We did get some rainy days early but nothing lately.I think we are still above normal for the season ?
Oh, I was referring to the continued extreme low humidity. I'm having to give a foliar treatment once per week.

Its 45 degrees right now (1:30am), but it feels very cold with all of this rain! Going into the 50s tomorrow, then the weekend will be cold and next week will be around average temperatures again (in the 40s during the day and upper 20s and low 30s at night).
No snow yet this winter and none in the forecast! It would be great if this was a snowless winter, but Im sure we will get something before winter is over.

I don't know if there are records kept for such things. A member of another forum who lives about 35 miles away says he's had more sub-freezing days than has existed in the prior 50 years so I wouldn't be surprised if it's approaching some record. It's mostly a matter of the extreme drought we're experiencing and, thus, no cloud cover at night to trap heat. Hope that changes by the middle of this next week.
By the way, did you know that in the northern hemisphere that high pressure systems flow clockwise and low pressure systems flow counter-clockwise? It's something that was mentioned by a commercial airline pilot during my scouting High Adventure Training last weekend. Guess I never paid enough attention to the arrows on weather maps.

It's a tradition that goes back one or two years (originally started in the "Weather Forecast" thread).
When Soapy starts describing the horrors of 36F cold and the first (and usually the last) frost of the season, I gotta laugh... it's a parody to IMDb trailers. :08:
Interestingly, Trachycarpus palms from Ante (those that survived the past winter) are doing superbly well in this very mild central European winter of 2011/2012. Maybe they feel as if they were at home... with no frost and stuff. :lurk:

I don't think it's that cold, but it is cold! I put a second thermometer outside last night. My one I've been reporting so far this winter reports 26.1F and the other one is reporting 22.5. I think I'll get another one out there right now to check both of them but I'm guessing the lower one is more accurate based on the severity of prior frosts at fairly high temperatures in the past month or so.

It's dry and we seem to be in a weird pattern with surprise frosts several days after the cold front with enormous temperature gradients between the lake and outlying areas. I have a thermometer at my house and it is generally in agreement with the weather station at the school a block away and the bank 4 blocks away. The lowest temperature we have recorded was 40. And yet a mere 1/4 mile inland we have had frost twice. I actually had frost at my farm and I am only about 500' away from the lake. It's pretty unusual to have frost so close to the lake. All this after such unseasonably warm weather in December.

Today we had a slight breeze from the north to clear out the air. We had our first agricultural burn day for quite a while so I got busy warming things up, burning prunings, weeds along drainage ditches (nice and dry due to numerous frosts!), etc. Still have flames from my pile of prunings. Cold LA - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hw48lX1kmqY)
We're going to Nicaragua in March to visit one of our sponsored children for her quinceanera. I look forward to the warm weather.
When we first met her on a group Mission Awareness trip she and other sponsored children traveled with us a couple of days and we spent the nights in the town of Diriamba where there is a retreat house. It's at 500 meters above sea level and a bit cooler than the capital of Managua and especially cooler than areas like Leon or the town she's from, El Sauce (even though the elevation there is a little higher). I'd guess that El Sauce is about 10 degrees cooler than Diriamba. On the first evening at the retreat house our sponsored child was having a difficult time dealing with the cool weather in the evening. I'd guess it was about 74F with no wind and it felt very pleasant to us but she was "freezing". Linda got a sweater for her and we rubbed her hands which were, indeed, very cold. Later in the trip one of the social workers from Managua warned be about the hot climate in Chinandega which we were going to be visiting. It was pretty warm there, probably in the low 90s with moderate humidity. When I told the social worker that I thought it was hot but not "that" hot, he was quite amazed.
A friend of mine told me that people who live in tropical climates have a less active thyroid and are less able to cope with temperature changes. I'm not sure if this is accurate or not, but it might explain why these folks in LA are having such a hard time dealing with the bitter cold. ;)

Harvey, is it going to rain in time for your alfalfa seed?
I'm not very optimistic, but I might get surprised. I definitely have more weeds then seedling alfalfa at this point but there might be more plants there than I am recognizing. Besides the weather being dry, the cold weather has also been tough on the seedlings. I planted over $19,000 of alfalfa seed in November and might need to replant it all. I'm not sure if it's still the case but am hoping that Monsanto will waive the "technology fee" if I need to replant. That amounts to close to half the cost of the seed. We should be able to do a more accurate survey in 2-3 weeks if we actually get significant rain.

They've often been okay for me but I've not found any that have been particularly accurate (especially this winter). I just use them to compare to others and like to look at their rain totals as something to hope for. I also use Wunderground, Weather.com, and Intellicast just to compare to one another, especially when I'm trying to make a decision on when to cut hay early or late in the season when rain damage is a significant risk. About 15 years ago I had 5 out of 6 cuttings get rained on after it was cut. The stars were aligned that summer, I guess.

It's supposed to get down to my neck of the woods early tomorrow morning. And then it is supposed to be dry and nice for several days. Good think, I need to get my stone fruits sprayed and pruned before they put out flowers and I don't want to do that in the rain.

I would appreciate a little snow as it's snowed here twice in my lifetime but I've always missed it. Last year it snowed a little with Linda was home but when I got home 30 minutes later there was no trace of it.
Just a little, though.
One year one of my former employer's clients had greenhouses in Wasco that collapsed when they had 6" of snow. Wasco is sort of like here in that they "never" get snow.

Mild day with wind of 5-10 mph from the north which always dries things up but clears up the air. I can easily see the snow-covered peaks of the Sierra-Nevada 70-80 miles to the northeast of me.

No kidding. At least it is warmer and no rain today. Still pretty windy in some places, though.

It's downright warm. It was 81 today, it was 84 earlier this week and should be in the mid-80s tomorrow. It's almost hard to believe that it was 41 last weekend.

Amazingly beautiful sunny day with a very gentle ocean breeze. I'm not even using my shade cloth today, just working in the direct sun.

wow I dunno about some of you guys up here but this has been the weirdest winter I think In a decade. Prob the similar with some of the northern states. didn't get any snow till mid Dec, total of 7 inches all winter, rained a couple days in Dec and Jan. Been feeling like march for the last few days. 41 here today. Now they say snow again!

Had moderately heavy frost this morning, our 31st day of frost this season. I don't know what the low was but suspect it was above freezing. I moved my thermometer sensor into my greenhouse yesterday since I wanted to make sure it was staying warm enough after having moved a bunch of tomato transplants from my heated shop into 4" pots into the greenhouse. It got down 50F in the greenhouse and at 8:13am is 73F.

There's rain offshore about 100 miles which might come in here or pass us up for Baja California. In the latter case, the farms down there that supply Whole Foods, Fresh & Easy, etc. will be thrilled.
