rains and high winds. The lower Puna and Kau areas appeared to be the most badly hit portions of East Hawaii. The Hawaii Police Department reported fallen trees on Highway 132, the Pahoa-Kapoho Highway in the area of Lava Tree State Park. The highway was closed around noon but reopened about 2:30, Hawaii County Civil Defense officials said. More than 6,000 customers of the Hawaii Electrical Light Co., mostly from Volcano to Pahoa, lost power after high winds knocked down power lines in various areas of Puna, said Kristin Okinaka, HELCO deputy corporate communications officer. At the peak there were about 6,300 homes and businesses without power, according to Hawaii Electric Light Co. That included 2,800 customers from Volcano to Glenwood, 2,200 customers from Kalapana to Nanawale and 1,300 in Panaewa. Power was restored to some areas, and by mid-afternoon there were 5,000 customers without power, HELCO reported. Power has since been restored to about 500 customers, but HELCO crews are still working on the rest of the outages, Okinaka said about 3:45 p.m. Portions of Kona and Kohala began feeling the brunt of the storm about mid-afternoon. –Star Advertiser

All good here. We got wind and the power was out for 6 hours. But didn't get the 6-12" of rain. We got .39 inches that night, so still at 25% of normal rainfall this summer. Maui got the worst of it, mostly a 1-2" downpour and heavy thunder and lightning, which I got to experience after flying there in the storm. I had a Williams fall over and a Sucrier lean the other way. I had removed most of the Williams pups, so it became unstable. It opened up light to a large area and now my SH 3640 can take off.

Here in Vista and most of San Diego CA, the mid-day temperature was 90F (32C) with a wind blowing westerly off the desert out to sea. Tomorrow will be similar, and the rest of the week will be back to fall weather (70F). Of course there was a fire - typical for this season, that burned about 300 acres (121 hectacres).
